Rümmecketal nature reserve
The Rümmecketal nature reserve with an area of 18.37 hectares is located west of Freienohl in the urban area of Meschede. It was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) in 2020 by the district council of the Hochsauerland district with the Meschede landscape plan. From 1994 to 2020, today's NSG area belonged to the Meschede landscape protection area. area description
The NSG is the largely natural Rümmecke in the urban area of Meschede and areas of the floodplain. The floodplain is mainly stocked with spruce. In the eastern part of the NSG, the formerly grassland valley floor was reforested with locally appropriate hardwood as part of compensation measures for the construction of the A 46. At the level of the north-west tip of the Olperhöhe - Winterseite nature reserve, which is immediately adjacent to the south, a species-rich, apparently fallow wet pasture interrupts the wooded valley floor. Otherwise, the course of the Rümmecke with its stream-accompanying springs, wet fringes and alder forest relics forms a network system of legally protected biotopes according to § 30 BNatSchG, which also includes the many Siepen flowing in on both sides, which interlock the main valley with the large adjacent forest areas. An artificially dammed fire-extinguishing pond interrupts the continuous floodplain a good 600 m below the city limits; beyond that, only minor interventions in the valley structure are recognizable. A fountain gallery for drinking water and former small fish ponds are in the floodplain.
The landscape plan lists the protective purpose of the NSG: “Protection of the near-natural running water system and its special wet forest locations, which are often rich in peat moss; Preservation and restoration of forest communities worthy of protection along an outstanding valley course that structures and shapes the surrounding forest landscape in addition to the corresponding NSG determination in the Sundern LP in the sense of a biotope network; Safeguarding of habitats that are particularly worthy of protection according to § 30 BNatSchG and of species-rich, partly rare plant occurrences.

A drive through the town of Meschede to Abtei Königsmünster Meschede is a town in the Hochsauerland district, in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is the capital of the district Hochsauerlandkreis. One of the five branches of South Westphalia University of Applied Sciences (also: Fachhochschule Südwestfalen (FH SWF)) is located here. ........... Königsmünster Abbey in Meschede (North Rhine-Westphalia) is a monastery of the Benedictine Congregation of St. Ottilien. In addition to the mission and pastoral care, the brothers run a number of artisanal or agricultural businesses and a high school. The abbey was founded in 1928 by monks from three Bavarian monasteries. The contract of March 2, 1928 between the city of Meschede and the Benedictine congregation of St. Ottilien (Mission Benedictines) stipulated that the monks take over the city rectorate school and in return receive material support from the city for the construction of the monastery. The congregation announced a competition for an overall development plan for the monastery, which the architect Franz Schneider won in 1930. Schneider also prevailed in the tender, so that he took over the execution of the entire system, which was developed symmetrically around a church facade. In 1932 the monastery became an independent priory with Father Linus Leberle (1880–1956) as the first prior. Between 1937 and 1956 Alban Buckel from Münsterschwarzach was prior. The monastery was abolished by the National Socialist regime from 1941 to 1945. The 56-year-old brother Virgil Wilhelm returned to Meschede in April 1945 as the first monk. In June he wanted to go to Kallenhardt on a borrowed bicycle, but he never got there. His remains were finally found a year later and identified from his cloister key and the remains of his laundry. He was tortured and murdered on June 8, 1945 at the voice trunk near Meschede by unknown persons, possibly by marauding foreign workers, as it was then known, who were probably after the bicycle. (Marauding foreign workers was a common term used at the time by former National Socialists for the more than 1000 forced laborers who were deported to Meschede for slave labor and held in three camps within the city limits and were liberated by the American army on April 8, 1945.) After Virgil Wilhelm Initially buried in the southern cemetery in Meschede, the reburial took place in 1964 in the monastery cemetery of the Königsmünster Abbey. The Meschede-Nord rifle club erected a memorial stone in the form of a reconciliation cross. On October 18, 1956, the monastery was elevated to the canonical status of an abbey and Father Harduin Bießle was elected the first abbot. The abbey church was built by the architect Hans Schilling during his tenure. When building the church, the formal language and symbolism for people of the 20th century were deliberately chosen. The church was consecrated on September 1, 1964, i.e. on the 25th anniversary of the German invasion of Poland, as a peace church in a world that cannot come to peace (annual report from 1958). During the tenure of the second abbot, Stephan Schröer (1976-2001), numerous young men joined the community, so that the convent grew to over 80 members in the meantime. This was probably due to the fact that the abbey had become very well known in the region through its work in the school and that young people in particular were attracted by increased involvement in youth work (youth hostel Oase since 1981).
