In this episode of Best of Naju, I explore the skate fish streets of Yeongsan-po, Naju, and learn some of the neighborhood's history.
Yeongsan-po (영산포) was one of three major ports of southwestern Korea in the 1910s, together with Mokpo and Gunsan because of the Yeongsan River (영산강).
Today this town is best known for fermented skate fish restaurants, the skate fish festival, yellow rapeseed flowers, local markets, and the Yeongsan River bike trails. It is located in Naju county, about 20 minutes from Bitgaram Naju Innocity and 40 minutes south of Gwangju city in Jeollanam-do province.

Gwangju is a city in the southwest corner of South Korea. It’s known for a pro-democracy uprising in 1980. The event is commemorated by the 5·18 Memorial Park, with tree-lined paths and dramatic bronze sculptures, and the 5·18 National Cemetery. East, the craggy Mudeungsan Mountain National Park has striking rock formations. In the foothills, the rebuilt 6th-century Jeungsimsa Temple has a Silla-era stone pagoda.

I consider Gwangju as my Korean hometown. It’s the first city where I spent most of the hot, humid summer of 2018 wandering and exploring when I first moved to South Korea.
Gwangju is the city where I bought my bicycle, my first hiking experience in Korea, where I partied with friends on the weekends, where I saw BTS, and it’s the first place where I started learning about Korea’s modern history.

Best of Naju: K-Drama Film Theme Park (나주여헹 영상테마파크)
In this episode of Best of Naju, I wander around this filming site and find the best Instagram-worthy spots.
Naju Image Theme Park (나주영상테마파크) is one of the largest K-drama film sets in Jeollanam-do province. But it isn’t as popular as other film sites in Korea. It’s located around 3 hours south of Seoul and 45 minutes south of Gwangju city. You could take the train to 나주역 then the 105 bus (as of 2020).

Seeing the Korean-Peninsula shaped-land in Naju, Jeollanam-do (나주 느러지 전망대 전라남도) | rural Korea travel
This land looks like the Korean Peninsula, do you see it?
It has been a very rainy season here in South Korea, but I still adventured out to see the Korean Peninsula (한반도지형) shaped land and purple hydrangea flower path in a rural part of Naju, Jeollanam-do.
It's located on the border of Naju, Muan, and Hampyeong along the Yeongsan River. You can take the bus, ride your bicycle here; I recommend taking a car or cycling here.
There are two other popular locations similar to this one: 1) Okcheon, outside of Daejeon (충청북도 옥천군 든주봉) 2) Yeongwol, Gangwon-do (강원도 영월 한반도지형)
