Places to see in ( Lerwick - UK )

Places to see in ( Lerwick - UK )

Lerwick is the main port of the Shetland Islands, Scotland, located more than 100 miles off the north coast of mainland Scotland on the east coast of the Shetland Mainland. Lerwick is about 210 miles (340 km) north-northeast of Aberdeen, 230 miles (370 km) west of Bergen in Norway and 230 miles (370 km) south east of Tórshavn in the Faroe Islands.

Lerwick is a busy fishing and ferry port. The harbour also services vessels supporting the offshore oil industry. Significant buildings in Lerwick include Fort Charlotte, Lerwick Town Hall, the Böd of Gremista, Shetland Museum and Archives and Clickimin Broch.
Because of the historic nature of the area, some scenes from BBC's Shetland (TV series) were filmed in Lerwick. Lerwick is served by the Tingwall Airport located a few miles away and Sumburgh Airport that is further south and flies all year to some Scotland destinations.

Northlink Ferries operate a daily overnight ferry service between Lerwick and Aberdeen, regularly calling in to Kirkwall in the Orkney Islands. The Shetland Islands Council operate a ro-ro ferry service to Out Skerries and Bressay from a terminal in the centre of the town. Lerwick has three schools; Bell's Brae Primary School, Sound Primary School and Anderson High School.

Lerwick has strong ties with Scandinavian countries, particularly Norway (Lerwick has a friendship agreement with Måløy in Norway), and this is reflected in the street names of Lerwick (e.g. King Harald Street, King Haakon Street). Lerwick is the focus of most events in Shetland, including the largest of the annual Up Helly-Aa fire festivals which takes place on the last Tuesday of January every year.

( Lerwick - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting the city of Lerwick . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Lerwick - UK

Lerwick Shetland Walking Tour - Knab Coastline, Lodberries, Clickimin Broch & Town Center

Join me on a Lerwick Shetland Walking Tour to the Knab Coastal Walk, Lodberries, Clickimin Broch & Town Center. The natural beauty and culture is amazing to experience on a walking tour. #shetland #scotland

The Shetland Islands are a subarctic archipelago in the Northern Isles of Scotland. The Atlantic Ocean lies to the west and the North Sea to the east of Shetland. Just 16 of about 100 islands are inhabited. Its landscapes dramatically vary in form, such as, rocky crags, lofty sea-cliffs, fertile farmlands, pebble beaches, heather moors and sand dunes.

Even though the Shetlands are part of UK, their roots also connect with Old Norse. The Norse heritage shows in their archeological sites, culture and unique dialect using Old Norse. Also, Shetland is home to the iconic Shetland ponies, with their short legs and heavy fur.

Lerwick is the capital with a population of about 7,000 on the main island. It’s sheltered from the south-westerly gales by Bressay Island across the sound. Lerwick means ‘muddy waters’ in Old Norse. In the 1700’s it was the unofficial marketplace for the Dutch herring fishing fleets and smuggling days.

Lerwick, Shetland.

Lerwick, Shetland.

Lerwick is the capital and main port of the Shetland Islands, located on the east coast of Mainland Shetland.

More recently, Shetland has become famous for its fictional detective Jimmy Perez from the BBC series named after the islands.

It has a population of about 7,500 residents, making up nearly one-third of Shetland's total population. The town's name comes from Old Norse Leirvik, meaning muddy bay. Lerwick only became Shetland's capital in the 1830s, replacing the previous capital of Scalloway. The town grew from an unofficial 17th century marketplace servicing Dutch herring fleets. It was actually demolished twice in the early 1600s due to its illegal status before becoming established. Many of the sandstone buildings along the waterfront date back to the 18th century. Lerwick's impressive Town Hall, completed in 1883, stands on a hill above the town centre. The town is an important fishing port, with more fish landed in Shetland than in England, Wales and Northern Ireland combined. Lerwick is served by ferry connections to Aberdeen and Kirkwall, as well as being 24 miles from Sumburgh Airport. Key attractions include the Shetland Museum and Archives, the ancient Clickimin Broch, and wildlife boat tours to spot seabirds and seals. Lerwick hosts the largest of Shetland's annual 'Up Helly Aa' fire festivals each January.

'Shetland', is also a BBC detective drama based on Ann Cleeves' novels, first aired in 2013. The series, set in the picturesque Shetland Isles, follows local police as they investigate complex crimes within a close-knit community. Initially featuring DI Jimmy Perez, portrayed by Douglas Henshall, the show has evolved, introducing DI Ruth Calder, played by Ashley Jensen, in its eighth season. The series is acclaimed for its stunning landscapes and compelling storytelling, boasting an IMDb rating of 8.3/10 and multiple awards.

The Shetland Islands provide a unique backdrop for a detective series due to their stunning, remote landscapes and isolation, which create an atmospheric setting for mysteries. The islands' proximity to Norway and their rugged beauty add a Scandinavian feel, enhancing the series' dark themes. The close-knit community dynamics allow for intricate character interactions and secrets, making the crimes more personal and impactful. The setting also reflects the harsh realities of life in such a remote area, contributing to the series' depth and intensity

Music: Back to the Highland, Christian Andersen; Fly on the Wall, Deskant, Epidemic Sound.
