The World's Most Famous Picnic Spot

Welcome to the Macedon Ranges, home to one of the world's most famous picnic spots - Hanging Rock.

Rumoured to have been the haunt of bushranger 'Mad Dog' Morgan, this small extinct volcano (or mamelon) was formed by an upheaval of lava millions of years ago. It was made famous by the classic Australian novel and later movie Picnic at Hanging Rock, the mythic tale of the Valentine's Day disappearance of a group of schoolgirls and their teacher while visiting Hanging Rock in 1901. The legend endures, and an air of mystery and intrigue still lingers.

The mound of massive granite tors is riddled with caves, tunnels and overhanging boulders, its shapes and acoustic echoes enhancing its already spooky reputation making it an ideal hiking destination with the views from the top well worth the walk.

Surrounded by breath-taking natural scenery, expansive forests and heritage gardens, the Macedon Ranges regions has the sights, sounds, smells and tastes to satisfy every sense - and best of fall, it's only an hour from Melbourne.

Nestled among the rolling hills of the surrounding region is a treasure trove of some of regional Victoria's best food and wine.

3/ Hanging Rock (also known as Mount Diogenes, Dryden's Rock, and to some of its traditional owners as Ngannelong) is a distinctive geological formation in central Victoria, Australia. A former volcano, it lies 718m above sea level (105m above plain level) on the plain between the two small townships of Newham and Hesket, approximately 70 km north-west of Melbourne and a few kilometres north of Mount Macedon.
4/ Lavandula Swiss Italian Farm located in Shepherds Flat, Victoria (about 10 km north of Daylesford) was originally a dairy farm set up by Aquilino Tinetti (b. 1835 d. 1905) in the 1860s. He eventually married Maria Virgilia Martina Capriroli (b. 1850 d. 1932) and had 13 children. The dairy farm ran from 1860 until about 1975. The property and its historic buildings was eventually purchased by Carol White in the late 80s. The buildings were restored and the property was given a new lease of life as a lavender farm and European-style gardens. Besides being a working farm, the property now boasts a number of attractions including guided tours of the original stone farmhouse and a history room

The Pipe Walk - Hiking the Yan Yean Pipeline

In the 1850s, the newly-independent colony of Victoria set out on an ambitious project to build the largest water infrastructure system in Australia: a 32 kilometre pipeline from Yan Yean Reservoir to Melbourne. This is my journey to walk its length and understand its history and stories through hidden ruins, overgrown tracks, impassable bridges and stinging nettles.

I acknowledge the traditional owners of the lands on which this video was filmed, the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung people. I pay respects to Elders past, present and emerging and their extensive historical connection to these places.
