Arusha, meer dan safari! | Authentiek Tanzania #1 | Charlie’s Travels

Reis off the beaten track met Charlie's Travels! 🦁

Maasai Boma near Arusha, Tanzania.

Maasai Tribe - Boma

The Maasai people don’t live in villages. They live in family compounds called “Boma”. A Boma is a homestead headed by one male, consisting of houses for each of his wives and their children. Maasai are polygamous, and Maasai women build their huts in husband’s Bomas. The final number of these huts depends on how big the family becomes.

I visited such a community of Maasai people near Arusha in Tanzania with my camera. It was just the beginning of the exploration Tanzania and our small group of travelers was fully supplied with water for the whole trip. Being advised to hydrate ourselves with minimum 3 liters of water per day we realized quickly that it is much too much for us. So, we decided to leave the chief of Maasai community the half of our supply. In fact it was just unnecessary baggage for us and our jeeps before Safari.

How surprised I was when after coming back to England I received an email from Arusha. That was a message from Tanzania awaiting me with grateful thanks for the biggest water supply the village ever had. The leader of Maasai community we visited walked to Arusha almost 40 km to send this email to me. I will never forget the experience with Maasai tribe.

The lesson from this experience I took is unforgettable.
What is average for us, people from developed countries, is sometimes an unaffordable dream for others.
