Places to see in ( Mantova - Italy ) Palazzo Te
Places to see in ( Mantova - Italy ) Palazzo Te
Palazzo del Te or Palazzo Te is a palace in the suburbs of Mantua, Italy. It is a fine example of the mannerist style of architecture, and the acknowledged masterpiece of Giulio Romano. Although formed in Italian, the usual name in English of Palazzo del Te is not that now used by Italians. The official modern name, and by far the most common name in Italian, is Palazzo Te. The English name arises because Vasari calls it the Palazzo Del T, and English-speaking writers, especially art historians, still most often call it Palazzo Del Te.
Palazzo del Te was constructed 1524–34 for Federico II Gonzaga, Marquess of Mantua as a palace of leisure. The site chosen was that of the family's stables at Isola Del Te, on the edge of the marshes just outside Mantua's city walls. The name comes from tejeto, the grove that once grew on what was then an islet in the marshlands around the core of the city. Giulio Romano, a pupil of Raphael, was commissioned to design the building. The shell of the palazzo, erected within eighteen months, is basically a square house containing a cloistered courtyard. A formal garden complemented the house, enclosed by colonnaded outbuildings ending in a semicircular colonnade known as the 'Esedra'.
Like the Villa Farnesina in Rome, the suburban location allowed for a mixing of both palace and villa architecture. The four exterior façades have flat pilasters against rusticated walls, the fenestration indicating that the piano nobile is the ground floor, with a secondary floor above. The East façade differs from the other three by having Palladian motifs on its pilaster and an open loggia at its centre rather than an arch to the courtyard. The facades are not as symmetrical as they appear, and the spans between the columns are irregular. The centre of the North and South facades are pierced by two-storey arches without portico or pediment, simply a covered way leading to the interior courtyard. Few windows overlook the inner courtyard (cortile); the colonnaded walls are decorated on all sides by deep niches and blind windows, and the intervening surfaces are spattered by 'spezzato' (broken and blemished plaster) giving life and depth to the surfaces.
Once the shell of the building was completed, for ten years a team of plasterers, carvers and fresco painters laboured, until barely a surface in any of the loggias or salons remained undecorated. Under Giulio Romano's direction, local decorative painters such as Benedetto Pagni and Rinaldo Mantovano worked extensively on the frescos. These frescoes remain today and are the most remarkable feature of the Palazzo. The subjects range from Olympian banquets in the Sala di Psiche and stylised horses in the Sala dei Cavalli to the most unusual of all — giants and grotesques wreaking havoc, fury and ruin around the walls of the Sala dei Giganti.
These magnificent rooms, once furnished to complement the ducal court of the Gonzaga family, saw many of the most illustrious figures of their era entertained such as the Emperor Charles V, who, when visiting in 1530, elevated his host Federico II of Gonzaga from Marquess to Duke of Mantua. One of the most evocative parts of the lost era of the palazzo is the Casino della Grotta, a small suite of intimate rooms arranged around a grotto and loggetta (covered balcony) where courtiers once bathed in the small cascade that splashed over the pebbles and shells encrusted in the floor and walls.
In July 1630, during the War of the Mantuan Succession (1628–31), Mantua and the palace were sacked over three days by an Imperial army of 36,000 Landsknecht mercenaries. The remaining populace fell victim to one of the worst plagues in history that the invaders had brought with them. The Palazzo was looted from top to bottom and remained an empty shell: nymphs, god, goddesses and giants remain on the walls of the empty echoing rooms. Part of the Palazzo today houses the Museo Civico del Palazzo Te, endowed by the publisher Arnoldo Mondadori. It contains a collection of Mesopotamian art.

Mantua is a city surrounded by 3 artificial lakes in the northern Italian region of Lombardy. It's known for the architectural legacy of the Renaissance Gonzaga rulers, who built the Ducal Palace. This imposing building houses the Bridal Chamber, decorated with Andrea Mantegna frescoes. The Gonzagas also built the Te Palace, known for the Chamber of the Giants, where every surface is painted with mythological scenes.
Mantova - or Mantua in Emilian dialect - in Lombardy is famous for its artistic and cultural heritage and, under the rule of the Gonzaga family, had one of the most important courts of the Renaissance. In 2008 the city of Mantova became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In 2005 the Italian environmental organisation Legambiente named it Italy's most liveable city for quality of life. Surrounded by three artificial lakes created in the twelfth century, Mantova is a city still full of Renaissance splendour where visitors can also enjoy the tranquility of the lakes or a walk or cycle ride along the banks of the River Mincio.
The Gonzaga Renaissance Tapestries is at three locations: the Palazzo Te, the Museo Diocesano Francesco Gonzaga and the Museo di Palazzo Ducale and brings together 34 tapestries collected by the three sons of Francesco 11 Gonzaga [1466-1519] and Isabella D’Este [1474-1539]. During the time of Federico II Gonzaga, the first Duke, his brothers Ercole, a cardinal and Ferrante, an army commander and later Governor of Milan, the ownership of tapestries was becoming a symbol of wealth and power. The brothers collected hundreds of tapestries from Flanders or that were worked by Flemish weavers in Italy. Often the tapestries were copied from paintings of the time.
After the brothers’ deaths many of the tapestries were destroyed, dispersed or acquired by other noble Italian families and only 52 have come down to us today. Art historian Guy Demarcel has studied all these works and is the curator of the Mantua exhibition. Some of the tapestries are on loan from other European museums. 18 of the tapestries are on permanent exhibition at the Palazzo Te.
Visit the Cathedral, most of which was built between 1395 -1401 but the Baroque façade dates from the eighteenth century. Admire the Piazza Sordello while you’re there. Visit the Rotonda di San Lorenzo, the city’s oldest church, built in the late eleventh century. After all that culture, you’ll some sustenance, so why not head for one of the cafés in the Piazza delle Erbe and order luccio in salsa [pike in green sauce] or tortellini with zucca
Want to get away from it all? Take a boat tour on the Lago di Mezzo or the Lago Inferiore. In this photo: view of Mantova from the Lago di Mezzo - by Pietro Liberati. Or hire a bike and ride along the Mantova Lake Trail or, if you’re feeling adventurous, take the Mantova to Peschiera Bike Path.

Places to see in ( Mantova - Italy ) Castello San Giorgio
The castle of San Giorgio is one of the most representative monuments of the city of Mantua and is part of the Reggia dei Gonzaga. Built on the ruins of the church of Santa Maria di Capo di Bove from 1395 and completed in 1406 on commission of Francesco I Gonzaga and designed by Bartolino da Novara , the castle of San Giorgio is a square-shaped building consisting of four corner towers and surrounded by a moat with three doors and relative drawbridges , aimed at defending the city.
The architect Luca Fancelli , in 1459 on the recommendation of the Marquis Ludovico III Gonzaga , who freed the rooms of the Corte Vecchia for the Council promoted by Pius II , restructured the castle that definitively lost its primitive military and defensive function. For many years the manor house was the residence of Isabella d'Este , wife of Francesco II Gonzaga , one of the most famous noblewomen of the Renaissance . Isabella wanted at the court numerous artists and humanists of the time, such as Andrea Mantegna , Perugino , Leonardo da Vinci , Ludovico Ariosto andBaldassarre Castiglione , making Mantua one of the major European courts and artistic and literary center. In the prisons of the castle the condottiere Paolo Vitelli was closed again in 1496 , taken prisoner by Francesco II Gonzaga. The castle, along with other adjacent buildings, remains the prince's residence for about a century, until the time when Guglielmo Gonzaga will move his apartments into the restored Old Court.
In 1810 the Tyrolean patriot Andreas Hofer was imprisoned in the prisons of the manor before being executed. Starting from 1815 with the Austrian occupation of the city, the castle became the maximum security prison in which the opponents were closed. From 1852 in the castle were enclosed the Martyrs of Belfiore and some patriots attached to them ( Ciro Menotti , Teresa Arrivabene ). The earthquake of Emilia in 2012 caused structural damage to the building.
The rooms of the castle :
Sala dei Soli , located on the ground floor and embellished with frescoes of the fifteenth century , was transformed by Giulio Romano in 1531 and then by Giovan Battista Bertani
Sala degli Stemmi , which is accessed by a spiral staircase
Salone degli Affreschi , parallel to the Sala degli Stemmi
Sala delle Sigle , Isabella d'Este's wedding room
Saletta della Grotta , part of the Isabella d'Este apartment in the castle
Sala delle Armi , in which Giulio Romano painted 12 heraldic crests
Chapel of the castle , built by Bertani in 1563
Middle Room
Hall of the Frieze
Sala delle Cappe , with a barrel vault
Sala dello Zodiaco , with traces of paintings by Giulio Romano , where Pietro Frattini , one of the Martyrs of Belfiore and Ciro Menotti , was held prisoner
Camera degli Sposi .
The Camera Picta (Camera degli Sposi), a wonderful room on the main floor of the north-eastern tower of the castle of San Giorgio, is the work of Andrea Mantegna . The Mantegna has made it over a period of nine years, from 1465 (date engraved on the wall) to 1475 (date engraved on the commemorative plaque at the entrance of the hall), and readjusted the narrow space of the cubic room with vaults on lunettes in a succession of reality and fiction giving the environment an en plein air atmosphere (thus giving an idea of being in a false loggia). The space of each wall of the room was divided by the artist into three openingsthat transmit to the spectator, through wide arches, bucolic landscapes and curtains moved by the wind a strong antithesis with the reduced architectural environment. The frescoes have been made either dry (north wall, this technique allows a meticulous care of details) or fresh (south wall, the fresco obliges the painter to opt for a more synthetic taste). There are two painted scenes depicting members of the Gonzaga family , the Scene of the Encounter and the Scene of the Court . With them Mantegna pays tribute to the patrons that so many clients have procured for him. In the room, you can not stand more than 5-10 minutes because (using the technique of dry painting) the humidity and the exhaled air
