Sverdlovsk (Ekaterinburg) 1970, USSR - Nostalgia

Sverdlovsk (modern day Ekaterinburg) is a city in Russia located in the Ural Mountains region. It is the administrative center of Sverdlovsk Oblast and has a population of over 1.4 million people, making it the fourth-largest city in Russia.

Sverdlovsk has a rich history, with evidence of human settlements in the area dating back to the Stone Age. In the 18th century, the city was a center of the Russian metal industry, and in the 19th century, it became an important transportation hub, connecting Russia's European and Asian territories.

During World War II, Sverdlovsk played an important role as a center for manufacturing military equipment, and many of the city's factories were moved eastward to avoid German bombing. After the war, Sverdlovsk became an important center for the Soviet Union's nuclear industry, with several secret nuclear research facilities located in the region.

In 1960, Sverdlovsk gained international notoriety when a mysterious outbreak of anthrax occurred in the city, killing at least 64 people. The incident, which was covered up by Soviet authorities at the time, is now known as the Sverdlovsk anthrax leak.

Life in Sverdlovsk in 1970 was characterized by the Soviet government's emphasis on industrialization, urbanization, and centralized planning. The city was a major industrial center, with factories producing a variety of goods such as machinery, steel, and chemicals. Many of these factories were built during the Soviet era and were often state-owned and operated.

The standard of living for most people in Sverdlovsk in 1970 was relatively high compared to other parts of the Soviet Union. However, this came at the expense of personal freedoms, as the Soviet government heavily regulated all aspects of life. The government controlled housing, healthcare, education, and employment, and citizens were required to conform to the state's ideology and way of life.

In terms of social life, there were various cultural institutions such as theaters, museums, and cinemas. However, access to these institutions was often limited, as tickets and memberships were allocated based on government quotas.

The city was also home to a number of universities and research institutes, which provided educational opportunities for students and professionals. However, the curriculum and research priorities at these institutions were often determined by the state, which placed a heavy emphasis on science and technology.

Overall, life in Sverdlovsk in 1970 was characterized by a mix of industrialization, centralized planning, and limited personal freedoms, which were common features of life in the Soviet Union at the time.

Today, Sverdlovsk is a major industrial and cultural center, with a diverse economy that includes manufacturing, mining, and finance. The city is also home to several universities and research institutes, as well as museums and theaters that celebrate the region's rich history and cultural heritage.

Vologda Region

The Vologda Region, in the north-west of Russia, is a land of forests and lakes. Since the old days it's been one of Russia's hidden places. The Moscow Tsar used to keep the treasury of the Russian state here. Monks and icon painters used to go to Lake Beloye to keep faith with their traditions. Pilgrims from all over the world come to Vologda and Goritsy, to honour Cyril and Therapont, to experience peace of mind and to seek truth and wisdom.
The people of Vologda maintain the customs and traditions of the Russian north. Every summer different generations gather here to preserve these time-honoured rites.
However, in the north winters are long and occupied with lengthy hunting trips and adventures.
Father Frost, the Russian Santa Claus, welcomes children and adults alike to his Vologda mansion.

At least two polar bear dens were found, and researchers took tissue samples and measurements from one adult male bear.
Several species of birds were recorded for the first time in the park. Scientists updated information on the birds species composition and abundance of seabird rookeries on Gemskerk Island.
