Top Things To Do and See in Veliko Turnovo, Bulgaria - Travel Bulgaria

Top Things To Do and See in Veliko Turnovo, Bulgaria - Travel Bulgaria

Veliko Turnovo - Unique Holiday Experience in Bulgaria

Veliko Turnovo is situated in central Bulgaria, at the foothills of the Balkan Mountains. It is spread over the historical hills of Tsarevets, Trapezitsa and Sveta Gora, towering over the wide curves of the Iantra river. The city is more than 7000 years old. Veliko Tarnovo impresses with its original renaissance architecture - antique houses, situated one above another, towers, splendid museums, and monasteries with icon-paintings that attract tourists from all over the world. Capital of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom, Turnovo offers some of the most abundant and important cultural and historic attractions in Bulgaria. It also offers lively modern night life and nature with great opportunities for sports and rest.

Veliko Tarnovo has a rich historical past. The first clues for life date back to the 3rd millennium b.c. The first inhabitants were the Thracians and their settlement existed until the end of the Bronze Age. The next inhabitants were the Byzantines. A big Slav settlement was situated here during the VIII a.c. The Old-Bulgarian settlement appeared during the IX c. and during the X c. the hills Tsarevets, Trapezitsa and Sveta Gora were already richly populated. The brothers Asen and Peter organized successfully a revolt against Byzantine rule in 1187 and declared Veliko Tarnovo the capital of Bulgaria. Turnovo became a well-fortified city and a significant political, administrative, economic and cultural center in Europe during the next 200 years. The contemporaries referred to it as the The Second Constantinople and The Third Rome.

The most important remnant of these times is the archaeological preserve Tsarevets, a restored fortress that surrounds the hill Tsarvets. One of the main attractions of the fortress is the Baldwin towers where the Latin Emperor Baldwin was captured and locked during the crusade in the early 1200's. The palace of the Bulgarian tsars was a self-contained fortress with the fabulous Throne Hall and the palace church St. Petka. The Bulgarian patriarchate was situated on the highest place within the fortress. In recent years, the fortress has received further acclaim with a Lights and Sound show - a program that combines sound and light effects to reproduce the history of the old Bulgarian capital.

Venturing beyond the fortress walls, one enters a historical preserved neighborhood with winding narrow cobblestones lined with craft shops, cafes, restaurants and boutique hotels. One can admire the numerous fully renovated Renaissance houses in a typical Bulgarian style, interspersed with ancient ruins and churches. The Gurko street and the ethnographic complex Samovodska Charshia reveal a great variety of Renaissance houses that seem to have landed on top of each other, with sheer views over the Iantra river. The Sarafkina house, built in 1861, is a particularly beautiful sample.

There is much to do around Veliko Turnovo as well including fourteen monasteries built during the Second Bulgarian Kingdom in XII - XIV c. Many of them were destroyed during the Ottoman rule and were renovated by the self-educated Bulgarian architect and builder Kolio Ficheto and wall-painted by Zohari Zograf during XIX c. One of the largest is the Preobrajenski monastery that was founded at the time of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom during XIII - XIV c. by queen Sara, wife of Tsar Ivan Alexander. It had an important role for the spiritual life of the capital. It is situated 6km from Veliko Tarnovo in a beautiful area with vertical rocks in the canyon-like gorge of the Iantra River.

Turnovo has much to offer for people interested in history and architecture but it is also a very vibrant, energetic town with long pedestrian areas, restaurants, shops, and cafes. It is a favorite destination for Bulgarians of all ages and interests as well as international tourists.

Curious? You can look through the following listing of hotels and B&B's: [ Turnovo Holidays. You will not be disappointed.

That is Bulgaria - 36 Kabile Old City - Best places to visit in Bulgaria:

Kabile – old town and archaeological site

The site is located southeast of Bulgaria, in the Yambol region, 4 km north of the village of Kabile.

Antiquity
The oldest traces of habitation go back to the 10th century BC. Ceramic has been found that spawned a period from the 10th to 6th century BC. This indicates that the region was inhabited in the early Iron Age.

Tracians
• Since the 2nd century BC it was inhabited by the Tracians. It was one of the largest and most important Tracian settlements in what was then Tracia.
• In 341 BC. the city was rebuilt by Philip II of Macedon. The city received extra reinforcement and became a metropolis.
• Around 277 BC it came under the control of the Thracian Odrysian Kingdom and was one of the residences of the kings.
• The city was an important trade and military center between the 3rd and 2nd century BC. As a result of an aggressive campaign by Philip V of Macedonia, its activities weakened and it lost its important status.

Romans
• In 71 BC. Marcus Lucullus conquered the city and came into the hands of the Roman Empire. In 45 BC it became part of the Roman province of Thracia. One of the largest Roman fortresses in the region was built here.
• Thermal baths were added between 166 and 169.
• Between 267-269 the city was badly affected by Gothic attacks. The city and fortress was quickly rebuilt and in 293 it regained its status as a city. A new military camp was built, a new fort wall with square towers, a stronger city wall and new thermal baths.
• In the 4th century, Christianity became widespread in the region and a diocese with a large basilica was built.
• Vanaf 378 begonnen de Goten het fort terug aan te vallen. De stad werd uiteindelijk verwoest door de Avaren en werd daarna nog maar gedeeltelijk bewoond.

1ste Bulgarian Empire
In the 9th century, the region was integrated by the Bulgarians who established a small settlement on the old ruins. After the Ottoman Empire's capture in 1018, the city fell into disrepair and desolation.
The site
Take your time, the site is great. This can be seen:
• At the entrance there is an archaeological museum with all the finds on the site. The oldest finds are fossils dating back to 7 million years ago.
• When entering the site, on your right side the baths I. Continue on your right, the east gate.
• At the end you will see parts of the Roman Fort excavated with the thermal baths II, the military camp with barracks, the basilica II, the castle gate, commercial buildings and the wall.
• Starting from the castle gate towards the hill, there is a storage shed on your right, use for storage of the grain supply for the city.
• Take the path to your right that leads up to the panorama platform. On the way up, there is a path on your right side who leads to the west gate.
• From the west gate you return and now walk to the panoramic platform with breathtaking views over the entire site and the surrounding area. To your left the Central Balkan. On the right the city of Yambol.
• Continue the path to the top and you will arrive at a Tracian Shrine from 2000 BC in honor of the Goddess Mother Cybele. In the earliest period of the use of the Sanctuary, clearings were formed in the highest part of the rock crown, oriented in the four cardinal points.
• Back at the entrance there is the great basilica I.

Bulgaria - Zheravna
Zheravna is a village in central eastern Bulgaria, part of Kotel municipality, Sliven Province. The village, set in a small valley at the southern foot of the eastern Balkan Mountains, is an architectural reserve of national importance consisting of more than 200 wooden houses from the Bulgarian National Revival period (18th and 19th century), and a quickly developing tourist destination.
The village emerged between the 12th and 14th century and grew to become a cultural and handicraft centre in the 18th century. As the local population came to wealth, the architectural appearance of the village was shaped by one- or two-storey wooden houses surrounded by stone walls and cobblestone alleys.
