Latvia is beautiful, and it's time to get acquainted with our cities. Today, we are heading to the amazing city of Cēsis, one of the oldest and most picturesque cities in Latvia.
Cēsis Old Castle: The Cēsis Castle served as the residence of the Livonian Knights for a long time. Today, the castle is open for visits, and tourists can walk through its ancient corridors, climb the towers, and enjoy stunning views of the city and its surroundings.
Cēsis is one of the oldest cities in Latvia, a Hanseatic League city, and one of the residences of the Masters of the Livonian Order. The Gauja River flows past the town. Cēsis is the birthplace of the Latvian flag.
The origin of the city of Cēsis can be traced back 800 years. It is linked to the medieval Cēsis Castle, where the city began to form as early as the 13th century. Throughout the centuries, the castle shared the fate of Cēsis in battles with Russian, Polish, and Swedish armies. Rebuilt and expanded several times, the castle acquired its current architectural appearance in the early 16th century. Nowadays, it is the most impressive ensemble of castle ruins in the Baltic States, attracting visitors with the romantic appeal of medieval architecture.
Historical Heritage: Known in Livonian as Wenden, Cēsis is famous for its rich historical heritage. The city was founded in 1206 and is the third oldest city in Latvia after Riga and Koknese. Its historical center still retains a medieval atmosphere.
Old Town: In the Middle Ages, narrow winding streets with craftsmen's and merchants' houses closely clustered around the Cēsis Castle and church. Today, the old town showcases many historically and architecturally significant houses. On the ground floors of these and other buildings are small shops and various workshops full of creativity.
Modern Life: Despite its historical ambiance, Cēsis is a modern city with developed infrastructure and an active cultural life. Various festivals, concerts, and events take place here, attracting both locals and tourists from around the world. Since the late 19th century and to this day, Cēsis is known as a center of art, culture, and recreation.
Cēsis Festival: Every year, the famous Cēsis Festival is held, gathering thousands of tourists and locals. The festival includes various cultural events, concerts, exhibitions, and medieval reenactments. It's a great opportunity to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the past and enjoy the rich culture of the city.
Nature and Parks: Cēsis is surrounded by picturesque nature and beautiful parks. There are also over 10 bodies of water in Cēsis and a clean environment.
Cultural Attractions: Cēsis boasts numerous museums and art galleries. One of the most famous is the Cēsis Museum of History and Art, which holds unique exhibits telling the rich history of the city and the region.
Nationalities and Culture: The residents of Cēsis are people of various nationalities, making the city multinational and culturally diverse. The majority of the population is Latvian, but there are also Russians, Belarusians, Ukrainians, and representatives of other nationalities. The city's population is 16,372 people.

Latvia - Cēsis, medieval town
Cēsis was first mentioned in documents in 1206, and its castle dates from 1207. It was once a prosperous town of the Hanseatic League, as evidenced in its fine architecture, including the Church of St. John (1283). The old town is now preserved by government decree. After a long period of decline, Cēsis began to grow again in the last century after the construction of the Riga-Valka railway.

LATVIAN VILLAGE LIFE in CESIS LATVIA! 🇱🇻
I headed out beyond Latvia’s capital Riga to the beautiful town of Cēsis which started out as a tiny village in what is now Gauja National Park. My day trip took me to Cēsis Castle where I got a taste of traditional Latvian village life. 🇱🇹 🇱🇻 🇪🇪 See all of my videos from this trip here →
50 miles outside of Riga is the small town of Cēsis in central Latvia. It’s surrounded by forests, and once there I got the distinct feeling of travelling back in time. The bus between Riga and Cesis took about 90 minutes and cost less than €10 for a return ticket.
My day in Cēsis was a good one, and it was a joy to explore the real Latvia. Far away from the big cities, you often get to see the less touristy sites and less visited places. Here in Cesis, it felt like I was mingling with the locals rather than doing the tourist thing.
I started my day in Cēsis by visiting St John's Evangelical Lutheran Church (Cēsu Sv. Jāņa evaņģēliski luteriskā baznīca) right in the centre of town. I bought a pass to the old bell tower and climbed each one of those rickety old wooden steps to the top. Back down again, I walked through the old town to Maija Park where I spotted the famous black swans.
Next on my list was the mediaeval Cēsis Castle (Cēsu pils) which has been around for 800 years. There were lots of interesting learning opportunities inside the walls of the castle with historical interpreters explaining what life would’ve been like inside the castle and demonstrating plenty of tools and equipment people back then would’ve used for everyday life, as well as for defending the fortification.
Cesis Castle (Cēsu pils) contained a museum and plenty of the original design and architecture. Surrounding it is Cesis Castle Park, which I found to be the perfect place to enjoy a lazy afternoon following a busy day of exploring. The small lake, pretty bridges, fairytale steps and imposing Cēsis Enlightenment of Christ Orthodox Church (Cēsu Kristus Apskaidrošanas pareizticīgo baznīca) added to the beauty and splendour of the place.
Cēsis is an extraordinary little Latvian town, and one I’m very glad I decided to visit. Spend the day there if you can!

Historic window ales are used for projected illusion of castle’s surroundings and illustrates its development and wars.
This is a must see, as this will change our perception of history telling. This will be a new adventure and beautiful trademark for Cēsis, which allows us to find out more about the city in an interesting way. And this has to be seen by everyone, as this story is part of history of Latvia.” reveals the author of the exhibition’s idea Renārs Sproģis.
The project was inspired by the newest tendencies of museums and exhibitions worldwide. Nowadays, it has become more popular to implement various technology based solutions in this industry, which allows to keep up with the trends and ensure the best bond with visitors.
Main producer and video artist of the exhibition is Māris Kalve, who developed the exhibition together with his colleagues from “Kalvestudija”.
From May 16, the Cēsis Castle complex opens to visitors the first two floors of the museum's exposition, the Western Tower of the medieval castle, the multimedia exhibition Cēsis Castle Story, the medieval castle kitchen garden and the Exhibition House. Opening hours in May from Wednesday to Sunday 10:00 - 18:00, on Mondays and Tuesdays - closed. Tickets can be purchased at the visitor center without prior registration. Additional information
