1 Day in Naples, Italy | Travel Guide
This week we are taking you to an incredible, eclectic, tasty, unpredictable city : Naples.
Italy is world renowned for its food, but Naples is just… a State in the State when it comes to its culinary importance.
We’ve been exploring this city more by eating than by sightseeing. Both endeavours have been incredibly rewarding!
There are layers and layers of history and architectural heritage in Napoli : from medieval castles, to royal palaces, churches and even catacombs. Naples is an old lady, older in fact than Rome, since it was founded by the Greeks and later on conquered by Romans.
In this video we tried to convey all the enthusiasm and amazement this trip brought us. We also have made a list of our TOP recommendations in Naples : WHERE to eat, WHAt to eat, WHAT to see and visit. This is just our personal list so… do your research, but most importantly enjoy this city and don’t miss on the opportunity to just get lost in its narrow streets and let the magic happen.
Our TOP THINGS TO SEE IN NAPLES : Via Toledo and the Quartieri Spagnoli Galleria Umberto I Piazza del Plebiscito (Church of San Francesco di Paola and Royal Palace) Castel Nuovo Spaccanapoli and Via San Gregorio Armeno (the Christmas Alley) Castel dell’Ovo
Extra tip : get the best view of the whole city at the Certosa e Museo di San Martino, in the hilltop neighbourhood of Vomero. Vomero is one of the “fancy” areas of the city, completely different from the picturesque Quartieri Spagnoli.
WHERE TO STAY IN NAPLES : We stayed at a nice airbnb right next to the train station, close to Porta Nolana. It was very convenient for using public transportation and reaching Ercolano, Vesuvio and Pompeii. There was also a direct metro line to reach Vomero neighbourhood. But if you want to be closer to restaurants and landmarks, you should consider staying in the area between Quartieri Spagnoli, Santa Lucia and Centro Storico neighbourhoods.
WHERE TO EAT IN NAPLES : 1) Scaturchio for breakfast, and it did not disappoint. The babà here was amazing. Also the rustico was incredible. And everything else, really. 2) Pizzeria Brandi for lunch. PIZZA MARGHERITA WAS INVENTED HERE. The pizza was great, and the history-filled atmosphere made the whole experience unforgettable. 3) Any pizza fritta stand, especially on Via Tribunali road. We had ours at 'A Puteca d' 'a Pizza. 4) Antica Trattoria e Pizzeria da Carmine, right next to the train station.

10 Things to do in Naples, Italy Travel Guide Video Transcript: (NAPOLI)
Tell anyone you’re travelling to Naples and you’ll likely get a few raised eyebrows with some side comments about the mafia, or grid-lock traffic, or garbage on the streets. Somewhere along the way, Naples seems to have earned a bad reputation, but we thought it all sounded a bit too harsh. We wanted to experience the city for ourselves, plus we’d also heard there was good pizza!
We ended up having a grand ol’ time, so join on us as we show you what you can get up to with a couple of days in Naples, plus somewhere along the way, we’ll also reveal where we ate our favourite pizza.
Piazza del Plebiscito seemed like a good place to start our tour. This is a large public square in Central Naples, that earned its name from the 1860 vote that brought Naples into the unified Kingdom of Italy.
The plaza is surrounded by numerous attractions, including the Royal Palace of Naples on one side, and the Basilica of San Francesco di Paola.
We then visited the Royal Palace of Naples. This was one of the four residences in Naples used by the Bourbon Kings during their rule of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies.
The admission fee was 4 Euros and this gave us access to the Royal Apartments where we got to admire porcelains, tapestries, sculptures and painted ceilings found within the palace walls.
We visited was Castel Nuovo, an imposing medieval castle that dates back to 1282. This castle was built when Charles I of Naples took the throne and moved his capital from Palermo to Naples. Admission to the castle was 6 Euros per person.
We stopped by Caffe Gambrinus, a historic coffeehouse in the heart Naples for a bite and drink.
We visited Galleria Umberto I, which is a gallery which vaulted iron and glass ceilings, where you can shop & people watch.
This gallery dates back to the late 1880s and meant to be reminiscent of Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan.
While in Naples, we took it upon ourselves to find the best pizza in the city. This involved eating a total of 10 pizzas over two days. In the end we decided Da Michele was our personal favourite.
Because we always enjoy visiting outdoor markets wherever we go, we stopped by the Fish Market.
Moving on to museums we visited Naples National Archaeological Museum. This museum holds the Farnese Marbles, which is an impressive collection of Roman copies of classical Greek sculptures and ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum.
Another place we visited in Naples was the Quartieri Spagnoli, or Spanish Quarter. The streets in this quarter were laid down during the 16th century for the Spanish military barracks outside the city walls. The streets here are narrow and the buildings tall.
And that’s a wrap for our quick 2-day tour of Naples. We hope this video gave you a few ideas of things you can do in the city and all the pizza you can eat in between.
This is part of our Travel in Italy video series showcasing Italian food, Italian culture and Italian cuisine.

Naples, Italy is an amazing place to visit in Italy. If you want to know top 10 what to do in Naples or you need a travel guide, please keep watching.
Number 6. Capodimonte Museum & Park Capodimonte, a little further from the city center, is a beautiful park with excellent views of the city. The Capodimonte area covers about 134 hectares of land. In the past it was mainly used for hunting, but today Real Bosco di Capodimonte is used for escaping the city or a relaxing walks. The highlight is the surprising Museo di Capodimonte with important works of art by Italian painters (e.g. Michelangelo, Raphael and Titian), but also exhibitions of old weapons, beautiful rooms and changing exhibitions. Number 5. Piazza del Plebiscito & Palazzo Reale Piazza del Plebiscito is the largest square in Naples. The construction of the square was in the name of Joachim Murat, who was King of Naples from 1808 to 1815. Murat was the brother-in-law of Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte. Attractions on this semicircular square are the beautiful Palazzo Reale di Napoli, the Royal Palace, which is definitely worth a visit. On the other side of the square is the church San Francesco di Paolo, which was built after the example of the Pantheon in Rome. On the square you can see two statues: Statua di Carlo III di Borbone and Statua di Fernando I di Borbone. Undoubtedly the main square in Naples, the Piazza del Plebiscito features the Royal Palace and the Basilica Royal and is a truly fantastic place to visit. This vast open space is filled with important buildings and statues and aside from the aforementioned structures, it also contains the Palazzo Salerno, the Prefecture Palace and a statue dedicated to Charles III of Spain. The semi-circular colonnades of the Basilica Royal stretch out and frame the square beautifully. Number 4. San Domenico Maggiore Another of the beautifully decorated churches in Naples, the Sam Domenico Maggiore was founded by Dominican Friars and was constructed in 1324. The church is located in the centre of the old town of Naples near the university and the Dante Metro stop.
Full of renaissance artwork, sculptures and decoration, the church is hugely opulent – The panelled ceiling is gilded with gold and the high altar is also a stunning masterpiece. Furthermore, there is also a treasure chamber that contains a plethora of religious artefacts, clothing, accessories and other trinkets. Number 3. Castel dell'Ovo As you enter the port at Naples you will undoubtedly see this stunning sea bound castle. Once an island, the land that the castle stands on is now connected to the mainland and is accessible by a footpath and road. As the oldest remaining fortification in Naples, the Castel dell'Ovo was constructed in the early 6th century BC and some form of defensive structure has stood ever since. The castle is open to the public and it is a fantastic structure to explore – Walk through the passageways and arches and look out into the Mediterranean sea. You can also find several exhibits of art and displays about the history of the castle. Number 2. castel nuovo naples In the 13th century King Charles I of Anjou moved the capital from Palermo to Naples. With a change of the capital, of course, came a new castle. He ordered to build Castel Nuovo, which means 'new castle'. In the 15th century, the castle was extensively renovated to its present form after it was conquested by the king of Aragon. Today you will find in the west wing of the castle the 'Museo Civico'. This moderate and too pricey museum (6 euros) mainly consists of a few paintings of the castle, where it will also be noticeable that the sober castle has not been very well maintained. For an extra 10 euros you can also admire the 'Hall of the King', the prison and the view on top with a guided tour. If you want to visit the castle, you have to book online via this website. Actually it is enough to take a picture of the imposing exterior of the castle. Number 1. Naples Cathedral Dating as far back as the 13th century, the Cathedral of Duomo is a magnificent structure and stands as the main church in Naples and indeed in southern Italy. Located on the Via Duomo, the cathedral is accessible via the Museo metro stop but also has a regular bus service that passes the front façade. This religious building combines a myriad of styles including Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque – This is due to the restorations and changes that have been made since its creation. Outside, the front façade features a large central tower and many ornate sculptures and stone work Inside, the main knave is framed by a series of huge columns and the decoration is simply beautiful. Don't forget to visit the immaculately decorated chapel of San Gennaro that features a finely decorated altar and two vessels containing the saints blood.

And many more, like, busy shopping streets, Piazza Dante, oldest pizzeria, Gesù Nuovo and The Spire of the Immaculate Virgin, 4th century Greek walls, and the Vesuvius itself!
