This time, our hosts visited and toured art in Oita City, Yufu City, and Beppu City in Oita Prefecture.
In Oita City, they visited the Oita Prefectural Art Museum (OPAM).
Oita Prefectural Art Museum (OPAM) opened in 2015, and is based upon the concept of a “Museum of Encounters and of the 5 Senses.”
The building features an exterior designed to resemble Oita’s traditional bamboo crafting, with glass walls creating a feeling of abundant spaciousness, gaining attention as a “Veranda Open to the City.” The inside is centered around a collection displaying pieces from creators with connections to Oita, along with special independent exhibitions themed around various “encounters.”
From pieces by world-class artists to those made by local students, visitors can enjoy a wide range of exhibits throughout the year. Some can even be touched, allowing you to feel the art directly with your hands. We recommend checking the exhibition schedule in advance, and then making a plan to visit. There is also an attached museum shop and cafe, where visitors can share their thoughts on the artworks after viewing while shopping for souvenirs and enjoying a break with some tea, making for an entire day of fun.
Next, they visited the COMICO ART MUSEUM YUFUIN and accommodation facility COMICO ART HOUSE YUFUIN in Yufu City, Oita Prefecture. Yufuin has been a popular hot spring health resort, and is a one-of-a-kind region preserving its original village scenery while undertaking new endeavors.
At this facility, visitors can enjoy the village culture of Yufuin blending with contemporary art. After being wowed by the works of world-famous Japanese artists like Yayoi Kusama, Tatsuo Miyajima, and Takashi Murakami, our hosts then checked out the museum’s accompanying accommodation facility, which was designed upon the themes of earth and bamboo.
COMICO ART HOUSE YUFUIN, which was designed by renowned Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, features a minimalist space resonating with the works displayed at COMICO ART MUSEUM YUFUIN, while also naturally presenting the essence of the building materials. Alongside art, you can savor a special time amongst the lush nature and hot springs of Yufuin.
The final place our hosts visited was GALLERIA MIDOBARU, located in Beppu City. Here you can directly feel the textures, sensations, and seasons of Beppu City, which has long hosted many travelers and cultures as a hot spring town full of rising steam, as well as enjoy works by Japanese artists who have taken up Beppu as their subject matter. The attached stylish restaurant serves meals filled with local Oita vegetables, and you can dine without staying at the hotel, making it perfect for anniversaries and celebrations.
The inside bursts with the warmth of handmade textures, treating the five senses and helping one to heal. Moreover, there are hot springs with free-flowing water direct from the source of the famous Horita Hot Spring, one of the Beppu Hatto: a collective name for the eight hot spring villages scattered across Beppu. The guestrooms boast a semi-open-air hot spring bath perched upon a hill overlooking Beppu, and the sulfur spring waters are said to be effective for improving poor circulation and healing fatigue.

Our hosts rode the JR Kyushu 36+3 special express train!
Designed with the concept of “packing everything Kyushu into a single ride,” the 36+3 has five different routes for each day of the week running between Thursday and Monday. This time, our hosts rode the Sunday route, which departs from Oita Station in Oita Prefecture bound for Hakata Station in Fukuoka Prefecture.
Each of the train’s carriages boast “green” first-class seating imbued with a dignified classiness. There are “Green Carriages,” where you can take off your shoes and unwind on tatami-matted flooring, private “Green Rooms” to fully relax in comfort while on the move, and more.
The 4th “Lounge Car (Multi-purpose space)” carriage offers free space and hosts regular onboard events differing by season and route, along with other fun experiences showcasing the diverse charms of Kyushu. In this video, our hosts were able to try eating “konpeito” Japanese sugar candy.
At the 3rd carriage buffet, passengers can savor the rich cuisine culture of Kyushu with bento boxes made from local ingredients, desserts, and a drinks menu featuring sake and more flaunting regional tastes.
The train also treats passengers to 15-minute stops in Oita Prefecture at Kitsuki Station, a castle town dubbed “Kyushu’s Little Kyoto,” and Nakatsu Station, famous for its karaage deep fried chicken.
While only short, each stopover is sure to leave lasting memories as you shop for local specialities and feel the warmth of locals.
The train will also stop for around 60 minutes at Mojiko Station in Fukuoka Prefecture, giving one plenty of free time to explore and try the local food at this charming port town bristling with nostalgic Taisho Era flair.
The next stop is at Kokura Station, which functions as the gateway to Kyushu, and has bullet train lines connecting much of Japan. The final destination of Hakata Station also provides seamless access to Fukuoka Airport, which is considered one of the world’s most convenient airports for stress-free travel.

Nakatsu Keikoku gorge visit video
Nakatsu gorge is wonderful place to visit. The downstream river of this gorge Niyodo river is a famous river as one of best clarity water river in Japan selected by Japanese government. The stream water is very transparent and shows us very special green blue color. Also, we can see many unique shape huge rocks along with walking pass. We can enjoy walking through natural tunnels or over narrow bridges keep watching beautiful water flow. There is a beautiful fall as well.
