FEZ, MOROCCO (2023) | 7 BEST Things To Do In & Around Fez

Fez is located in northern Morocco and is commonly referred to as the country’s cultural capital. Dating back to the 9th century, Fez is known for its ancient, chaotic medina filled with madrasas, palaces, residences, mosques, and fountains from this period. It’s also home to the first university in the world according to the Guinness World Records.

😴 WHERE WE STAYED (highly recommend!) - Palais Fes Yahya:

7. Explore the medina Fes el Bali
Fes el Bali is the oldest walled part of Fez. It consists of more than 9,000 narrow alleyways, so it’s a true maze. That’s why we recommend going on a guided tour here on your first day. Not only will you see the important historical sights and souks, but you’ll also feel more at ease wandering these tight alleys.

☑️ Guided tour of Fes el Bali:

6. Get a view over the medina
The old city of Fes is surrounded by hills that offer panoramic views. The Marinid Tombs are located on the hill that lies to the north of the city. These monumental tombs were originally a royal necropolis for the Marinid dynasty which ruled in the 13th to 15th centuries. And although the tombs are in a heavily ruined state today, it’s still fun to walk around here and take in the views of the entire walled medina area from above.

5. Stroll around the Jnan Sbil Gardens
If you need to escape the hustle and bustle of the medina, then head to the only public garden in the area. This peaceful slice of nature is home to various birds, plants, flowers, and palm tree-lined walkways. Stroll around the gardens to recharge your batteries.

4. Admire the Bou Inania Madrasa
Located in the medina, this ‘madrasa’, or Islamic school of learning, is one of the few religious buildings in the city that non-Muslims are allowed to enter. It was constructed in the 14th century and up until the 1960s, this was an actual functioning theological school. Today, you can admire the beautiful carved woodwork, marble courtyard, mosaic tilework and decorations.

3. Take in the Smells of the Tanneries
The tanneries of Fez are one of the city’s most famous attractions. Located in the old town, the tanneries have been the bustling center of the city's leather industry since the medieval era. The only way to get the iconic bird’s-eye views over the dying pits is to visit the leather stores surrounding the tannery area.

2. Go on a day trip to Volubilis & Meknes
One of the things we liked about Fez was its proximity to other interesting destinations. The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Volubilis is situated a one and a half hour drive from Fez. Home to the best-preserved Roman ruins in all of Morocco, this site was one of the most remote outposts of the Roman Empire.

☑️ Day tour to Volubilis & Meknes from Fez:

1. Go on a day trip to Chefchaouen
Another great day trip from Fez goes to Chefchaouen, which is a 3.5 hour drive away. It’s known as the Blue City thanks to its picturesque streets filled with houses painted in different shades of blue. The best way to explore these alleyways is to simply get lost and take photos.

☑️ Chefchaouen day tour from Fez:

FEZ to MIDELT MOROCCO: Crossing the Middle Atlas Mountains & Canyon Walk

In episode 6 of our Morocco vlog we travel across the Middle Atlas Mountains from Maroc Fez to Berber Midelt via Ifrane. See rare Barbary Macaque Monkeys in high Cedar Forests & hike Berrem Gorge, a Hidden Gem only a Morocco Travel Guide would know about.

In this Morocco Travel Vlog we journey through the Middle Atlas Mountains to the apple capital of Morocco, Midelt.

The cool mountain air and stunning nature in the Middle Atlas made for a refreshing change from the bustling cities of Fez, Chefchaouen and Casablanca. We were surrounded by wildlife, including some unexpected surprises — don’t miss it!

As we travelled south to Midelt, the landscape changed dramatically, from the European-influence of northern Morocco, to the nomadic Berber, or Amazigh, south. Located on a high barren plateau (over 1,500 meters) between the Middle and High Atlas Mountains, Midelt is the perfect base for exploring both mountain ranges.

And then came the highlight of the trip — the hidden canyon of Berrem Gorge! We had no idea it even existed until it was almost upon us. What an incredible surprise!

Highlights:
- Scenic road trip from Fez to Midelt
- Seeing wild Barbary Macaque Monkeys and other Unexpected wildlife
- Discovering Berrem Gorge, a hidden gem in Morocco

If you're planning a Morocco road trip or looking for unique places to visit, this episode is a must-watch!

Tour Morocco in 2 Weeks with Intrepid Travel

On this two-week journey with Intrepid Travel through Morocco’s landscapes and cityscapes, you’ll explore the country’s best attractions. Enveloped in the country’s warm hospitality, experience cosmopolitan and cultural hubs, desert sands, medieval towns, ancient Roman ruins, historical monuments, mountain ranges, and insane views of the ocean.

Morocco borders the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. This fascinating country is immersed in Berber, Arabian and European traditions, and where the fusion of old and new speaks through architecture and artwork. Morocco is also an incredibly diverse country. On the one hand, you have buzzing cities and on the other are the daily rituals of nomadic tribes.

As dusk falls on your first evening in this North African gem, start in the famous city of Casablanca before going on to towns like Rabat and Fes, wandering along desert sands in the Sahara and Djemaa El Fna in Marrakech, and even visit the epic snow-capped peaks of the Atlas Mountains.

As well as heading to coveted destinations in Morocco, this two-week trip also includes remote must-see spots. There’s the sleepy town of Midelt where you can watch local farmers go about their day and spend the night listening to local musicians perform traditional folksy jams. You’ll also ramble along the limestone river canyons of Todgha Gorge in the eastern part of the High Atlas Mountains, sleep under the stars in the mountain village of Aroumd and visit Ait Benhaddou, a famous ksar in the Ounila Valley and UNESCO World Heritage site.

This two-week journey ends with a bang in the metropolis of Marrakesh, a happening modern city with all the splendour of the past. Marrakesh’s heady concoction of intricate lanes, souks, opulent architecture, and fragrant cuisine is the perfect finale to the best of Morocco.
