Novgorod, also known as novgorod the Great or Veliky Novgorod is one of the oldest and most important historic cities in Russia. The citadel, Kremlin, stands overlooking the Volkhov River. The first settlement days to 989 with the arrival of the first bishop of Novgorod, Ioakim Korsunianin, who built the Cathedral of the Holy Wisdom.
The first reference of the fortification on the site dates to 1044, with additional construction taking place in 1116. These were probably earthen embankments topped by a wooden palisade, replaced by stone towers and walls in 1302.
The current fortress was built between 1484 and 1490 by Muscovite builders in the wake of Grand Prince Ivan III's conquest of the city in 1478.....

Новгородский Кремль (Детинец) – один из древнейших памятников военно-оборонительного зодчества России XV-XVII вв. Общая площадь крепости внутри стен – 12, 1 га. Глубокий ров окружает его с севера, запада и юга. Крепостные стены, стоящие на валу, имеют протяженность 1487 м, высоту от 8 до 15 м, толщину от 3, 6 до 6, 5 м. Из двенадцати башен, которые имелись в Детинце XV в., сохранилось девять: Дворцовая, Спасская, Княжая, Кокуй, Покровская, Златоустовская, Митрополичья, Федоровская и Владимирская.
