Chinese Steam, Nanpiao 2
After a long wait on a cold hillside, the exhaust steam of an SY becomes visible through the morning mist. It soon becomes apparent that all is not as it should be. The increasing rumble confirms the initial suspicions. As the train passes, the offending diesel loco can be seen assisting at the rear. This indicated that the end of steam activity at this once excellent centre was shortly to take place. One less place to visit, but who would have thought that real steam would still be working at the end of the first decade of the 21st Century? Filmed December2009

Chinese Steam, Nanpiao 1
Viewed from beside a noisy road high on a hillside above the mine, an SY 2-8-2 pushes a rake of three spoil wagons towards the tip. Frequent blasts on the air horn and one with the steam whistle warns anybody near the track of its approach. December 2009

STEAMS FAREWELL SONG IN CHINA PART THREE, RESHUI
Although china rail by the start of 2003 had almost relegated the iron horse to the history books, there still remained many industrial operations that used steam locomotives, from the height of steam action in the late 1980's, when China rail boosted over 8,000 steam locomotives on its books, the decline of steam has been relentless. As we started the new millennium, official figures quoted 1,014 steam locomotives still active on China rail. Most of the fleet of QJ 2-10-2's are only 20-30 years old and still in very good working order, however due to the electrification and upgrading of many China rail lines many old diesels have been released, and shortly after this film was taken in February and March 2004, in late March diesel trials were carried out over the Jingpeng pass, reports in winter 2004-2005 suggest only 30% of trains were steam hauled, with at least one diesel piloting the steam locomotives, and many in pairs, and 10 more were expected in February 2005. Shortly after this diesel power took over on the Jingpeng pass. This programme includes levels 1,2 and 3 above Reshui. Running time: 60 Minutes Look out for the set of 4 DVDS in this spectacular winter steam series, available on E-Bay and shortly from

Yongchuan Coal Railway: Mine to Washery
This 762mm electric line is west of Chongqing. It operates in two sections with different wagons, cabooses and couplings. The first section is from the mine to the washery at Honglu. The railway had a set of 5 identical locos until one was replaced after a level crossing collision by a new loco of more modern design. Of all the Chinese narrow gauge lines I am aware of, this is the closest to a China Rail operation in miniature.
DF4D-4063 Dongdagu - Port of Tianjin passing DF8B-5214
Footage of Ligang Line on May 14, 2017, when DF8B-5214 was hauling empty coal railcars from port to Dongdagu, DF4D-4063 was later dispatched with higher priority. This section at that time didn't belong to electrification railway system so all locomotives were diesel-powered.
Both locomotives were hauling railcars owned by Shenhua Railway Company (a part of Shenhua Group which is a state energy company later merged into China Energy Investment Corporation).
DF8B-5214 was manufactured by CRRC Ziyang and now belongs to China Railway Beijing Group. DF4D-4063 was manufactured by CRRC Dalian and now belongs to Tianjin Nanhuan Railway Corporation.
China - JS workings at Sandaoling, December 2016 (3)
Before sunrise, in the winter months, the Class JS locomotives gather at Dongbolizhan to start the morning shift. We see some of the locomotives with their trains of side tipping wagons here, being prepared and watered. The trains leave one by one for the opencast coal mine. It's interesting to note that the built in guard's compartment on the last/first wagon has a train horn and a semaphore signal on the roof, so that the guard can tell the loco driver when to go and stop.
