8 Worst Towns to Live in Northern Ireland
Let us put it in the right context before we take it so far. The expression “worst towns” here is going to be subjective and relative. This is because Northern Ireland is a generally good place to live. Regardless of how good a region is, however, some parts of it will be better than others. On the other hand, those parts of the region that are not regarded as the best are in that context not so good. And if all of the parts of a region are just good, the “least good” among them is invariably the worst. It is in that sense that we now want to show you the 8 worst towns to live in Northern Ireland.
8. Ballymena
Let’s begin with Ballymena, a large town in County Antrim. The town with a population of more than 29,000 is the 8th-largest town in the region by population. But it’s also one of the worst towns to live in Northern Ireland. Gone are those days when the town was prosperous and when a lot of factories were providing job opportunities.
The town has now suffered from a gripping recession that not only deterred investment in manufacturing but also stressed out existing shopping centers. Though some attempts have been made to rejuvenate the town economically, the unemployment rate is still very high. The shopping centers are no longer bustling as they used to be due to badly reduced purchasing power and low demands in the town. Besides, there are several rough areas such as Harryville in the town. Generally, the town that hosts 7 towers lacks prosperity, though it’s one of the safest places to live for people with legitimate business dealings.
7. Lurgan
Lurgan is another large town on this list. It is in County Armagh near the southern shore of Lough Neagh. The town is located about 18 miles southwest of Belfast having been linked together by the M1 motorway. Additionally, the Belfast-Dublin railway line serves this town with a population of 28,634 within the Armagh, Banbridge, and Craigavon districts.
Even then, it is one of the worst towns. It is divided along the religious line, no thanks to the housing anomaly. This is especially apparent in its worst part. Many of the people born in the town would prefer not to live there if they are not landlords. Houses there are usually up for buying to own not to rent. That is why it’s not a good place to live in Northern Ireland for foreigners. You will get rental areas only on Ardboe Drive and Trasna Way. But in Pollock Drive and Grey Estate, you’re in for a completely different experience.
6. Strabane
We’re now in County Tyrone to find the town named Strabane. Lying on the east bank of the Foyle River, it had a population of 13,172. It is located roughly midway from Omagh, Derry, and Letterkenny. Strabane is also on this list of the 8 worst towns to live in Northern Ireland.
Strabane has remained stuck to that unpopular tag not only in NI but also in the UK as a whole. For instance, out of 317 local authority areas in England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, it is the 8th worst to live, according to the research carried out by Channel 4. The research measured 5 criteria homebuyers always consider namely crime, education, employment, environment, and lifestyle. The town performed woefully in all of them. It has been ranking badly for livability for years on end.

Kent’s Heritage Coast: The World's 4th BEST region to visit in 2022 according to Lonely Planet.
Kent celebrates international acclaim this week, after the county was placed number four on a list of the world’s best regions to visit in 2022 by Lonely Planet.
This announcement forms part of the global travel authority’s release of Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2022, which unveils its top 10 countries, cities, and regions to visit next year. The county of Kent, often referred to as The Garden of England, is the only UK destination to feature within this year’s illustrious round-up with a particular focus on Kent’s Heritage Coast.
Kent’s Heritage Coast, part of the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), was praised for its commitment to sustainable tourism initiatives, combined with the regeneration of the historic town of Dover, Creative Folkestone, and plans to establish a UNESCO Global Geopark recognised within the region’s entry.
The publisher also highlighted Kent’s involvement in two Interreg funded projects; the EXPERIENCE project, which supports local tourism and hospitality businesses in developing new, low-environmental impact, year-round tourism experiences including accessibility improvements in the Kent countryside. In addition, the UNESCO Sites Across the Channel project aims to boost sustainable development and inclusion through seeking UNESCO designation
Best in Travel 2022 is Lonely Planet’s 17th annual collection of the world’s hottest destinations and the must-have travel experiences for the year ahead. Nominations are received from Lonely Planet’s vast community of staff, writers, and publishing partners, before being whittled down by a panel of travel experts. Each destination is chosen for its topicality, unique experiences, ‘wow’ factor, and ongoing commitment to sustainable tourism practices.
This latest accolade comes at a particularly pertinent time as Kent’s tourism and hospitality sector, worth £4.1 billion to the local economy pre-pandemic, works to rebuild a vibrant and resilient industry for the future.
Visit Kent, the county’s official destination management organisation, will shortly be launching a partnership with AccessAble to continue to improve accessibility across the county. This, along with plans to launch a sustainability pledge encouraging consumers to make small changes whilst visiting the destination, are two examples of the ongoing commitment from Kent’s tourism and hospitality industry to ensure that visitors receive a welcoming, inclusive, and enjoyable experience, whilst ensuring that travellers have a positive impact for the future.
The Kent Downs AONB are supporting new Changing Places toilets in Kent Country Parks so that severely disabled people, their carers, and their families are able to enjoy a day out in the Kent countryside, confident in the knowledge that there is a toilet nearby that will meet their needs. This is part of an ongoing commitment to understanding and addressing the barriers to accessing the countryside and supporting greater inclusion in access so that more people can enjoy the health and wellbeing benefits of nature. The new toilets are funded by the EXPERIENCE project.
The Kent Downs AONB and Visit Kent will soon launch new bookable sustainable rural tourism experiences and itineraries on their website for visitors to explore wellbeing in nature, delicious food and drink, outdoor adventures, transformative pilgrimage, relaxing tranquillity, family fun, and everything in between.

Poorest Towns in the UK - Greenock, Inverclyde
It’s now time to talk about the ugly sides of towns and cities in the UK that many of the adherents of such towns don’t want to hear. No matter how positively we try to look at the town of Greenock, Inverclyde, we would always find that it is one of the poorest towns in the United Kingdom. If you are objective enough, you won’t be shocked that it is. After all, this is not the first time the town would be ranked this way. You likely have seen it listed among the poorest towns in Scotland. However, is this town poor? If it is, why is it poor? What effect has that had on aspects of life in this town?
Greenock in Brief
Before we go into all that, please let’s tell you a bit more about Greenock. It’s a town in the Inverclyde area. Greenock was home to Greenock Dockyard Company, a shipbuilding firm, the demolished Easter Greenock Castle, Greenock Morton FC, a Scottish football team, and Greenock Telegraph, an Inverclyde local newspaper.
It used to be a former constituency of the British House of Commons, of Greenock and Port Glasgow, a former constituency of the UK House of Commons, and Greenock and Inverclyde, a former constituency of the Scottish Parliament. Today, it is an administrative center in the Inverclyde Council area, though a former burgh within the Renfrewshire historic county. It’s a Scottish town located in the west-central Lowlands.
Is Greenock Really Poor?
Do we really have any justification for describing Greenock as one of the poorest towns in the UK? Let’s look at what stakeholders say about this. We’ll consider statistics and the living cost.
The unemployment rate of the 1970s and 1980s as a result of the decline in industries hasn’t really abated. It continued into the dawn of the millennium such that even two decades into the 21st century, the town still needs to grapple with a serious lack of jobs.
As of October 2012, the unemployment rate in Greenock was 5.3 percent. That was above the Scottish average of 3.9 percent. Of course, this figure was for the Scottish Parliament constituency which includes Gourock, Inverkip, Port Glasgow, and Wemyss Bay. Yet, Greenock’s figure was even worse, if taken in isolation. Ten years, later things have only started improving.
Index of Multiple Deprivation
In reviewing matters of poverty and affluence in the UK, the Index of Multiple Deprivation data is crucially relevant. In this regard, the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (SIMD) is informative. In several SIMDs, this town appears to be seriously lagging. For example, in the latest of this study, Greenock’s center was named the poverty black spot. According to the report, the Inverclyde area, which is mainly Greenock, has the largest share of deprived areas.
This is especially apparent in the domains of income and health, according to the study of these. Even on other indicators such as crime, unemployment, quality of life, and how long people in Greenock need to travel to get to a GP, things aren’t bright for the town. BBB Scotland’s social affairs correspondent, Chris Clement remarked that there were few surprises in that SIMD update regarding its ranking of Inverclyde as Greenock fell from 23 in the last rank to the most-deprived town center in Scotland. He had earlier noticed a high number of hard-drug-related hospital admissions. Ranking second-worst in health outcomes isn’t unexpected. By the way, the town has also been scoring low repeatedly on educational outcomes.
Comparing the economic situation of the town in 2016 to what was in 2020, Jim Clocherty the deputy leader of the Inverclyde Council said that they have discovered that more investment was needed in Greenock communities. While analyzing the available figures, he said: “These figures are a bitter pill to swallow and show that investment can’t come soon enough. No part of Scotland wants to be labeled as the ‘most deprived.”

12 Reasons Why You Should Move To Glasgow
Why should you move to Glasgow, Scotland? Looking for a new city to call home? Check out our guide on why you should move to Glasgow! This city might just be the perfect fit for you.
Everyone has their own reasons for moving to a new city. For some, it's an opportunity to start fresh in a new environment. For others, it's about following their dreams and pursuing new goals. But for those looking for a city that has it all, Glasgow should be at the top of your list.
In this video, we look at why you should move to Glasgow as your new home. So, read on and discover why Glasgow might be the perfect place for you!
12. You Can Easily Get Out to Glasgow
Glasgow may be a big city, but it's actually quite easy to get out into nature if you need a break from the hustle and bustle of urban life. You can find stunning lochs, rolling hills, charming villages outside the city center, and more. If you're feeling city-weary, it's easy to escape to a peaceful place where you can enjoy the beauty of the natural world. And if you're looking for some adventure, there are plenty of opportunities for hiking, biking, and other outdoor activities. Thus, nature is always within reach in Glasgow when you want some peace.
11. Shopping
It is an enjoyable experience to shop in Glasgow. For those who enjoy designer labels, there are plenty of upscale stores to explore. But even if you're not looking to spend a lot of money, there are still plenty of great deals to be found. In addition, the city is home to several independent boutiques that offer a more unique shopping experience. This makes Glasgow a great place to shop for everyday items and special occasions.
10. Live Music
Glasgow is a city that loves its music. No matter what time of year you visit, concerts and festivals always happen throughout the city. And if you're a fan of live music, you'll feel right at home here. There's a wide variety of genres to choose from, so whether you're into rock, pop, folk, or anything in between, you'll be able to find something to your liking. And if you're lucky enough to catch a show at Glasgow's iconic venues like the Barrowland Ballroom or the OVO Hydro, you're sure to have an unforgettable experience. So come on and enjoy the best Scottish culture – the live music scene is not to be missed!
9. Glasgow is Less Touristy
While it's certainly not an unknown city, Glasgow doesn't get nearly as much tourism as other major UK cities like London or Edinburgh. It means you can experience all the city has to offer without crowds of tourists getting in your way! Glasgow has plenty to offer visitors, from its rich history and culture to its stunning architecture and lively nightlife. But because it's not as well-known as other cities, you can enjoy these things without battling crowds of tourists. Moving to Glasgow is worth considering if you're looking for a city that offers all the best of the United Kingdom without the tourist hordes.
8. Amazing Nightlife
Glasgow's nightlife scene is also not to be missed. There's something for everyone, with a wide variety of bars and clubs to choose from. If you're looking for a laid-back atmosphere, there are plenty of pubs where you can relax and chat with friends. Or, if you're looking to let loose and dance the night away, there are plenty of clubs where you can do just that. And if you're looking for something in between, many bars offer a more lively atmosphere without being too hectic. No matter your taste, you're sure to find a place that suits you in Glasgow's nightlife scene.

Places to see in ( West Malling - UK )
West Malling is a historic market town in the Tonbridge and Malling district of Kent, England. It has a population of about 2,500 to 5,000. West Malling contains several historic buildings, including St Leonard's Tower, a Norman keep built by Bishop Gundulf (bishop between 1077 and 1108). He also built the White Tower of the Tower of London, the castles of Rochester and Colchester, and the Priory and Cathedral of Rochester. In c.1090 Gundulf founded St. Mary's Abbey in West Malling for Benedictine nuns. This historic site contains significant buildings from the Norman, medieval, Tudor and Georgian eras. There is also a Grade II* Listed 1966 abbey church which is used by the Anglican Benedictine nuns who have made Malling Abbey their home since 1916.
Other buildings of interest in West Malling include the Prior's House, once a residence for those with leprosy; Ford House, over 600 years old; a mainly Georgian High Street; the Swan Hotel, an 18th-century coaching inn (Grade II listed), and Went House, built c.1720 and noted for its elegant brickwork. Manor Park Country Park is just to the south of the town, close to St Leonard's Tower and Douce's Manor, whose grounds the park once comprised.
This new parish is a mixed residential housing estate and commercial development formed from parts of West Malling, Mereworth, East Malling and Wateringbury. The 2004 Wealth of the Nation report lists Kings Hill as having the highest average income and the highest proportion of households earning more than £100,000 per annum in Great Britain.
West Malling is some 35 miles (56 km) from central London, next to the main road between London and the coastal ferry ports of Folkestone and Dover and with good links by road and rail; the area has become a popular commuter location. Originally established on the main road to London from the coast, West Malling is about a mile (1½ km) from Junction 4 of the M20, and from Junction 2 of the M26 which leads on to the M25, encircling London.
West Malling station, situated on the outskirts of the town, provides a regular service, operated by Southeastern Trains, up to Victoria, and down to Maidstone and Ashford. Journeys into London take around one hour. Direct services to London Bridge and Cannon Street were withdrawn in December 2009. With the recent development of Kings Hill, the station was renamed West Malling for Kings Hill, and in 2007 road access was provided from the West Malling bypass, taking commuter traffic away from the High Street.

KENT SNOW falling on 12TH MARCH 2013. Larkfield, lunsford lane, Kent
KENT SNOW 12TH MARCH 2013. Larkfield #lunsford kent. me20 6us, Now the winters are like summer! #Larkfield is a village in #Kent, part of the civil parish of East Malling and Larkfield in the borough of Tonbridge and Malling. Of the two parts of the parish, Larkfield is much more built-up, lying on and north of the main A20 road. The M20 motorway also passes through, with junction 4 residing at the centre of Leybourne on the A228. The name of Larkfield is literal and descriptive – it refers to the large numbers of skylarks found in the fields, its first recorded instance is in Domesday Book as Lavrochesfel.
Larkfield was once a hundred in Kent. Larkfield has expanded rapidly since the M20 motorway was constructed in the 1970s and it continues to grow, with new housing developments being built. These are The Lakes in Leybourne, on disused gravel pits that were turned into man-made lakes. The decision to build on this area was unpopular with some residents, but the remaining lakes were turned into Leybourne Lakes Country Park to offset the impact of the new housing. The village of New Hythe is largely industrial and adjoins Larkfield.
In 1961 Malling Rural District Council developed the Tree(shared with the Parish of Ditton) and Bird estates, where the majority of the roads are named after species of trees and birds respectively. Similarly in Lunsford Park just north of the M20, the roads are named after famous poets.
Larkfield has been of some historical interest throughout recent times, with a number of archaeological discoveries in the area. Close to the main crossroads on the A20, Larkfield Priory Hotel, built-in 1890, is allegedly haunted.
