Today I will travel back in time to show you amazing wonder of Portugal - Monsanto. This is The most Portuguese village of Portugal and I can see why...can you?
Village is 250km or about 155 miles from Lisbon, so pack your things and get yourself here. You will not be dissapointed, I promise you that.
Monsanto is located in Idanha-a-Nova municipality in Castelo Branco district. Population of Monsanto - about 800 inhabitants.

Life in Portugal is good and we love our new city of Covilhã in the mountains. In this episode we have a visit to the beautiful hillside village of Monsanto (where parts of House of the Dragon was filmed. We also have a great time during the 25 de Abril celebrations -- with fireworks, music and more to celebrate the 1974 Carnation Revolution. Plus, we do some errands and give a few tips for new foreigners doing exciting things like...grocery shopping!

Monsanto Castle:
This place registers the human presence from the Paleolithic, with archaeological vestiges of a Lusitanian castro and of the Roman occupation in the denominated field of S. Lourenço, in the foothills of the mount. Vestiges of the Visigothic and Arab permanence were also found.
The imposing castle built by the Templars was partially destroyed in the 19th century by the accidental explosion of the ammunition bunker.
We invite you to visit the remains of the powerful Castle on the steep hillside where you can see the fortress, the waist of walls and watchtowers, as well as the beautiful ruins of the S. Miguel Chapel. XII, and the Chapel of Santa Maria do Castelo.

Monsanto is a picturesque village, situated far to the East (of Central Portugal), on the north slope of a single solitary peak. In 1938, it was named the most quintessentially Portuguese village in Portugal, a title it still lives up to. At the summit of this truly lonely mountain, we find Monsanto Castle, an impressive medieval fortification, which of old secured our borders and kept watch over the lands of the surrounding Beira Baixa. The Castle was part of a set of Portuguese strongholds of the Knights Templar and had its apogee in the 1300s, during the times of the Order of Christ, a military-religious order that blended the powers of the Church and the Portuguese Crown. Perhaps more interesting for today's castle fans, Monsanto castle was recently used as a filming set for HBO's upcoming Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon which takes place 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, and focuses on the Targaryen civil war. I don't know what location HBO used Monsanto Castle for, but I'm hoping it's Highgarden or some other beautiful place, and not Harrenhal. What do you think? EDIT: The location was, indeed, Dragonstone. The giant boulders of Monsanto were unmistakable! :D

Monsanto | Portugal
Monsanto was voted the most “Portuguese town in Portugal”. The village hangs off a mountaintop overlooking the Portuguese countryside. The most typical aspect of Monsanto is the fact that the village developed around impressively big and miraculously balanced granitic boulders. The tiny streets, just wide enough for a donkey, are carved out of rock and climb up a very steep hill. The hill, known as the Mons Sanctus, rises to a height of nearly eight hundred meters. When you are walking in these streets it seems that you are travelling back in time. We really enjoyed this unique village!
