The island of Barthelasse , is the biggest river island of Europe. Located between Avignon (from which it is separated by the Bras Mort du Rhône) and Villeneuve-lès-Avignon (from which it is separated by the Grand Rhône), it is one of the 9 districts of the city of Avignon : the Barthelasse-Piot district. It is partly integrated into the municipal area of Avignon and the canton of Avignon-Ouest since its transfer in the 1850s by the municipality of Villeneuve-lès-Avignon. Born from the gradual welding of a string of Rhone islands, including the island Piot, which forms its southern tip and has retained its name, the island of Barthelasse has a surface of about 700 hectares, including 400 cultivable, making it one of the largest river islands in Europe and the largest river island in France.
Situated between Avignon and Villeneuve-les-Avignon, between the two branches of the Rhône - the Grand Rhône on the Villeneuve side, the petit Rhône on the Avignon side – it covers 700 hectares of peaceful greenery just a few minutes on foot from the historic centre.
Only a thousand people live on the island, which has been protected from urban development because it is flood-prone. Much of it is farmland. Many areas are also devoted to leisure and relaxation, including a skatepark, a soccer field, swimming pools, a lake, a children's recreation centre and a youth hostel.
The peaceful and pleasant towpath offers an exceptional, unobstructed view over the Avignon bridge, the Rocher des Doms and the Popes' Palace and it is ideal for a stroll, jogging or just lounging on the grass.

The Pont Saint-Bénézet, also known as the Pont d'Avignon, is a famous medieval bridge in the town of Avignon, in southern France. A bridge spanning the Rhône between Villeneuve-lès-Avignon and Avignon was built between 1177 and 1185. This early bridge was destroyed forty years later during the Albigensian Crusade when Louis VIII of France laid siege to Avignon.
The bridge was rebuilt with 22 stone arches. It was very costly to maintain as the arches tended to collapse when the Rhône flooded. Eventually in the middle of the 17th century the bridge was abandoned. The four surviving arches on the bank of the Rhône are believed to have been built in around 1345 by Pope Clement VI during the Avignon Papacy. The Chapel of Saint Nicholas sits on the second pier of the bridge. It was constructed in the second half of 12th century but has since been substantially altered.
The western terminal, the Tour Philippe-le-Bel, is also preserved. The bridge was the inspiration for the song Sur le pont d'Avignon and is considered a landmark of the city. In 1995, the surviving arches of the bridge, together with the Palais des Papes and Cathédrale Notre-Dame des Doms were classified as a World Heritage Site.
The Saint Bénezet bridge, a major witness of the history of Avignon, is known throughout the world thanks to the famous song. Built from the 12th century, it was washed away several times by the floods of the Rhone, and finally abandoned in the seventeenth century. Classified World Heritage by UNESCO. According to the legend, the bridge was built in the 12th century by a young shepherd from Ardèche - Bénezet - who heard voices telling him to build a bridge in Avignon. The bridge was completed in 1185, creating the only place to cross the Rhône between Lyon and the Mediterranean sea. The bridge originally spanned approximately 900 meters and had 22 arches. It was dismantled in 1226, then rebuilt. It was later washed away several times by flood waters and rebuilt until it was abandoned in the 17th century. Today, all that remains are four arches and a chapel dedicated to Saint Nicolas. The bridge is famous the world over due to the lovely children's song Sur le pont d’Avignon.
The Pont d’Avignon was a true feat of engineering, and was continually being worked on and repaired. A source of legends, an emblematic monument of the area, the bridge has been the subject of unprecedented interdisciplinary research since 2010. Under the aegis of the greater Avignon area and the CNRS, a wide community of researchers has been conducting work. Their results have led to new museum areas and displays, and a multimedia approach which re-creates the bridge in 3D in the many settings that changed over the centuries.
