Lake Bohinj, Slovenia | Ribčev Laz | Triglav National Park

Lake Bohinj is nestled in the beautiful nature of the Julian Alps, located within the Triglav National Park. It is the largest Lake in Slovenia, just 30 minutes by car from the much more famous Lake Bled. The Lake is popular as a holiday destination due to its peace and the myriad opportunities for visitors to interact with its pristine surroundings. The perfect destination for relaxing, sunbathing and swimming, but above all for practising any water activity such as fishing, rowing, diving and sailing in a kayak or canoe. The Lake also offers a series of hiking trails, allowing you to explore the entire perimeter of the Lake.
Three villages near Bohinj Lake can be reached by foot. The first village you'll encounter is Ribčev Laz, the gateway to the Lake. German settlers established the village in the 13th century, but it has become a lively place popular amongst tourists. Ribčev Laz is a great starting point to explore Lake Bled and its surroundings, offering a variety of accommodation and dining options. The village has everything you need for your stay – a supermarket, restaurants, post office, atm, and a tourist office. The village's main attraction is the stone-built bridge with the outstanding cultural and historical monument of medieval architecture – the Church of Saint John the Baptist from 12. century.
Lake Bohinj is a stunning location that is easy to love. You will be satisfied if you spend a few hours or days here. This gem of Slovenia and Europe is a true gem, with breathtaking natural beauty and plenty of activities to keep you entertained.

We Spent ONE DAY in LJUBLJANA Slovenia and Discovered Its Hidden Gems!

Join us on an unforgettable day trip from our home in North Italy to the enchanting city of Ljubljana, Slovenia! 🌍 Just a short two-hour drive away, Ljubljana is a hidden gem bursting with charm, history, and culinary delights. In this video, we'll take you through the city's most iconic sights, delicious local foods, and unique experiences that make Ljubljana a must-visit destination. 🎥✨

Exploring the Iconic Sights of Ljubljana 🏰✨

Our adventure began in the heart of Ljubljana, where we were immediately captivated by its vibrant atmosphere and stunning architecture. One of the first stops on our journey was the iconic pink church, officially known as the Franciscan Church of the Annunciation. 🌸 This beautiful Baroque church is a landmark that stands proudly in Prešeren Square, offering a picturesque view of the city center.

Next, we made our way to the majestic Ljubljana Castle, perched atop a hill and offering panoramic views of the city. 🏰 Dating back to the 11th century, the castle is a testament to Ljubljana's rich history and offers fascinating exhibits and a captivating funicular ride to the top. Don't miss the chance to explore its towers and enjoy the breathtaking scenery!

As we strolled through the city, we couldn't resist a visit to the lively Ljubljana Central Market. 🥕🍇 Here, we discovered a vibrant array of fresh produce, local delicacies, and handmade crafts. It's the perfect spot to immerse yourself in the local culture and pick up some unique souvenirs.

Crossing the Dragon Bridge 🐉

No trip to Ljubljana is complete without crossing the iconic Dragon Bridge. This unique bridge is adorned with four dragon statues, symbolizing power, courage, and greatness. Legend has it that when a virgin crosses the bridge, the dragons will wag their tails! 🐉✨ It's a must-see landmark that adds a touch of magic to the city's already enchanting ambiance.

A Taste of Ljubljana: Local Foods and Wine 🍷🍴

One of the highlights of our trip was indulging in the local cuisine. Slovenian food is a delightful blend of Central European flavors, and we couldn't wait to try some traditional dishes. Here are a few must-try foods:

Potica: A delicious rolled pastry filled with various fillings such as walnuts, poppy seeds, or tarragon. It's a traditional Slovenian dessert that pairs perfectly with a cup of coffee. ☕🥧

Kranjska Klobasa: Also known as Carniolan sausage, this flavorful sausage is made from high-quality pork and seasoned with garlic and pepper. It's often served with sauerkraut and mustard. 🌭

Štruklji: Rolled dumplings that can be savory or sweet, filled with ingredients like cottage cheese, walnuts, or apples. They are a versatile and delicious treat. 🥟🍎

We also had the pleasure of sampling some of Slovenia's renowned wines. 🍇🍷 Slovenia boasts three major wine regions, and each produces unique and exquisite wines. We recommend trying a glass of Rebula (a white wine) or Teran (a red wine) to experience the rich flavors of Slovenian viticulture.

Why Ljubljana Should Be on Your Travel List 🌟

Ljubljana is often overlooked in favor of more famous European capitals, but it's truly an underrated destination that deserves more recognition. The city effortlessly combines a rich history with a modern and vibrant lifestyle, making it an ideal spot for travelers seeking an authentic and less crowded experience. 🏙️✨

The city's compact size makes it perfect for a day trip, but don't be surprised if you find yourself wanting to stay longer. With its friendly locals, stunning architecture, and delicious food, Ljubljana offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere that will leave a lasting impression.

Drone Panorama Kostel Castle part 2

About Kostel Castle

The once mighty fortress, strategically placed on a hill above the Kolpo, provided shelter - even from the Turks - to a number of powerful families, from the Counts of Ortenburg to the Langenmantles, for 700 years. The first written mention of the castle is with the German name Graffenwarth and dates from 1336, but interestingly, today the modern local postal code completely matches it.

The castle, demolished in 1809, was partially restored at the end of the 20th century. Valvasor's veduta, published in the Topography of the modern Duchy of Carniola (1679), testifies to the mightiness of the castle complex. Kostel Castle, together with the square inside the walls, is the second largest castle complex in Slovenia and at the same time the only complex on Slovenian soil where people still live inside the former castle walls.

Today, Kostel Castle offers exceptional views of the beautiful valley of the Kolpa River, vast forests and surrounding villages. Many true stories, for example about the deception of the Turks, and legends, e.g. about Mikul's devil, the guides will reveal to you. The castle walls host various exhibitions, in the wonderful atmosphere inside the castle complex at the top of the hill, it is possible to try an escape game or refresh yourself with local delicacies from the castle's picnic cafe. In the summer of 2020, in part of the castle, we arranged the ethnological collection Traces of Time, which brings together around 160 objects and offers an insight into life in the past. A 10-minute film projection about the history of the castle, which is available in 5 different languages, also provides a good insight into the castle's rich and varied past.

For announced groups, it is possible to visit the castle at any time by prior agreement. It is also possible to perform an escape game at Kostel Castle at any time.

Welcome to Kostel Castle.

My Trips: Kočevje, Slovenia

Kočevje (German: Gottschee; Göttscheab or Gətscheab in the local Gottscheerish dialect; Italian: Cocevie) is a city in the Municipality of Kočevje in southern Slovenia. It is the seat of the municipality. Kočevje was attested in written sources in 1363 as Gotsche (and as Gotsew in 1386, Kotsche in 1425, and propre Koczeuiam in 1478). The name is derived from Hvojčevje (from hvoja 'fir, spruce'), referring to the local vegetation. The initial hv- changed to k- under the influence of German phonology. Older discredited explanations include derivation from the hypothetical common noun kočevje 'nomadic settlement' and Slovene koča 'shack'. The former German name was Gottschee.
In 1247 Bertoldo de Merania, Patriarch of Aquileia, granted the area around Ribnica within the Imperial March of Carniola to the Carinthian counts of Ortenburg. When the counts had received further estates in 1336 on the wooded plateau down to Kostel on the Kolpa River from the hands of Patriarch Bertram, they called for German-speaking settlers from Carinthia and Tyrol. In the following decades they established the town of Gottschee, which was first mentioned in a 1363 deed. The settlement received market rights in 1377 and town privileges in 1471.
Until 1918, the town was part of the Austrian Empire (and part of Cisleithania after the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867), in the district of the same name, as one of the 11 Bezirkshauptmannschaften in province of Carniola.
