Kollam | Top 5 Tourist Places in Kollam District | Kollam Travel Guide | Kerala | MeeAnveshi
Kollam, formerly known as Quilon, is a district located in the southern region of Kerala, situated 70 km north of the state's capital, Thiruvananthapuram. It is bordered by the Arabian Sea to the west, Tamil Nadu to the east, Alapuzha and Pathanamthitta districts to the north, and Thiruvananthapuram district to the south. With a population of over 2.6 million, Kollam is one of the more densely populated districts in India. The district's capital is Kollam City, which serves as the headquarters for the district administration. Administratively, the district is divided into two revenue divisions, namely Kollam and Punalur, each with three taluks under them.
Similar to the rest of Kerala, Kollam experiences a temperate climate with generally sunny weather peaking in heat during April-May. The monsoon season falls from June to September. The soil in Kollam varies from loamy to laterite and forest in the coastal regions, mainland, and forest areas, respectively.
The heartland of Kollam is naturally veined by the Ashtamudi Lake, a massive, multi-branched water body that is also a popular boating attraction for tourists. This, along with the Kollam canal cutting through the city, gives Kollam a prominent place in the waterway systems of the country. The vast expanse of the lake is beautifully spotted with a number of islands of varying sizes. The city is also graced by beaches where people go to spend quiet evenings. Kollam has a considerably large forest cover on its eastern side, making it home to several eco-tourism projects such as Shenduruni, Thenmala, Palaruvi, etc.
Kollam City prides itself on its extensive history of political, commercial, and cultural significance, as evidenced by numerous accounts from ancient travelers. With a diverse colonial past under the Portuguese, Dutch, and British, Kollam is home to several historically significant sites such as the Thangasseri lighthouse, the St. Thomas Fort and cemetery constructed by the Portuguese, Thevally Palace, and Cheenakkottaram. Additionally, the city boasts numerous old buildings, constructed in various architectural styles by the Travancore kings, who ruled the region prior to India's independence. Many government offices still operate within these structures.
Since the 16th century, Kollam has served as the hub of the cashew industry in Kerala. With hundreds of operational cashew factories in the district, Kollam remains the largest exporter of processed cashews in India. The presence of Neendakara and Thangasseri, two fishing harbors and ports in Kollam, has fostered a thriving marine industry that provides ample employment and livelihood opportunities for a significant number of individuals.

Idukki (ഇടുക്കി; IPA: is one of the 14 districts in the Indian state of Kerala.[5][6] It is the largest district in Kerala and lies amid the Cardamom Hills of Western Ghats in Kerala. Idukki district contains two municipal towns - Kattappana and Thodupuzha, and five taluks.
The district was constituted on 26 January 1972, by taking Peerumade, Udumbanchola, Devikulam taluks of the former High Range division from Kottayam district and the Thodupuzha taluk from Ernakulam district.[7] Its division was previously headquartered at Kottayam city, but moved to Kuyilimala near Painavu and Cheruthoni in June 1976. Malayalam and English are the two official administrative languages in the district.[3] Tamil is the second most spoken language in idukki district after Malayalam[8]
Around 66% of Kerala's power needs come from various Hydroelectric Power Projects in Idukki district.[1] Numerous cash crops and spices are cultivated throughout the district, making it The Spice Garden of Kerala.[1] A significant area in the district is protected as reserved forests and wildlife sanctuaries.[1] The Periyar River is a major river that originates and flows through Idukki. The Pamba River is another important river that originates from Idukki district.
Though it is the largest district in the region in terms of area, it has the lowest population density among the districts of Kerala. There are only two municipalities in the district and the urban population is comparatively much lower than the rural population, due to its mountainous nature. The 2,695 metres (8,842 ft) high peak of Anamudi, which is also the highest point of elevation in India outside the Himalayas, lies in the northern portion of the district of Idukki.[9] The Idukki Dam is one of the highest arch dams in Asia.[10]
Major tourism destination of idukki is munnar.

Topography and elevation of the High Range region and the Cardamom Hills on Kerala
A perfect blend of the Malayali, the Tamil, and various tribal cultures is found in the Idukki district.[11] The temples and other older buildings in the High Range and the surrounding regions in Idukki have significant influences from the medieval era Tamil-Pandyan architectural styles.[11] The mountain passes like Bodinayakkanur (connecting various mountain ranges) and Cumbum (which connects the eastern Tamil country with Thodupuzha) have facilitated trade and travel between the Tamil-Pandyan country which lied to east of the Western Ghats and various Kerala kingdoms west of it during the medieval period.[11] Periyar, the longest river in Kerala, has its source of origin and major portion of its route of flow, in the Idukki district.[11] Pamba, the third-longest river in Kerala, also has its origin in the district of Idukki.[11] During the Travancore Era, Munnar has acted as the summer residence of the British residents in Travancore. Higher peaks like Anamudi on the eastern border of the Idukki district have acted as a natural boundary between the Malayalam kingdoms and the contemporary Tamil kingdoms in the past, thereby reducing invasions into the region from the neighbouring Tamil country as well as from other parts of the Indian peninsula.[11] The 17th century Dutch work, Hortus Malabaricus, contains information about the flora and fauna of the region at that time.

#Tangasseri was associated with the Chinese trade from the first millennium AD and later #colonised by the Portuguese, #Dutch and the British to become the gold village. According to Historians, Captain Rodriguez came to Quilon and was appointed as the captain of the factory and trade, with permission from the queen. St.Thomas Fort (once known as Forte de São Tomé) was built by the Portuguese under Afonso de Albuquerque for the protection of the newly developed trade. In 1505 the Portuguese established a trading port here, and in 1518 established its sovereignty through the construction of Fort St. Thomas. Later in 1661 the town and the fort were handed over to the Dutch who made it the capital of Dutch Malabar. The Dutch occupied the fort for several years. In 1795, the British East India Company took possession of the fort. In 1823 Fort St. Thomas accepted a lease by #Travancore from the British Government for a period of twenty years.[2][3]
Fort St. Thomas was originally around 20 feet (6.1 m) tall. Today, the remains of the fort, popularly known as Tangasseri fort remain facing the beach. The government of India has taken over the fort and it is being considered an historical landmark. Restoration of the fort is ongoing. At present
