🇵🇹 Riding LISBON’s Famous Lavra Funicular (Elevador do Lavra) | Portugal | 4K HDR 60fps
This 4k video was recorded during our trip to Lisbon, Portugal in July 2021. I hope you will enjoy this virtual ride.
The Elevador do Lavra, also known as the Ascensor do Lavra or Lavra Funicular, is a funicular railway in Lisbon, Portugal. Opened in 1884, the railway is the oldest funicular in the city. The 188m-long funicular connects Largo da Anunciada to Rua Câmara Pestana in the parishes of Santo António and Arroios. The average grade is 22.9% and the railway gauge is 90cm with a central slot for the cable's connection.
The Elevador do Lavra opened on April 19, 1884, and was designed by engineer Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard. Currently, the funicular is owned and operated by Carris. Elevador do Lavra was designated a National Monument in 2002.
About Lisbon:
Lisbon is the main port of Portugal, which is located at the mouth of the Tagus River. This city is located in the picturesque place with numerous hills. That’s why Lisbon is also called city on seven hills. Founded as a large settlement of the tribe of Iberian Lusitano, Lisbon has started its quick development due to its convenient location. After this it was soon conquered by the Roman Empire, then it belonged to the Arab Caliph, and later the French knights set up their ownership. Only in 1256 Lisbon has officially become the capital of Portugal. However, after a large earthquake that had destroyed many historic buildings, the city often became an arena for political clashes. Only the end of World War II has finally brought the city its long awaited peace.
After the devastating earthquake many sights of the city have been restored and today these places as well as other sites that have managed to survive are frequently visited by numerous tourists who come to see this magnificent city.
The city's architecture combines different influences in design referring to various historical periods. Here you can see the Romanesque cathedral of the XII century; several churches built in the Baroque and Manueline styles - Church of St. Vicente de Fora, St. Roque, St. Conceição Velha, the Basilica of La Estrela, the Museum of Church Art; Gothic Carmelite Monastery, a beautiful castle built in the IX - XIV centuries. Lisbon is also rich in other magnificent palaces like Sao Bento, Mafra, Ajuda, Queluz; Geographic Society Museum, a rich Photo Archive and much more.
One of the main symbols of the city is the beautiful Praça do Comercio Square. It is considered one of the most beautiful squares in Europe. The square is located on the bank of a river. For hundreds of years, it served as the real gates of the city. Merchant ships, as well as ships with royal delegations, arrived at the pier near the square. On the square, there are several beautiful monuments, and next to them you can see the most beautiful historical buildings.
Lisbon is recognised as an alpha-level global city because of its importance in finance, commerce, media, entertainment, arts, international trade, education and tourism. Lisbon is one of two Portuguese cities (alongside Porto) to be recognised as a global city.
Lisbon is one of the oldest cities in the world, and the second-oldest European capital city (after Athens), predating other modern European capitals by centuries.

Lisbon Travel Guide - Portuguese Charm
Lisbon Travel Guide - Portuguese Charm
The capital of Portugal, Lisbon (Portuguese: Lisboa) has experienced a renaissance in recent years, with a contemporary culture that is alive and thriving and making its mark in today's Europe. Perched on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, Lisbon is one of the rare Western European cities that faces the ocean and uses water as an element that defines the city. Lisbon enchants travelers with its white-bleached limestone buildings, intimate alleyways, and an easy-going charm that makes it a popular year-round destination.
Lisbon is built on seven hills. Lisbon's trademark seven hills are spread across the cityscape like lofty guardians of colour and history. Our favourite miradouros – Portas do Sol, São Pedro de Alcântara, da Graça, da Senhora do Monte, Santa Luzia and, of course, Castelo de São Jorge – all offer stunning spots to get your bearings and while away afternoons over bica (espresso), elegant glasses of Touriga Nacional or refreshing pitchers of sangria, while rubbernecking the city's stupendous horizons.
The Lisboa Card, which can be purchased from tourist information outlets, offers free use of all public transport in the city and free or reduced price tickets to many museums, galleries and tourist attractions. Lisbon enjoys a warm climate with mild winters and very warm summers. Strongly influenced by the Gulf Stream, it is one of the mildest climates in Europe. Among all the metropolises in Europe, here are the warmest winters on the continent, with average temperatures around 15°C (59°F) during the day and 9°C (48°F) at night in the period from December to February. Snow and frost are very rare.
The city stretches along the northern bank of the river Tejo as it flows into the Atlantic Ocean. As the terrain rises north away from the water, steep streets and stairways form the old tangled districts or give way to green parks in the western suburbs. In the city centre, the vast Praça do Comércio, facing the river at the base of the pedestrianized grid of Baixa (lower town), occupies a central position. Further northwest from Baixa stretches Lisbon's Main Street, Avenida da Liberdade, a broad boulevard resplendent in leafy trees, chic hotels and upmarket shops, terminating at the circular Praça de Marques de Pombal. To the east are old districs of Mouraria and Alfama, both relatively spared during the Great Earthquake (as they are on a firmer rock) and therefore both retaining the charm of the winding alleys and azulejo-covered crumbling walls (further north lie relatively boring residential quarters). To the west the hill rises steeply into Bairro Alto (upper town; prepare to trek up, or take one of the elevadores, or funiculars); still further west are the rapidly gentrifying former docks of Alcantara, dominated on the western end by the supports of the gigantic new bridge over the river, and the suburbs of Santo Amaro and Belém.
Lisbon has a very efficient public transport network that covers the entire city in addition to the surrounding areas. Lisbon's recently refurbished metro system is clean, quick, and efficient. While metro announcements are made only in Portuguese, signs and ticketing machines are generally bilingual in Portuguese and English.

Gloria Funicular, Lisbon - PORTUGAL
Elevador da Glória
A short ride on the funicular takes to to the Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara (Viewpoint) for beautiful views of the city.
Lisbon and its trams & funiculars #travel #lisbonportugal #lisbon #tram #europe
No visit to Lisbon is complete without seeing or riding a Tram or Funicular. Am I right?
Few tips for you to save:
Tram 28
Running from Martin Montez to Campo Ourique, this became to be the most popular tram because it passes through a lot of significant landmarks in the city. However, this also meant large queues. If you really want to take this tram, it is highly recommended to ride it as early as possible and better yet, ride it at Campo Ourique back to Martin Montez (for a better chance of getting a seat).
Elevador Da Gloria
Happens to be the most popular amongst the three funiculars which runs between Restauradores Square and Rua San Pedro de Alcantara. Usually, this one runs every 10 to 15 minutes with each ride lasting for only 2-3 minutes. Reaching the top, you can also walk to Miradouro Sao Pedro which offers a picturesque view of Lisbon
Elevador Da Bica
Running through Rua da Bica de Duarte Belo to get to Bairro Alto. Also known as Ascensor Da Bica or Bica Funicular. Avoid visiting during mid-day as it becomes really crowded with tourists trying to capture a good photo beside it. As always, going there early is ideal. This is also just few minutes walk away from Time Out Market, so you can put both places on your same day itinerary.
Elevador do Lavra
This one is said to be the oldest amongst them which was launched in 1884. Once you reach the top, it is only a few minutes walk to Jardim do Torel, so you can put both places on your same day itinerary.
If you intend to ride all other trams and funiculars while in Lisbon, you can get the Lisboa Card to get unlimited rides on public transportations in Lisbon. Prices depend on the travel period you intend to use it for.

10 Amazing Christian Monasteries
Christian monasticism is a practice that began to develop early in the history of the Christian Church, drawing on biblical examples and ideals, including those of the Old Testament. Originally, all Christian monks were hermits and rarely met other people (monos means alone in Greek).
However, due to the extreme difficulties of individual life, many monks failed, returned to their old lives, or fell into spiritual delusions. As more and more people accepted life as monks, they began to associate with and eventually live in Christian monasteries.
