======================================== FAQs ======================================== Q: How long did it take? A: My trip was 14 days.
Q: Which airport should I arrive at? A: Having travelled from the other side of the globe, I arrived at Taoyuan International Airport in Taipei. If travelling from Australia or Asia, there may be connecting flights to Kaohsiung International Airport on the south-west coast of Taiwan.
Q: How much did it cost? A: You can see a cost breakdown of my trip at 12:37
Q: How did you pay for things or get local currency? A: I just take money out from an ATM using my debit card. It has a small international transaction fee, but it’s minuscule if you only do it once or twice. You may be able to order foreign currency at better rates, but it’s not something I personally bothered with.
Q: Is it easy to find petrol stations? A: Yes, you'll find one pretty much everywhere, including remote areas in the mountains! I always went with caution and ensured I had a full tank before entering remote areas, however to my shock, there were petrol stations, and even 7 Eleven stores in remote mountains! Just to be safe, I would highly recommend getting a full tank of petrol before going to the mountains.
Q: Which month did you go? A: I visited mid November to early December and spent 14 days there.

Sun Moon Lake, Nantou, Taiwan🇹🇼 The Most Beautiful Lake and Mountain in Taiwan (4K HDR)
Sun Moon Lake (日月潭, Rìyuè tán) is located in Yuchi Township, Nantou County (南投縣, Nántóu Xiàn), Taiwan, and stands as the largest body of water in the country. This lake is not only a natural wonder but also a cultural and historical treasure, surrounded by the beauty of the mountains and home to the Thao tribe, one of Taiwan's aboriginal tribes. The name Sun Moon Lake comes from the unique geographical features of the lake, where the east side resembles a sun and the west side resembles a moon.
Situated at an elevation of 748 meters (2,454 feet) above sea level, Sun Moon Lake has a maximum depth of 27 meters (89 feet) and covers a surface area of approximately 7.93 km² (3.06 sq mi). The area around the lake is rich in trails suitable for hiking, offering breathtaking views and a serene atmosphere for visitors.
One of the lake's most notable events is the annual 3-km Swimming Carnival of Sun Moon Lake, which takes place around the Mid-Autumn Festival. This event attracts tens of thousands of participants from around the world and is listed among the Top 50 Open Water Swims in Asia and the Top 100 Open Water Swims of the World. Besides swimming, the lake area hosts various festivities including fireworks, laser shows, and concerts, making it a vibrant place for cultural exchange and celebration.
The lake and its surroundings have been designated as one of thirteen national scenic areas in Taiwan, highlighting its importance as a natural and cultural landmark. Among the notable sites around the lake are the Wen Wu Temple, built due to rising water levels from dam construction, and the Tzu-En Pagoda (慈恩塔, Cí'ēn Tǎ), constructed in memory of Chiang Kai-shek's mother in 1971. Other temples such as Jianjing Temple, Syuentzang Temple (玄奘寺, Xuánzàng Sì), and Syuanguang Temple (玄光寺, Xuánguāng Sì) also add to the spiritual and historical depth of the area.
The lake's history is rich, with its name in older English literature being Lake Candidius, after the 17th-century Dutch missionary Georgius Candidius. The central island of the lake, Lalu, is considered sacred by the Thao tribe and has undergone various name changes throughout history, reflecting Taiwan's complex cultural and political narratives.
Sun Moon Lake is not only a testament to Taiwan's natural beauty but also a symbol of its cultural richness and historical depth, making it a must-visit destination for travelers seeking to explore the heart of Taiwan.

Taiwan's largest lake, Sun Moon Lake is located in the mountains of Nantou at the geographic centre of Taiwan island.
The name of the lake is inspired by the beauty of the area. The east side of the lake is round, like the sun, while the west side is long and narrow, like a crescent moon.

Sun Moon Lake (Nantou, Taiwan)
The largest lake in Taiwan, Sun Moon Lake (日月潭) is situated at the foothills of Taiwan’s Central Mountain Range. The lake has such breathtaking views that it is designated as one of the “Eight Beautiful Scenic Attractions” in Taiwan.
It is possible to drive around the lake (~30km), though the more adventurous would usually prefer to explore the lake via cycling. Bicycle rental outlets can be found at many locations around the lake.
Popular sites at Sun Moon Lake includes: (00:00) - Shuishe Pier 水社碼頭 (00:38) The main town of Sun Moon Lake. Most of the lake cruises depart from this pier. During our visit, we went on a 40-minute cruise around the lake. The cruise is a 3-stop shuttle service going around the lake (and stopping at 3 different jetties).
- XiangShan Visitor Center 向山眺望平台 (01:40) The main visitor center for Sun Moon Lake with elevated views.
- WenWuTemple 文武廟 (02:03) A grand Chinese-palace style Taoist temple overlooking the lake.

3 Regrets From My First Trip To Taiwan
Here is everything I regret from my first trip to Taiwan and what I would have done differently next time. Sharing these tips with you so your next Taiwan trip will be an enjoyable one 💫
A few tips for your Taiwan trip: 1. Always buy a SIM card at the airport because it’s cheaper! It’s so convenient and they help you to change your SIM card and make sure that it works before you leave 2. Bring cash and do not completely depend on credit cards. Many smaller businesses and night markets accept cash only and you do not want to miss out on these local places! 3. Make sure to visit a themed 7-Eleven which can range from Snoopy, Hello Kitty, Lays Potato Chips, Open-Chan and so many more!
