15 Tourist Attractions in Australia | Most Iconic Places to Visit

Australia is a dream country. Australia is deserving of all the hype, according to armchair travelers as well as the hallowed legends of the Aboriginal Dreamtime, when the great spirits created the coral reefs, rainforests, and red deserts. Australia is approximately the same size as the United States, yet it has a population the size of New York State and some of the most bizarre animals on the planet. It is also the world's smallest continent and largest island.

Australia is a country with astounding contrasts and breathtaking beauty. Explore thriving cities, enormous sand islands, historic rainforests, and one of the world's most amazing natural wonders: the Great Barrier Reef—along the coast. The Outback offers the height of adventure tourism with its untamed national parks and red-eared deserts.

Top it all off with a laid-back feel and friendly people, and it's no wonder Australia scores top billing on bucket lists around the world. With our list of the greatest tourist destinations in Australia, you can plan your own travels.

DESTINATION KUNUNURRA: A week is NOT enough! | Oasis in the East Kimberley

“A good traveller has no fixed plans, and is not intent on arriving.” – Lao Tzu

Kununurra is the eastern gateway to the Kimberley and is a very long way from just about everywhere! On arrival into town, we paused for a mandatory Covid test, then headed straight to Ord Valley Delight (HipCamp) for a peaceful 3-night isolation stay.

Finally free to explore, we enjoyed losing ourselves in the vast, rugged red landscape, remarkable waterways and lush farmlands around Kununurra ... surprising & awe-inspiring!

It's easy to see why a week is not long enough with Kununurra being jam-packed with unique places to visit and things to see including -
# Hoochery Distillery is the oldest operating legal still in WA
# Kelly’s Knob with panoramic views over the town and surrounding ranges
# Ivanhoe Crossing is an iconic causeway built over the mighty Ord River
# Zebra Rock Gallery with its unique stone pieces
# Lake Argyle is a vast freshwater lake nestled amongst the rugged billion-year-old landscape
# Lake Kununurra a haven for swimmers, anglers, bird watchers and water sports enthusiasts alike
# Mirima National Park is often described as the mini-Bungles
# Ord River Diversion Dam designed to divert water from the Ord River onto the Ivanhoe Plain for irrigation
# Argyle Homestead Museum originally built in 1895 by the Durack family
# Two local secrets earmarked on WikiCamps (ssshhhh)

Time to hit the road!

Kununurra Free Camping and Secret Swimming Holes | Epic El Questro Station | Episode 39

No doubt you've seen a lot of the Kununurra hot spots before. So we're taking you to a couple of places you might not have heard about that we think should be on top of your list when visiting the area.

After an excellent 4wd track into the swimming hole at Spring Creek, we headed across Ivanhoe Crossing into Kununurra to resupply for our upcoming journey across The Gibb River Road.

A quick stop for a swim at Molly Springs was high on the list as we made our way towards El Questro station.

This exciting and stunning area of the East Kimberley was somewhere we had mixed feelings about before we arrived. It's pretty developed, expensive, and famous, and it absolutely blew us away.

Join us as we tackle what has become our favourite hike in Australia!

Road Trip! Kununurra to Broome

Travel with us as we make our way from Kununurra to Broome. We stop at Doon Doon Roadhouse, Leycesters Rest Area, fuel up at Halls Creek and stay the night at Mary Pool free camp. We continue on our journey fuelling up at Fitzroy Crossing and keep driving to Ellendale Rest Stop free camp for the night. The free camps are great! All of the ones we stayed at have drop toilets, dump points and rubbish bins. The only thing you need is water! There is no water - drinking or otherwise - at any of these camps so bring plenty with you. After Ellendale we head to Willare River Roadhouse and pull up stumps to catch up on washing, showers and a few supplies like bread and milk. We take the short drive from Willare to Derby to restock our groceries and check out the famous Derby Jetty. After a swim in the Derby Pool we decide to continue on toward Broome and stop the night at Nillibubica Rest Stop. One more stop at Roebuck Roadhouse, we have a great meal and spend the night at their caravan park as Broome was extremely busy and we could not get in a night early. We hit Cable Beach at Broome and ponder the thought that we have now crossed the entire country from East to West! Until next time...
