Peștera Mare de la Merești (Cheile Vârghișului, Munții Perșani, România)

Peștera Mare de la Merești (Orbán Balázs barlang, în ungurește) se află în zona central-sudică a Cheilor Vârghișului (extremitatea nordică a Munților Perșani), pe versantul stâng al văii, fiind cea mai mare peșteră din această zonă. A fost cartată în detaliu de către Fekete Istvan în anul 1835, cercetările fiind completate ulterior de Orbán Balázs, al cărui nume, în varianta ungurească, a fost de altfel atribuit acestei peșteri. Accesul în peşteră se face pe o scară metalică, intrarea în peșteră (12 metri lăţime şi 6 metri înâlţime) fiind una din cele mai mari din țară. Peştera a fost folosită de localnici drept refugiu împotriva năvălitorilor, dovadă stând încă urmele zidului de apărare de la intrare. Peştera Mare de la Merești se remarcă prin numărul mare de lilieci ale căror sunete se aud pe tot parcursul galeriilor.

There's no better place to be than the forest. If offers us shelter, it offers us peace of mind, if offers us fruits of nature to feed on, or firewood to get ourselves warm in the evenings. And eastern Serbia, the serbian part of the Carpathian mountains, has lots of it. Getting from my home in Lipovica to the Iron Gate gorge of the Danube takes some 100 km of the most enjoyable ride through the carpathian forests. I went for my regular round of scouting, to check out if everything is still as it used to be, and recorded some footage. I hope you will enjoy these few days spent among the wonderful Homolje ridges as much as I have enjoyed them.
