Lake Magadi is the southernmost lake in the Kenyan Rift Valley, lying in a catchment of faulted volcanic rocks, north of Tanzania's Lake Natron. During the dry season, it is 80% covered by soda and is well known for its wading birds, including flamingos.
Lake Magadi is a saline, alkaline lake, approximately 100 square kilometers in size, that lies in an endorheic basin formed by a graben. The lake is an example of a saline pan. The lake water, which is a dense sodium carbonate brine, precipitates vast quantities of the mineral trona (sodium sesquicarbonate). In places, the salt is up to 40 m thick. The lake is recharged mainly by saline hot springs (temperatures up to 86 °C) that discharge into alkaline lagoons around the lake margins, there being little surface runoff in this arid region. Most hot springs lie along the northwestern and southern shorelines of the lake. During the rainy season, a thin (less than 1 m) layer of brine covers much of the saline pan, but this evaporates rapidly leaving a vast expanse of white salt that cracks to produce large polygons. A single species of fish, a cichlid Alcolapia grahami, inhabits the hot, highly alkaline waters of this lake basin and is commonly seen in some of the hot spring pools around the shoreline, where the water temperature is less than 45 °C.

KENYA: Magadi Soda, Magadi
Magadi Soda lies on the shore of the salt lake Magadi in South Kenya. It's the hottest place in the country and is a Maasai community built exclusively for the soda processing. It has its own housing blocks and recreation and one of the few rock golf courts in the world. The soda is transported out via a dedicated railway line to the shore at Mombasa.

LAKE MAGADI SAFARI | AFRICA ADVENTURES | FLAMINGOES AND HOTSPRINGS
The Great Rift Valley never ceases to amaze!!
This saline lake is the southernmost lake in the Kenyan Great Rift Valley and occupies the lowest level of the valley measuring approximately 100sq kms. It is located in a semi desert area. Several streams of both hot and cold water flow into the lake. The hot water heavily impregnated with soda. The spring water gush up through the caked crust dyeing the waters a vivid pink.
Lake Magadi is well known for its wading birds, including flamingos and Pelicans.
Flamingoes are unique. They breed in extreme habitats and feed in various species of algae thus they thrive in waters with very high concentrations of salt.
TIP: This makes the lake an ideal spot for watching flamingoes.
Lake Magadi is located southern part of Kenya and 106 Kilometers/ 65Miles from Nairobi. However, the drive can take up to five hours depending on the vehicle.
It is highly advised to take a four-wheel-drive or at least a vehicle with high ground clearance.
Lake Magadi is a large but shallow lake boasting 33.5 Kilometers long / 21miles and 3.5Kilometers/ 2.1 Miles.
Why Is The Lake Magadi Pink?
The reason why Lake Magadi is pink: The minerals formed by chemicals; the likes of Sodium Carbonates leeched by igneous rocks.
Washed down the valley`s wall and carried into the lake through the hot springs onto the lake’s lip.
When they come into contact with carbon dioxide, they spark as Potassium Carbonate brine.
It is also said Lake Natron in Tanzania Arusha was one large lake with Lake Magadi, am yet to believe this theory.
In this video we take you through a drive around at Lake Magadi. Enjoy!

Lake Magadi is located in the Great Rift Valley, in southern Kenya, in a vast depression whose bed is made almost entirely of solid or semisolid soda. This saline, alkaline lake of approximately 100 square kilometers in size, is composed of a dense sodium carbonate brine which precipitates vast quantities of the mineral trona (sodium sesquicarbonate), the raw material for soda ash or simply sodium carbonate. In places, the salt is up to 40 meters thick. This trona is collected and purified by the Magadi Soda Company and the resulting soda ash is sold for a variety of uses including glass manufacturing, fabric dyeing and paper production. Lake Magadi is among the few places in the world where trona forms naturally, and is the largest source of natural soda ash in Africa.
The mineral is formed by chemicals such as sodium carbonate leeched by igneous rocks in this volcanic valley and washed down the valley’s walls and carried into the lake’s trough by the hot springs on the edges of the lake. When they come in contact with carbon dioxide, they precipitate as sodium carbonate brine.
The lake is located at the lowest point of the Rift Valley in a catchment area of faulted volcanic rocks. It has no permanent rivers entering the lake, and is fed only by surface runoff, usually from the short and long rains experienced in this area. The hot and arid condition heats up the surface runoff to as high as 80°C, giving rise to hot springs along the perimeter of the lake that feed the perennial lagoons on the lake’s margins. During the rainy season, about a meter deep layer of brine covers much of the saline pan, but this evaporates rapidly leaving a vast expanse of white salt that cracks to produce large polygons.
The Magadi township lies on the lake's east shore, and is home to the Magadi Soda factory. About a thousand people live here. Recently, the town has developed accommodation for tourists as well as providing visitors with air conditioned canvas tents to stay.
