கொடுமுடி மகுடலிங்கர் கோவில் ஆதிசேஷனுக்கும் வாயுபகவானுக்கும் தங்களில் யார் வலிமையானவர் என்ற போட்டி ஏற்பட்டது. இந்த போட்டியால் மேரு மலையின் சிகரங்களும் அதில் இருந்த ரத்தினங்களும் பல இடங்களில் தெறித்து விழுந்தன. அதில் வைரம் விழுந்த இடம் கொடுமுடி எனப்பட்டது. கொங்கு நாட்டு ஏழு தலங்களில் ஒன்று. மூலவர் சுயம்புவாக மகுட லிங்கேஸ்வரர் என்ற பெயரில் கிழக்கு நோக்கி அமர்ந்துள்ளார். அம்பாள் வடிவுடை நாயகி. தலமரம் வன்னிமரம். இங்கு பிரம்மாவே வன்னி மரத்தின் வடிவில் உள்ளார். இந்த வன்னி மரத்தில் முள்,பூ, காய் முதலியன இல்லை. பெருமாள் வீரநாராயணர் என்ற பெயரில் பள்ளி கொண்ட கோலத்தில் உள்ளார். பரத்வாஜ முனிவருக்கு சிவபெருமான் சித்திர நடனக் காட்சி அளித்த தலம். மலையத்துவச பாண்டியனின் மகன் விரல்கள் இல்லாமல் பிறந்தான். இங்கு வழிபட்ட பிறகு விரல்கள் வளர்ந்ததால் பாண்டியன் மகிழ்ந்து ஆலயத்திற்கு திருப்பணிகள் செய்து நகரை விரிவுபடுத்தி மடமும் மண்டபங்களும் அமைத்து பெரிய தேர் ஒன்றையும் செய்து கொடுத்தார். தினசரி பூஜை செலவுகளுக்கு கிராமங்களையும் தானமாக கொடுத்தார். இதனாலேயே திருப்பாண்டி கொடுமுடி எனப்படுகிறது. தேவ தீர்த்தம், பிரம்ம தீர்த்தம்,பரத்வாஜ தீர்த்தம்,காவிரி தீர்த்தம் என 4 தீர்த்தங்கள் உள்ளன.
