Mainz (lat. Mogontiacum) is the capital of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate and with 218,578 inhabitants also its largest city. Mainz is an independent district, one of the five regional centers in Rhineland-Palatinate and part of the Rhine-Main area. With the neighboring Hessian state capital Wiesbaden, it forms a cross-border dual center with around 495,000 inhabitants. Mainz and Wiesbaden are the only two capitals of German territorial states with a common city border.
The city, which was founded in Roman times, is the seat of the Johannes Gutenberg University, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Mainz and several television and radio companies, such as the Südwestrundfunk (SWR) and the Second German Television (ZDF). Mainz is a stronghold of the Rhenish Carnival.

Unsere Moderatorin Lisa Kestel begibt sich für uns auf Erkundungstour durchs schöne Mainz, die Landeshauptstadt von Rheinland-Pfalz. Vor der Stadt befindet sich das größte deutsche Weinanbaugebiet Rheinhessen. Nicht umsonst begleiten Woi und eine Menge Schoppen den Mainzer tagtäglich. Rund 220.000 Einwohner leben hier und sind nur eine Brücke vom nächsten Bundesland und der hessischen Landeshauptstadt Wiesbaden entfernt. Die Meenzer blühen nicht nur in ihrer närrischen Jahreszeit der Fastnacht auf, auch die Wissenschaft spielt bei ihnen eine große Rolle. So wurde Mainz 2011 zur Stadt der Wissenschaft gekürt. Bekannt sind hier sicherlich die ZDF-Mainzelmännchen, es gibt aber noch weitere andere kreative Köpfe, die die Stadt zu einer besonderen machen. Es gibt also sehr viel zu sehen und zu entdecken!
