No cars allowed! Bikes, horses and fudge only! The things to do on Mackinac Island are endless. Take a ferry under the Mackinac Bridge, or bike around M-185, the only U.S. Highway without cars. Check out amazing viewpoints like Arch Rock or visit Fort Mackinac. It's all here in our travel guide to this wonderful summer destination.
This video is part of our epic road trip to all 5 US Great Lakes (Ontario, Erie, Huron, Superior & Michigan) where we visited Niagara Falls in New York, Sleeping Bear Dunes, Pictured Rocks and Apostle Islands National Lakeshores, Mackinac Island, the Porcupine Mountains (Porkies as they say in da UP), the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Ohio, the Henry Ford Museum in Detroit, the Lakeshore bike trail in Chicago, Frankenmuth the year-round Christmas city - are you tired yet? Oh and we ate a lot of pasties and fudge. Like a lot of fudge. So much fudge that we actually take no offense to the Yoopers and Trolls calling us Fudgies. We've been called much worse. Mackinac Island in Michigan felt like a theme park:
- a short ferry ride is required to get there
- there are no cars allowed only horses and their carriages
- you'll find the majestic Mackinac Island Grand Hotel rivaling the imaginary Grand Budapest Hotel
- there are endless mounds of fudge (check out Joann's Fudge) and good restaurants
- you can take a dip in the crystal clear waters #unsalted with an arch rock to hike up to
You get the idea. This place has a rich history, and although this is not a travel guide per se, we do share what an action-packed day would look like on the island!

The Perfect Day on Mackinac Island in Michigan
Mackinac Island is a charming place with horse-drawn carriages waiting to whisk you away through streets that feel untouched by time. Around each corner, you will smell the sweet temptation of fudge that lofts from many of the store windows and indulge in great food and fantastic shopping. Plus, grab a bike and head out on a 8 mile ride around the island. We really fell in love with Mackinac Island and had the perfect day exploring this special place.
