Places to see in ( Doncaster - UK )

Doncaster, is a large market town in South Yorkshire, England. Together with its surrounding suburbs and settlements, the town forms part of the Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster . The Doncaster skyline is dominated by the minster in the middle of the town. The Frenchgate Shopping Centre holds an important position in the skyline, along with the Doncaster College Hub building and Cusworth Hall. Cusworth Hall is an 18th-century Grade I listed country house in Cusworth, near Doncaster. Set in the landscaped parklands of Cusworth Park, Cusworth Hall is a good example of a Georgian country house.

Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, Doncaster is about 20 miles (30 km) from Sheffield, with which it is served jointly by an international airport, Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield in Finningley. The Doncaster Urban Area includes Doncaster and the neighbouring small village of Bentley as well as some other villages.

Doncaster sits on the European Route E15 and is the starting point of European Route E13. The E13 connects Doncaster, Sheffield, Nottingham to London. Doncaster is a European hub with a new international airport, Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield opened in 2005. Doncaster International Railport facilities link to the Channel Tunnel.

From around the 16th century, Doncaster embraced the wealthy stagecoach trade. This led to horse breeding in Doncaster, which in turn led to the start of horseraces there. Recent leisure developments include a new community sports stadium for sports teams including the towns men's football club, Doncaster Rovers F.C.

KIRK BRAMWITH: Doncaster Parish #31 of 43

We're not quite finished with the Northern section of Doncaster just yet, and this one's the last one in the combined area of the Moss and District Parish Council area. Whilst Fenwick had the area's only pub, this one has the area's only church, and it' is quite some structure, being an old Norman Church dating from 1120.

Perhaps the standout feature of the church lies inside, and as ever due to Covid, I still have to get inside one, but this one would have been one of the ones I would have liked to have done so at, with the temptation to try to find all 27 mice...you'll have to watch the video to find out what that means! There's also a bell in the tower, all on it's lonesome, which is the oldest bell in the Diocese of Sheffield.

Google Maps reckons you can walk from the main village to the other village in the parish and back in 26 minutes, which I put to the test in this video. Was Google Maps accurate? Normally I would say not 100%, but on this occasion it would seem to be right. A nice walk down the country lanes there and back is punctuated only by the New Junction Canal.

Speaking of the canal, we see it not once but twice here, crossing both a lift bridge like the one in Sykehouse, and a swing bridge, where the road literally rotates. All of this is the backdrop to a pretty pair of villages, one slightly bigger than the other, bit with a combined population of 320 people.

Welcome to the very small, lovely little parish of KIRK BRAMWITH.

DONCASTER ROUND-UP

Hello DONCASTER people!

It's been a while I know, but finally the DONCASTER ROUND-UP video is here!

Using information that's been sent to me by all you lovely people out there, this is the video that catches all those comments and anecdotes and whatever else you wanted me to talk about, that I either missed or got wrong in the 43 parishes of DONCASTER!

In alphabetical order, I go through the borough, detailing anything and everything you guys wanted me to! I love putting your areas on display and I've enjoyed every single one of the Doncaster parishes, they're all unique in their own way!

It's taken me six months to get through the entire district. It is such a varied part of the country, taking in things like coal mines, open farmland, waterways, some amazing buildings, some excellent nuggets of history and above all some awesome people! Thank you for letting me put your areas on display, and making Doncaster stand out!

Cheers all, enjoy the round up and I'll see you down the road.

KIRK SMEATON: Selby Parish #9 of 74

Welcome back to Selby! In today's episode we will be looking at the first of two villages which face each other across the River Went and in fact these villages are so close together I was even able to park the car in one walk to the other and walk back without even breaking sweat!

Whilst one village has all the amenities including a pub, the post office and a church the other one is home to the Brockadale nature reserve which will be seeing in that video when it comes out in a few days time. For starters though here this is the larger of the two villages in question.

You have to admire the humour of the locals when you read the sign on the Shoulder of Mutton which is the local pub! There are plenty of floral displays around the village, it's pretty and this is certainly one of Selby's best kept secrets. The presence of Water Mill Farm indicates there was maybe a watermill here on the River Went but that's something that you locals can help me out with

This is the most Southerly village in North Yorkshire and as well as being the Southern boundary of the ancient Celtic kingdom of Elmet. This is home to a largely British and retired population.

Welcome to KIRK SMEATON.

Kirk Sandall Station 13/5/19

We head up to Yorkshire again to cover some more stations which are served by the Pacer Bus units. These units are now entering their last few months in service and as such we are doing a lot of revisits to get as much footage of these iconic units as possible. These are the individual station videos for the two day trip,

Sandall Beat Wood, Walk, Doncaster, October 2020

Another of my random Doncaster walks, this time a longish walk around Sandall Beat Wood. No music this time, just the wind and my breathing!

I first went up the old pit top (formerly Markham Main colliery), then through the woods, on out to the fields behind Old Cantley, then back through Cantley Park before back up the old pit top once more. A very rainy and blustery walk to begin with, and a bit blurry and wobbly onscreen, but there's only so much you can do with an iPhone while on the move.

A visit to Conisbrough Castle

A visit to Conisbrough Castle, operated by English Heritage and a short distance outside of Doncaster in South Yorkshire. A lovely day, slightly overcast but no rain. Pre-booking due to COVID 19 was still required but the staff are helpful and if numbers are low in the castle they let you in early. More of a walk around video we see views from the old castle walls and from all levels of the keap. Views from the now upper area are amazing.

We noted several CL sites very close to the town but need to investigate exact locations. We had been interested to learn that an episode of Most Haunted was made in the castle, didn't find that out until we left!

SCROOBY: Bassetlaw Parish #12 of 66

If you thought Austerfield was the only place that the Pilgrim Fathers story has connections to in this part of the world, well think again. There's quote a few of them around the South Yorkshire/Bassetlaw border area and today's parish is perhaps the one with the most history connected to the Mayflower's journey some 400 years ago.

That's because William Brewster, one of the separatists, lived here in the Manor House, which now is owned by the Dunstans, and is currently being restored to it's former glory. The Pilgrim tale is etched all over this village, from the information boards, to the names of the properties, to the apple tree that's been planted in the centre. You cannot escape it.

I do try though in this video to show that the village isn't all about the Pilgrim Fathers;. Take for example the watermill (Monks Mill), with it's lovely pond and attractive exterior, or the park and the village hall both of which have much bigger roles in the community than just informing passers by of the history.

In fact, if you go a little further afield within the parish boundaries you encounter some much more gruesome history with the story of John Spencer, and a nice woodland burial ground designed to make remembering our loved ones that little more manageable for the living.

All in all you're not going to escape the history like the separatists did, but there's a lot more to see in the parish of SCROOBY.
