Mahishadal Rajbari or Mahishadal Royal Palace (West Bengal, near Haldia) both old and new are worth visiting by the history and heritage lovers. It is one of the most popular tourist spots in Purba Medinipur. This video is about my visit to Mahishadal Rajbari in Purba Midnapur on our mandatory Independence Day long drive on 15/08/2022.
A North Indian businessman, named Janardhan Upadhyay Garg, developed a large estate in the 16th century. He bought the Zamindari from the then Raja Kalyan Roy Chowdhury who failed to pay the revenue to the king and King Akbar declared him Raja by issuing a charter. The estate of the Zamindari was later transferred to Guru Prasad Garg, grandson of Mata Janaki. During the days of Rani Janaki Devi, it reached its zenith in the 18th century.
There are two palaces namely Rangi Basan (or Amrakunja, the old one) established in 1840 and Phulbagh (the new one) established in 1926. There are Durbar room, Shikar room, rest room, arms room, games room. They were involved in various philanthropic activities of that area. The Gopal Jeu and Ram Jeu temples within the Rajbari complex are popular with tourists.

The Rajbari is usually open for visitors from 10am to 6pm daily.

How to go?
1)Howrah to Mecheda by Train then Mohishadal Bus from Mecheda.
2)Bus from Esplanade to Nurpur, then you need to take a ferry from Nurpur to reach the Geonkhali and then From Geonkhali to Mohishadal.
3)Kolkata to Mahishadal by private car via Kolaghat through NH16. From Kolaghat take left towards Nandakumar. From Nandakumar Circle, take left towards Mahishadal Palace.

The museum is well-maintained, and the exhibits are accompanied by informative descriptions, making it a fascinating experience.

Mahishadal Royal palaces (Mohishadal Rajbari (In Bengaliমহিষাদল রাজবাড়ি))( West Bengal, near Haldia) both old and new are worth visiting by the history and heritage lovers. The royal family came from outside Bengal and had a powerful existence. they fought with Maratha Bargis (Maratha Inveder) . And brought Portuguese soldiers from Goa to combat with Marathas. They were involved in various philanthropic activities of that area. the royal Garg family produced fine musicians also . Huge buildings old and new are worth visiting. We need to preserve such heritage.

History
A businessman from north India, Janardhan Upadhyay Garg, developed a large estate in the 16th century. During the days of Rani Janaki Devi, it reached its zenith in the 18th century.[2] There are two palaces – the old one was built in 1840 and the new one in 1935. One can see stuffed animals, hunting weapons of the 16th and 17th century, paintings and furniture. Gopaljew and Ramjew temples are popular with tourists. The place is half an hours drive from Haldia.
The history of the Mahishadal Raj is a long and interesting one. Birnarayan Roy Chowdhury of the Tamralipta Raj family was the first to settle here. The village known today as Geonkhali, located in the Mahishadal block, was then known by its original name, “Jiban Khali”. Sometime in the 16th century, Birnarayan’s descendant Kalyan Roy Chowdhury, who was the zamindar, was found to be defaulting in revenue payments. Emperor Akbar had him removed, and replaced him with the young Janarddan Upadhayay who had come to this part of the country from what is present day Uttar Pradesh. The Upadhyays were granted the title Raja and ran the Zamindari well for the next four generations. However when Anandalal Upadhyaya died in 1804 without a male heir, the zamindari passed to his daughter’s son, Raja Guruprasad Garg. The Gargs remained the zamindars of the area, contributing substantially to the social welfare of the area until independence and the abolition of the zamindari system.
The word Rajbari is Bengali literally means “King’s house”, but a more accurate translation would probably be “stately home” or even “palace”. The principal structure in the Mahishadal Rajbari complex is called the Phul Bagh Palace. This was built in 1900 and was originally meant as a guest house, which would explain its lack of a “zenana” or ladies’ quarters. The architectural style is a mix of classical, colonial and central Indian and it looks rather magnificent set in the middle of a vast and open garden. The Maharani Kaliyar Dala Devi was probably the last resident of the Phul Bagh Palace. The descendants of the Mahishadal Raj now live in Calcutta, although the link with their ancestral property remains. The palace was in a dilapidated state for many years, but is now being repaired and painted. The interiors of the ground floor have been converted into a museum, containing many interesting articles, such as weapons, old furniture, Belgian glassware, stuffed animals that the Rajas hunted and even the letter from Lord Lansdowne granting the title of “Raja” to the head of the family at that time. There is also a large collection of photographs. The Gargs were great connoisseurs of music and the who’s who of Indian Classical music have visited the palace and performed here. The palace was, and remains a favourite with filmmakers, and many films have been shot here. In and around the Phul Bagh Palace are many more smaller but beautiful mansions and a small army of guards is employed even today to guard the property.
Some distance away from the Phul Bagh Palace, lies the old palace of the Mahishadal Raj. This was built in 1857 and is in a derelict state today. It is a large and magnificent two storied structure, with beautiful arches above its windows. A basement with what is probably storage space may also be seen. Close by is the cutchery (court house) and the magnificent Radha Gobindo temple, which houses the family deity of the Mahishadal Raj. Built in Bengal’s well known “Navaratna” or “Nine Jewelled” style, the exterior of the temple is ornamented but does not contain the terracotta tiles that Bishnupur is famous for. Above the main entrance to the temple, a tablet written in an ancient form of the Bengali script offers some clues as to its origins for those who can read the script. Within the Mahishadal Rajbari complex there also exists a brick octagonal Rasmancha.

This is the 36th vlog by Shouvik and Sumana. They both travel about 100 Km from Serampore to spend a day in Mahishadal Rajbari.
The day started with heavy rains on the way towards Mahishadal. Shouvik and Sumana had to find creative ways to shoot the entire vlog while protecting the camera gear. It took them about 3 hours to reach the place.
Upon reaching the Rajbari, they were greeted by the caretaker, Lakshmi Da. They were given a room to rest up while Lakshmi Da prepared some hot tea for both of them and narrated the historical significance of the place. He cordially invited them to the restricted areas of the Rajbari which is otherwise not available to the visitors.
There is a small museum at the Rajbari full of coins, guns, swords and other weapons along with a display of stuffed animals hunted by the ancestors of the Rajbari family members.
In the afternoon they were served lunch with fish and chicken retrieved from the Rajbari premises.
After lunch, Sumana, Shouvik and Lakshmi da took them around the estate and narrated more stories.
After spending some more time at the place, it was time to bid adieu and head home only to started editing this vlog.
