Exact location:
We discovered the charm of Maliba Lodge, Lesotho's exclusive 5-star ecolodge nestled in Tsehlanyane National Park. From luxurious stays to self-catering options, it caters to all, making it the ultimate retreat for families, friends, and couples. We stayed in the Mountain View Rooms for R1100 per night (for 2 people). The views are second to none! Nestled in the northern part of the Maluti Mountains, we dined at the restaurant, relaxed in the private lounge and soaked in the gorgeous Mountain View’s from the deck.

Maliba Lodge is situated only 48km from the Caledonspoort Border Post making it highly accessible for those travelling from South Africa.
We embarked on a soul-refreshing hike and would you believe it's just a short drive from Clarens, South Africa (less than 2 hours). Hiking through the enchanting Maluti Mountains at Maliba Lodge in Lesotho, the 4.7 km trail unveils breathtaking landscapes and leads us to the pristine Holomo Waterfall.
Lesotho (route from Sani Pass, South Africa)
We embarked on a breathtaking journey across Lesotho, the Southern African Mountain Kingdom. In the Suzki Jimny 5 -door, we conquered the Tlaeng Pass, the highest road in Southern Africa at 3240m, via the A1 from Sani Pass, South Africa.
Our adventure unfolded with lively dances among the locals, the sun tenderly kissing the towering mountains, weaving through picturesque villages, encountering sheep strolling the roads, and climaxing with a mesmerizing fire sunset.
First day of 3-day road trip through Lesotho's Maluti Mountains. Around midday we departed Maseru north to Leribe, where we visited a local craft centre and school. After snack lunch at northern town of Butha-Buthe our drive then continued in easterly direction up the Hololo River valley to climb into mountains at 2,820m high Moteng Pass. From there we traversed the 3,000 metre high 46 kms long Roof of Africa road past the Afriski mountain resort at the 3,222 metre Mahlasela Pass, & further south past Letseng Diamond Mine before descending into the deep valleys to small town of Mapholaneng, and further on east towards Mokhotlong. From there the highway passes through small town of Tlokoeng and soon descends down to a bridge crossing the great Senqu River of Lesotho. Here the scenery is breathtaking as you look down onto where the Senqu meets other great rivers in a large basin of gorges before heading south then west into South Africa to become the Orange (Gariep) River. After a brief visit to Mokhotlong we turned back & continued south along the recently constructed A31 highway following the Sehonghong River Valley until a final climb over the 3,240 metre high Koti-Sephola Pass & down to Sani Flats. A short 10km drive further on saw our arrival in darkness at Sani Mountain Lodge by 8pm, where we had a meal & stayed overnight at the nearby backpackers hostel.

Ha Kome Cave Houses in Teyateyaneng, Lesotho
The Kome Caves are a group of cave dwellings made out of mud in the district of Berea, Lesotho 25 km east of Teyateyaneng. The caves are still inhabited by the descendants of the original people who built the caves. The site has been classified as a National Heritage Site. The Ha Kome Cave Village is situated at Pulane area in Berea district. The caves were a hideout for the Basia and one Bataung clans during the Lifaqane Wars and cannibalism. The cave is still inhabited by their descendants to this day. There are also faded San paintings in the cave which indicates that the San also occupied the cave some time prior to their arrival albeit briefly.
The Kome Crafts and Information Office that is about 500 metres up the road from the caves houses locally-made crafts including crafts from Lesotho Mountain Crafts in Teyateyaneng, 21 km from the centre. You will also find a tuck shop and a small café at the centre.
At the Kome Crafts and Information Centre you can have picnic and even strike up a barbecue/braai at one of its many stands. The helpful staff at the centre can help you organise pony treks around the Pulane area and even assist you with guided tours of the Kome Cave Village. Catering is available upon request. Camping is permitted but there aren't any shower facilities.
A high clearance vehicle is recommended if you driving down to the centre and sensible footwear for the the trip to the cave dwellings.
Other places of historical significance near the Ha Kome cave dwellings are the Bokhopa pinnacle where cannibals waylaid their grass robes to trap the passersby and a large overhang where that inhabited in Malimong (Place of the cannibals).
