Hoysala History:
In 1978 Gerard Fokema, a Dutch Professor visited Karnataka for the first time and documented each and every hoysala temples. Hoysala Era temples are dedicated to Hinduism and Jainism. The Hindu Temples are either dedicated to Lord Shiva or Lord Vishnu. It is very easy to understand which sect a temple belong to. If the name of the temple has suffix Eshvara, then it is a shiva temple. Normally the suffix may be added to the name of the person who built the temple, or the village it is in or the royal dynasty which commissioned it. So when a man named Bucci built a Shiva temple in the Village called Koravangala, it was known as Bucheswara Temple.

Vaishnava temples always on the other hand always bear the name of the Deity the temple is dedicated to. The most common Deities are Keshava or Chennakeshava (Beautiful Keshava), Lakshminarasimha and Lakshminarayana. The prefix Lakshmi indicates that the idol of Narasimha and Narayana are worshiped along with his consort Lakshmi

Architecture of Hoysala Temple:
Hoysala Temples consists of multiple parts which are connected to each other. The simplest temples contain just two parts – a garbhagriha(literally womb house) or small hall which contains the idol, and a large hall outside the shrine, where the devotees gather. Above the shrine is a large tower, known as a “Vimana”. More complex floor plans may consist of a closed hall, an open hall, and a covered porch. A smaller tower on top of the hall, in front of the “Vimana”, is called a “sukanasi” or nose. Temples are usually built on a raised plinth, known as a “jagati”, which provides a path to devotees for circumambulation of the temple, which is an important part of the worship rituals. The interior of the garbhagriha will generally contain 1, 2 or 3 shrines or “Mantapa” and there may be further minor shrines in each corner. The floor plan is always a square, a staggered square, a star, or a permutation and combination of all of them. This gives the exterior of the temple a large number of recesses which are richly decorated with carvings of deities and scenes from Hindu epics and mythology. Hoysala temples are generally made of soapstone.

Lakshmi Narayana Temple - Hosaholalu

Lakshminarayana Temple in Hosaholalu was built by King Vira Someshwara of the Hoysala Empire in 1250 CE. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the temple may not be as famous as the other temples of Karnataka but it is a mystifying place. The beautifully carved sculptures, grand temple interiors, and the overall design of this shrine are the most attractive features.

Built out of Soapstone, Sri Lakshminaryana Temple at Hosaholalu is a splendid example of a trikuta vimana (three shrines) temple though only the central shrine exhibits a tower on top. The lateral shrines are square in construction with five projections and no special features. The temple is built on a jagati (platform) that resembles a star. This platform is raised and has a pillared hall or navaranga in the center and the three shrines around it.

The interior of the temple consists of a closed hall (navaranga) of modest size with four polished lathe-turned pillars supporting the roof. The four central pillars divide the hall into nine equal 'bays' (compartments) and nine decorated ceilings. Each pillar is beautifully carved with sculptures of young dancing girls in various graceful and elegant poses. The main shrine containing the idol of Lakshminarayana and the North and South facing garbhagrihas have the idols of Sri Venu Gopala Swamy and Sri Lakshmi Narasimha respectively.

The base, like all Hoysala temples, has six layers of decorative moldings that comprise of swans, elephants, horse riders, leafy scrolls, various gods and goddesses, and scenes from Hindu epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharatha. The midsection of the temple is richly decorated with sculptures of various Gods, incarnations of Lord Vishnu, dancing Saraswathi, Brahma, Ganapathi, Yoga - Madhava, and many other deities. And, most of the sculptures and images at the Lakshminarayana temple are intact and have been very well preserved.

Hero Worship in AGRAHARA BACHAHALLI

Unique memorials for heroes , immortalising their valour and fierce loyalty.

LOCATION : In the compound of Sri Hunaseshwara Swami Devalaya , in Agrahara Bachahalli , KR Pete Taluk, Mandya District, Karnataka.
6 Kms from KR Pete Town .

THE TEMPLE : A small , simple , 12th Century Hoysala Ekakuta structure without much ornamentation . It was rescued from ruin by locals with help from the State Archeological department. The Lingam and Nandi are originals ; Ganesha and Kumara icons are modern replacements.

THE HERO STONES : The star attraction here is the set of three 15ft tall pillars with finely carved capitals showing the martyrdom of seven generations of heroes from the same family (or clan )that had guarded the Kings from Veeraballala- I to Narasimha -III . Inscriptions identify them as “The Bananju Family of Mugila Sect, from Bacchihalli of Kabbahu Nadu” They had given up their lives, variously, in battle or by gruesome , but deemed honourable, Harakiri (following the Master into Death as the ultimate sign of Loyalty ) . Their official designation was “Garuda Lenkas” .

Eleven illustrative , three-panelled Hero Stones , showing the death and attainment of Heaven of brave men from different times , found in and around the Agrahara, are also lined up within the compound . Some pre-date the temple. Most of them are inscribed . A particularly huge one , with intricately sculpted war scenes , is erected within a sub -shrine called Veerara Gudi or The Shrine of Heroes.
