Linares es un municipio y ciudad8 española perteneciente a la provincia de Jaén, en la comunidad autónoma de Andalucía. Es el segundo municipio más poblado de la provincia, ya que cuenta con 55 729 habitantes según el padrón municipal del INE de 2022.9 El término municipal linarense abarca una extensión de 197,5 km² y en su interior se ubican tanto la ciudad de Linares como la entidad local autónoma de la Estación de Linares-Baeza.10
El municipio se localiza en la zona central de la provincia de Jaén, entre el sector oriental de Sierra Morena y la parte alta de la depresión del río Guadalquivir, por lo que se pueden apreciar dos sectores bien diferenciados: la sierra y la campiña. Linares goza de una situación geográfica privilegiada por su condición de encrucijada de caminos11 y por su riqueza agrícola, pecuaria y minera. El municipio de Linares está situado en la comarca de Sierra Morena,2 de la cual es capital, ocupa el 14 % de su superficie y representa la mayor parte de su población total.
Al ser la ciudad más poblada del norte de la provincia, Linares acoge diversos servicios de la Administración General del Estado y de la Junta de Andalucía,12131415 tanto para la población que alberga como para la de un gran número de municipios vecinos, además de un centro universitario dependiente de la Universidad de Jaén ubicado en un moderno campus científico-tecnológico.16 La ciudad se caracteriza por una clara vocación al sector servicios, tras la desaparición de la totalidad de la industria de extracción minera durante el final del siglo xx.1

Linares is a city located in the Andalusian province of Jaén, Spain. Located in the Central-Western part of the province, the city of Linares is the second-biggest city in the province after the capital, Jaén. It is also the commercial capital of Sierra Morena, as well as the referential city in the surrounding areas.
The city has a Mediterranean Climate clearly divided into four seasons, with hot and dry summers where the temperatures can reach frequently 40°C, two transitioning seasons, spring and autumn, that concentrate most of the annual rainfall and a moderate winter, with temperatures that can sometimes drop below 0°C during night time, and occasional rainfall.
The city is well connected to the rest of Spain. There is a railroad station at Linares-Baeza, with lines connecting Madrid and Cádiz, and Madrid-Granada-Almería.
Around the middle of the nineteenth century Linares became an important mining center with lead mines nearby. The smelting of lead, the manufacture of lead sheets and pipes, and the production of by-product silver from the lead ores led to a significant population increase. The 6,000 inhabitants in 1849 became 36,000 in 1877. This commercial and industrial growth brought the concession of the title of city in 1875.
