Leavenworth is a charming Bavarian-themed village at the center of Washington State, located 117 miles to the east of Seattle. Leavenworth is a popular weekend getaway for Seattle residents as well as tourists from afar and is arguably one of the most beautiful places in Washington State. In this video, we break down 10 awesome things to do in and around Leavenworth.

10. Indulge in the German cuisine
There are many restaurants that serve German beer, bratwurst, and pretzels. Our favorite places in town include the “Rhein Haus” for its pretzels and German Beer, and the “München Haus” for its bratwurst.
9. Lake Wenatchee
Lake Wenatchee is about 30 minutes away and is a fun place to explore. During the winter, you can go cross-country skiing around the lake. In summertime, it’s a great place to go for a swim or relax at the beach.
8. Hike the Icicle Ridge Trail
The Icicle Ridge Trail is an easy to moderate hike and a must-do when you’re in Leavenworth. It takes roughly 90 mins to reach the beautiful lookout point, with views of the town and surrounding peaks.
7. Take a walk downtown
With its Alpine-style architecture, it’s an experience in itself to simply walk downtown. Leavenworth is fairly small, but it’s so picturesque that you can easily spend a few hours roaming around. Most of the action takes place in Front Street, which is lined with souvenir shops, bars, wine testing rooms, and restaurants. You can also find two museums here: the Nutcracker museum and the Greater Leavenworth Museum.
6. Lake Chelan
About a one-hour drive to the east of Leavenworth, Lake Chelan is a 50 mile long pristine lake. It’s perfect for summer activities, such as boating, fishing, swimming, and kayaking.
5. Explore the waterfront
Leavenworth’s waterfront park can easily be explored on foot. There are many trails that wind through the park, offering beautiful vistas of both the river and the mountains.
4. Go wine tasting
Leavenworth is home to many wineries that host tasting rooms. Our favorite one is the Icicle Ridge Winery, which has two tasting rooms in downtown Leavenworth. But for a more idyllic setting, it’s also possible to taste wine at their log home tasting room in nearby Peshastin.

3. The Peshastin Pinnacles
The Peshastin Pinnacles state park is about a 15 minute drive from Leavenworth. A grouping of tooth-like sandstone rocks stand tall here against the vineyards and golden hills of the Wenatchee Valley.
2. Colchuck day hike
Colchuck is known as the most beautiful lake near Leavenworth, if not in all of Washington State. The hike is about 8 mi round trip with 2280 ft of elevation gain, and takes between 4.5 to 6 hours total.
1. The Enchantments hike
As if Colchuck Lake alone weren’t enough beauty, it is also one of the two gateways to the magical Enchantments area. This hike is extremely tough if done in a day as it is more than 20 mi end-to-end. However, getting to these awe-inspiring alpine lakes is absolutely worth it. You can also break up your journey by camping, but must get lucky in the lottery system if you want to stay overnight in the area.

Whether you want to hike right up to waterfalls, admire snow-capped mountains from a distance or spend the day on islands off the coast, Washington has it all. It is easy to pack your vacation with city life, world-class attractions, national parks and more while in the Pacific Northwest. Here’s a look at the best places to visit in Washington State:
Perfect Fall Getaway | Leavenworth, Washington | Top Things to Do in America's Bavarian Town
There is no better place to take in the colors and festivities of fall than Bavaria…in Washington state.
Originally, Leavenworth, WA was known as a railroad town filled with settlers, fur traders, and frontiersmen. As the railroad moved out of the area, the town was desperate to find new ways to promote commerce. In the 1960s, the town was given a complete Bavarian makeover to attract visitors and tourists.
As you walk along the main street, you are transported to the German Alps with the town’s Bavarian architecture, music, and treats combined with the majestic Cascade Mountains in the background. If you are adventurous, you can get a great view of the town from an alpine coaster at the Leavenworth Adventure Park or a few of the surrounding forests, orchards, and vineyards from Leavenworth Ziplines. If you are looking for a unique experience, check out the Leavenworth Reindeer Farm to learn about their local herd and meet some of the reindeer. If you are traveling in the Spring or Summer, you might even meet a few of the farm’s newest babies.
Of course, Leavenworth has all of the best German food. The most iconic (meaning, busy!) restaurant is München Haus. But if you aren’t keen on the line, we recommended visiting the Leavenworth Sausage Garten for locally made German sausages and beer. For a sweet treat, grab a gingersnap at the Gingerbread Factory while you explore the shops in town.
At the center of town is an unassuming museum from the outside, but a real treasure for anyone visiting Leavenworth - The Nutcracker Museum. We were really blown away by the museum. It has two floors quite literally filled with nutcrackers of all shapes, sizes, and styles. There is one for every season, every holiday, every pop culture reference from the past and present. They even have one of the earliest discovered nutcrackers dating back to Roman times. This Guinness record breaking museum is a must do
With as much as there is to do in town, there is just as much to do outside of town. Locally, Enchantment Park and Blackbird Island offer a reprieve from the bustle of town with spectacular views of the Wenatchee River. Bring a lunch and you might even be visited by some local wildlife. And you can’t visit the apple capital of Washington (and the US) without a visit to a fruit stand or winery. Just outside of town is Smallwood's Harvest, a fruit stand, gift shop, petting zoo, kid’s playground…you name it, they have it!

One of the best things to do in Leavenworth, Washington, is to go on a tour of the Leavenworth Nutcracker Museum. With over 7,000 dazzlingly colored sculptures, the Leavenworth Nutcracker Museum has one of the world's largest collections of nutcrackers. Downtown's George and Arlene Wagner opened up shop on what is now a museum in 1995. (also known as the nutcracker lady). Over 50 countries are represented, with nutcrackers ranging from wood and metal to ivory. The museum, located in the center of downtown, was founded in 1995 by George and Arlene Wagner (also known as the nutcracker lady). It features nutcrackers from over 50 nations, made of materials such as wood, metal, and ivory.
Also on the list of best things to do in Leavenworth, Washington, is to get a taste of Leavenworth's thriving microbrewery scene. It would be remiss of any tourist visiting Washington State not to sample some of the state's many great beers in their original brewing places in Leavenworth. Beer lovers will appreciate the variety available at Bushell & Bee Taproom, a bar named after its hive logo and located in Portland, Oregon. Beer and cider at Bushell & Bee are delicious because they are made using apples from Washington state's best orchards. There's a real beer to drink there, and it's high-quality stuff with a superb reputation. People who appreciate a fine beer should make a point of traveling to Leavenworth
