Northumberland Castles & Coast road trip touring planner

Experience the beauty of Northumberland’s rugged coast, and stunning beaches. Discover vast Roman history as well as the stories behind the coasts’ fortified castles. Visit islands, nature reserves and northern Europe’s largest man-made lake with forest to explore. Indulge in traditional fish and chips and gaze out to sea from traditional coastal towns.

This linear route goes from Kielder Water to Lindisfarne (or in reverse, if you’re heading down in a southerly direction) and takes 3 or 4 days (you need to wait for the tide!), depending upon stops.

The distance is around 177 miles (286m), with a drive time of around 5.5 hours without stops. This doesn’t factor in stops for Hadrian’s Wall - as there are several parts to visit and you may wish to spend a couple of days visiting all of these or head to the nearest, depending upon what time you have available. Passing Newcastle-upon-Tyne on the way? We’ve included Newcastle within the travel time and have added some great experiences to enjoy too.

Holy Island || Lindisfarne Castle | (A Beautiful Beach) | Americans in the UK | Family Vlog

While on Holiday we visited Holy Island, a coastal tidal island in Northeast England, to see Lindisfarne Castle. On the island we discovered a large, expansive, and beautiful beach. The beach was truly beautiful.... and empty! I was shocked that such a lovely beach could be deserted. But it was perfect for exploring, running, and enjoying the vast space.

The hike to the beach was also enjoyable as it was much further to the water than expected. Also, we had no idea that a beautiful beach was waiting at the end of the hike... that made it all worth while.

If you get a chance I highly recommend Holy Island, the village on the island, the beach, and Lindisfarne Castle as excellent day trip locations.

***Please be mindful of the tide schedule and never try to drive through high or rising tidal waters. For your safety, Beware. 👍🏾

Britain has so many beautiful and hidden gems like Holy Island.

You can't miss Bamburgh and Alnwick if you are visiting Northumberland. Bamburgh was listed as the best Seaside Town in the UK by Which? in 2023.

Join us on our trip to Bamburgh and Alnwick in Northumberland, United Kingdom as part of our United Kingdom Travel Guide. Bamburgh is famous for its amazing castle and stunning beach and Alnwick for its bustling shops and markets.

We start our journey on the beautiful Northumberland coast at Bamburgh including a walk along the beautiful Bamburgh Beach. One of the best places to see Bamburgh castle is from the beach and in our opinion Bamburgh beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in the UK.

We'll then take you to Alnwick, famous for Alnwick Castle which was used during the filming of Harry Potter. If you are looking for Harry Potter filming locations, this is one of the best places to see.

Alnwick is also home to the famous Barter Books which is located in the old Alnwick Train Station. In this book shop you'll find an incredible selection of vintage books plus a fantastic dog friendly cafe.

While visiting England you should definitely add Bamburgh and Alnwick to your list. We love visiting Northumberland and try to visit at least once a year. Northumberland has some fantastic places to visit so check our our other Towels Travels videos as part of our Northumberland Travel Guide.

Northumberland Coast Wigwam Holiday

Northumberland Coast Wigwam Holiday Diary

A few days spent with Pot-a-Doodle-Do Wigwam Holidays in Scremerston, Northumberland. Just outside Berwick-upon-Tweed.

As well as the scenic Northumberland coastline, the area also boasts some fascinating historic areas. A few excellent examples from World War 2 were within walking distance of our accomodation. A former gun box battery defence is on the back at Cocklawburn. And about a mile away sits the former WW2 Spittal Chain Low Radar Station.

Being just over the border from Scotland, Edinburgh is easily accessible via train in under 45 minutes. We explored the Forth Bridge and Edinburgh Castle.

A few miles up the coast is the historic Lindisfarne Holy Island. Accessible only at certain times of the day over the tidal causeway, the Holy Island has a castle, priory and delightful buildings on every corner.

My channel was set up in 2020 mainly to feature my running adventures. I planned to film and showcase the days out and destinations my running travels took me. Mainly the Peak District and the sights and marvels of Sheffield and the surrounding regions.

However due to Covid restrictions, I found a new interest in researching and exploring old abandoned places - railway lines, canal, woodland, parks to name a few.
So the videos you'll find will be mainly be of those things. Of course, where possible I'll be running to my destination.

A pilgrimage to Lindisfarne

We chose to walk from our campsite to Holy island along the Pilgrims path , following the poles along the sand.
I needs to be walked an hour to two hours after the causeway opens as the water levels are still to high to walk it before then.
We had atmospheric mist and after a pint in the pub we had haunting wailing winds on the way back. We were imagining being mediaeval pilgrims, rescuing lost soles.

How Oysters Are Farmed In Scotland’s Lochs | Regional Eats

Local landowner Johnny Noble and marine biologist Andy Lane started the Loch Fyne Oyster Farm in 1978. Since then, they've grown it into a global business. They export internationally to Barbados, South Africa, and Hong Kong, as well as stocking in prestigious London retailers. But what makes these oysters so special? Loch Fyne farms Pacific oysters, which can be found at various locations on the Scottish coast. These oysters are harvested all around the world, including France, Australia, and New Zealand. Pacific oysters constitute 80% of the global oyster trade and were introduced to the UK in 1964 to replace low stocks of the British native oysters. The native variety can be more expensive and rare, but also riskier to consume.

The Scottish lochs have unparalleled water quality. And this loch, in particular, is of class A purity at least six months of the year.Safety here is paramount. Loch Fyne monitors the water constantly for toxins, as do the local authorities. To eliminate viruses, each oyster undergoes a series of checks, starting the moment it arrives from the hatchery.
