Top 10 Tourist Destinations in Bulgaria

Bulgaria is jam packed with fantastic attractions to visit. From its dense forested mountain ranges to the sandy beaches of the Black Sea, there’s a wealth of wonderful Bulgarian visitor attractions to explore. But with so much on offer it can be hard to know exactly where to begin, which is why we thought we’d lend a helping hand with our shiny list of the Top 10 tourist attractions in Bulgaria.

1. Rila Monastery
With its stunning location in the forested valley of the Rila Mountrains, the Rila Monastery - Bulgaria’s largest and most famous monastery – ranks among the most famous Bulgarian tourist attractions. On top of its epic size and surrounds, the Monastery models a colourful, almost kitsch exterior alongside vibrant wall paintings in its striking interior.

2. Belogradchik Fortress
Situated amid a cluster of strange shaped rocks, and almost blending in with them, the Belogradchik Fortress is one of Bulgaria’s top visitor attractions and among the most famous. Originally built by the Romans, it was later expanded by the Byzantines, Bulgarians and Turks. The natural landscape, combined with the buildings themselves, make Belogradchik an atmospheric, almost haunting site to visit.

3. Boyana Church
One of Bulgaria’s most fascinating places and UNESCO-listed, Boyana Church definitely highlights that it’s what’s inside that counts. A relatively dark, lacklustre church hides some of the most spectacular medieval frescoes in the whole of Europe. They’re an historical treasure and a brilliant example of the art of the period. This obscure gem is nonetheless one of the most remarkable tourist attractions in Bulgaria and definitely worth making the effort to see.

4. Baba Vida Fortress
An imposing fortification, the Baba Vida Fortress is probably the best-preserved Medieval castle in Bulgaria. It only needs some real-life knights and our medieval fantasy would be complete. It was first built in the 10th century and has withstood a variety of attacks and sieges over its lifetime. Other epic episodes to think about while walking through the rooms and towers of Baba Vilda are its capture by the Hungarians and the Ottomans.

5. Rozhen Monastery
With stunning views that will live long in the memory, the medieval Rozhen Monastery - whose history stretches all the way back to the 9th century AD - is arguably one of Bulgaria’s best tourist attractions. Perched atop a lofty mountain, with panoramic views across the region, the medieval monastery is known for its beautiful wood carvings, stained glass windows and elaborate murals, some of which have survived from the 15th century.

6. Tomb of Kazanlack
Visit this ancient burial site to behold Bulgaria's best-preserved artistic masterpieces from the Hellenistic period (from the 4th century BC to be precise). The murals are remarkable, with their splendid portrayal of horses and couples embracing. The tomb of Kazanlack is definitely the best known of the burial sites from this period, but there are a number of other tombs in the area which are worth exploring.

7. Pliska
Once you’ve explored Bulgaria’s current capital, Sofia, why not venture to the country’s original, medieval capital Pliska? This archaeological site, with its complex system of fortifications, was the main city of the First Bulgarian Empire from 681AD until 893AD. A particular highlight is the church known as the Big Basilica. Pliska might not be large by modern city standards, but the ruins still spread over 23 square kilometres, so be sure to pack comfy shoes.

8. Perperikon
Not necessarily what you think of when you consider the visitor attractions on offer in Bulgaria, but the country actually boasts a wealth of ancient remains. Prime among these, the ruins of Perperikon are worth visiting as much for what they represent as what they still show today. Inhabited since 5000BC, Perperikon housed the Temple of Dionysus, legendary for being the place of great prophecies.

9. Tsarevets Castle
Tsarevets Castle is one of Bulgaria’s most interesting tourist destinations. Located in the city of Veliko Tarnovo, this medieval fortress was the centre of the Second Bulgarian Empire from the 12th century AD. It was then captured by the Ottoman Empire in the 14th century, though it continued to flex its muscles for centuries to come.

10. Djumaya Mosque
A slightly more unusual one on our list of the top ten tourist attractions of Bulgaria, the Djumaya Mosque nevertheless very much deserves its place. It’s one of the oldest mosques in Europe and dates back to around the 14th century, with a design considered typical of mosques from the era. Services are still held at Djumaya, so be sure to check in advance to find a good time to visit as you will definitely want to see the floral motifs and medallions bearing Koranic texts that decorate its inside.

Bulgaria, a country of compelling contrasts, has numerous destinations that dazzle tourists with their beauty and rich history. Nestled in the northern part of this enchanting country is Vratsa, a city that effortlessly weaves the tales of ancient civilisations with the splendour of Mother Nature. If you're a travel enthusiast on the hunt for your next unique destination, Vratsa promises a journey that's as enriching as it is visually arresting.

Historical Grandeur of Vratsa

Begin your exploration in Vratsa's heart, where remnants of its illustrious past are beautifully preserved. The Vratsa Historical Museum is a treasure trove of artefacts that trace back to the prehistoric, Thracian, and Roman periods. Notably, the Rogozen Treasure, the largest Thracian treasure ever discovered, is showcased here, with its intricate silver vessels bearing witness to the skilled craftsmanship of ancient Bulgaria.

Ledenika Cave: Nature's Marvel

Just outside Vratsa lies one of Bulgaria's natural wonders, the Ledenika Cave. As you traverse its ten chambers, you'll be mesmerized by the stunning stalactites and stalagmites formations. The Concert Hall, due to its perfect acoustics, and the White Chamber, named for its ethereal white crystal formations, are especially captivating. During winters, the cave transforms into a wonderland, with ice formations adding to its allure.

Vrachanski Balkan Nature Park: An Adventurer's Paradise

For those who believe the best way to experience a place is by immersing in its natural landscapes, the Vrachanski Balkan Nature Park offers a perfect setting. This protected area, characterized by its sprawling meadows, dense forests, and imposing rock formations, is a haven for biodiversity. Hiking trails wind through the park, each leading to panoramic views, with the Skaklya Waterfall being a noteworthy highlight. At a staggering height of 141 meters, it's one of Bulgaria's tallest falls and offers a sight that's truly postcard-worthy.

Rock Climbing: Scale the Heights of Vratsa

Vratsa's impressive limestone cliffs, especially the Vratsata Gorge, have made it a hotspot for rock climbing enthusiasts. Whether you're a seasoned climber or a newbie looking to learn, Vratsa provides both challenge and guidance, with local instructors ensuring a safe and thrilling experience.

Bulgarian Craftsmanship at Its Best

While Vratsa's landscapes will captivate your heart, its artisanal traditions will pique your curiosity. The region is renowned for its crafts, particularly textiles. Don't miss out on the opportunity to acquire handwoven carpets or intricately embroidered fabrics, each piece echoing the soul of Bulgarian culture.

Gastronomic Delights in Vratsa

No trip is complete without indulging in local cuisine, and Vratsa, with its traditional Bulgarian eateries, promises a culinary journey like no other. Relish dishes like kavarma (a meat stew) or banitsa (a cheese-filled pastry), and wash it down with rakia, the famous Bulgarian spirit. The fresh produce from the Vratsa region, combined with age-old recipes, ensures every meal is a feast for the senses.

Annual Celebrations: Experience Vratsa's Vibrancy

Vratsa's calendar is dotted with festivals and events that showcase its rich culture. The Ledenika Carnival, held in February, sees locals and tourists alike celebrating the beauty of the Ledenika Cave with music, dance, and merriment. Similarly, the Vratsa Mountain Rally, an annual car racing event, brings adrenaline junkies from all corners, turning Vratsa into a hub of excitement.

City of Melnik Part 2 | Melnik | Bulgaria | Things To Do In Melnik | Visit Bulgaria

Check out our travel blogs and travel website for more content on the best places to visit around the world.

Sofia is the best starting point if you are taking public transportation, as there is one direct bus that departs daily. This trip takes around 4 hours, but the return to Sofia is the next morning, so be sure to arrange overnight accommodation in Melnik.

Melnik has developed a celebrated winemaking tradition. Sir Winston Churchill used to order 500 litres of Bulgaria's Melnik wine every year. The town is an architectural park and all newly built houses must comply with the Bulgarian revival architecture. The most visited house is the Kordopulov House, a private museum. Beneath it the ruins of the family church St. Barbara are also a point of interest.

One of the most striking features of Melnik is its landscape. The town is surrounded by the unique Melnik Earth Pyramids, a series of natural sandstone formations that create an otherworldly backdrop for the town's traditional architecture. These dramatic pyramids have been sculpted by centuries of wind and rain, resulting in towering cliffs and fascinating shapes that draw visitors from all over the world.

Melnik's history dates back to antiquity, with evidence of Thracian, Roman, and Byzantine settlements in the region. During the medieval period, the town flourished as a significant trading and cultural centre under Bulgarian and Byzantine rule. Melnik's strategic position, along with its wine production, contributed to its prosperity during this time.

The town's architecture is characterised by the Bulgarian National Revival style, with beautifully preserved houses featuring ornate woodcarvings, stone masonry, and colourful frescoes. A prime example of this architectural style is the Kordopulov House.

Melnik's wine culture is another major draw for visitors. Today, Melnik's wineries and vineyards continue the tradition of producing high-quality, unique wines that have gained international acclaim. Travellers can visit these wineries for wine tastings and learn more about the town's wine heritage.

Another notable attraction near Melnik is the Rozhen Monastery, one of the best-preserved medieval monasteries in Bulgaria. Founded in the 13th century, the monastery features impressive frescoes, ornate wood carvings, and a peaceful atmosphere that attracts pilgrims and tourists alike.

Melnik is a captivating destination that offers a perfect blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. The town's stunning landscapes, rich wine culture, and well-preserved architecture make it an unforgettable experience for anyone seeking to explore the hidden treasures of Bulgaria.

Boyana (Bulgaria) Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Boyana in Bulgaria.

In a suburb of Sofia, capital of Bulgaria, and located on the slopes of the Vitoscha Mountains, is the country’s most worshipped-in historic building, Boyana Church. It actually comprises three churches that over the centuries have grown into a single entity. The first building covers an area of six square metres and after two centuries, a further two storey high church was added. The adjoining third church followed in the nineteenth century and is a unique combination of various architectural epochs. The view of the western wall and circular ceiling of the Narthex, is quite breathtaking as they are completely covered with art. Restoration work has taken place for several years and since 2002 Boyana Church has been open to the public.
