The monastery is situated in the town of Sergiyev Posad, about 70 km to the north-east from Moscow by the road leading to Yaroslavl, and currently is home to over 300 monks. The monastery was founded in 1337 by one of the most venerated Russian saints, Sergius of Radonezh, who built a wooden church in honour of the Holy Trinity on Makovets Hill. Early development of the monastic community is well documented in contemporary lives of Sergius and his disciples.

The Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov Memorial Museum-Apartment is the real apartment in the residential building at Zagorodny Prospekt, 28, where the composer lived for the last 15 years of his life — from 1893 to 1908 and composed 11 of 15 of his operas — Sadko (1897), The Tale of Tsar Saltan (1900), The Tsar's Bride (1899), Kashchey the Deathless (1902), The Golden Cockerel (1907), Christmas Eve (1895), Mozart and Salieri (1898), The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh and the Maiden Fevroniya (1907), The Noblewoman Vera Sheloga (1898), Servilia (1902), Pan Voyevoda (1903).
In this apartment, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov was making his famous music events known as «Korsakov's Wednesdays». The guests of these Wednesdays were Sergey Rachmaninoff, Alexander Glazunov, Alexander Skryabin, Igor Stravinsky, Fedor Shalyapin, Ilya Repin.
After the death, his wife Nadezhda, sorted out and saved all his drafts, music sheet library, letters, photographs, gifts and family heirloom. In total 505 items. It is became the basement of the expositions of The Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov Museum-Apartment now.
Opened in 1971 as the Museum, the museum is not only telling about the life of one of the greatest Russian composers, but keep the traditions of music nights.
Nikolai Andreyevich Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908) was a Russian composer, and a member of the group of composers known as The Five (aka “Mighty Five”). He was a master of orchestration. His best-known orchestral compositions—Capriccio Espagnol, the Russian Easter Festival Overture, and the symphonic suite Scheherazade — are staples of the classical music repertoire, along with suites and excerpts from some of his 15 operas. Scheherazade is an example of his frequent use of fairy-tale and folk subjects.
