The Kbely Aviation Museum is the largest aviation museum in the Czech Republic and is one of the most important museums of its kind in Europe . It is located in the area of the historic Prague-Kbely military airport , which was the first air base built after the creation of Czechoslovakia in 1918 . Another exhibition is located in the nearby Stará Aerovka complex. The museum has 275 aircraft in its collections , of which 85 are displayed in six covered halls, 25 in uncovered exhibition spaces, 155 are stored in depositories and 10 airworthy ones are in operation. [1] It has a total of 2,251 collection items related to aviation, cosmonautics , parachuting and meteorology . The exposition of the museum relates mainly to the history of Czechoslovak and Czech aviation, especially military. A number of exhibited airplanes belong to the world's uniques . The museum is accessible for free in the season from May to October. [2]
History of the museum In the mid-60s of the 20th century, a lively discussion broke out among the professional aviation public about the need to establish a specialized aviation museum that would map the development of Czechoslovak aviation. Until now, aviation collections were concentrated only in the National Technical Museum in Prague and the Technical Museum in Brno , but here it was not their only collection-making activity and it actually only replaced the function of the aviation museum. Space was also given to this topic by the magazine Letectví a kosmonautika , where in 1965 a number of considerations and challenges were published, including the rescue of veteran aircraft, which at that time were located in various places in Czechoslovakia, mostly in poor technical condition.
As a reaction to this movement, the Aviation Historical Society was established at NTM, which set itself the goal of systematic collection of aviation memorabilia, their processing and renovation of three-dimensional exhibits. Another powerful impulse was a poll on aviation history, organized by the magazine Letectví a kosmonautika in 1966 . In it, interested personalities expressed their views on the creation of the aviation museum, including the then head of the VHÚ Military Museum, Lieutenant Colonel J. Šáda.
Gradually, the idea of establishing an aviation exhibition at the Military Museum of the VHÚ matured under the leadership of then Major Engineer Jaroslav Janečka , who had been intensely interested in the mentioned issue for a long time. Thanks to the understanding of the command of the Air Force , specifically its commander General Josef Vosáhl, workers for the Air Force Group of the Military Museum were allocated from the state of the Military Research Institute VÚ 031. [3]
Birth in Kbely Despite some proposals (such as the Brussels Pavilion at the Prague Exhibition Center ), the burning problem of the space where the collections should be concentrated was solved by allocating a part of hangar No. 40 at the airport in Kbely . It is a hangar in which the largest part of the exhibition is installed today. Three-dimensional exhibits from the military air force, various museums and aero clubs began to be concentrated here, and already in September 1967 the first improvised aircraft exhibition was opened. In view of the approaching anniversary of the establishment of the Czechoslovak state in 1968, interested Ing. Jaroslav Janečka the widest aviation public, so that it is possible to build a truly worthy aviation exhibition. Aircraft manufacturing companies, ČSA, ČslA, aero clubs and, last but not least, military repair plants were supposed to take part in it.
A coordinating exhibition committee was set up, which was also supposed to organize a large aviation day at the airport in Kbely . Meanwhile, the entire hangar No. 40 was already available for exhibition. This successfully developing effort was interrupted by the events after August 21, 1968, when the Republic was occupied by the troops of the Warsaw Pact states .
These facts had a negative impact on the construction of the air show. For example, the long-awaited aviation day was completely canceled and the opening date of the exhibition was postponed. Despite all the negatives, the exhibition was inaugurated on October 11, 1968 and was a huge success. 62 aircraft were exhibited, two-thirds of which were already in the collections of the Military Museum. Top best and unusual things to see in PRAGUE – Czech Republic
Prague has so many interesting attractions, I could only visit a select number of sights during my three-day stay. Sights you must not miss are the Astronomical Clock at Old Town Square, the famous Charles Bridge, Prague Castle and the hidden alchemy lab Speculum Alchemiae. Petřín Hill offers stunning views over the city and for those who like art, pay Reon Argondian’s Magical Cavern at the hill a visit. The city also has many cool museums (which I will definitely visit next time!), such as the Museum of communism, the Kbely Aviator Museum and the National Technical Museum.

Malá Strana (Lesser Town) is a district of Prague and one of its most historic neighborhoods. It is on the left (west) bank of the Vltava River, on the slopes just below Prague Castle. The name distinguishes it from the more prominent districts of Prague on the right bank, with which it is linked by the Charles Bridge. Initially, when it was founded in 1257, the district was called the New Town beneath Prague Castle (Czech: Nové Město pod Pražským Hradem). When Charles IV founded the New Town of Prague in 1348, Malá Strana was renamed the Lesser Town of Prague (Czech: Menší Město pražské). In the 17th century, the unofficial name Little Quarter (Czech: Malá Strana) was used.[iew of Malá Strana from St. Nicholas Church In 1419-1420 the Malá Strana was burnt down by Hussites. In 1541 the town was strongly damaged by a fire that killed fifty people. After this fire, the city was rebuilt in the Renaissance style, and many palaces of nobility were built there.
The Vltava is the longest river in the Czech Republic, running southeast along the Bohemian Forest and then north across Bohemia, through Český Krumlov, České Budějovice, and Prague, and finally merging with the Elbe at Mělník. It is commonly referred to as the Czech national river. The Vltava River is 430.3 kilometers (267.4 mi) long and drains an area of 28,090 square kilometers (10,850 sq mi) in size, over half of Bohemia and about a third of the Czech Republic's entire territory. The river is crossed by 18 bridges (including the Charles Bridge) and covers 31 kilometers (19 mi) within the city as it runs through Prague. The water from the river was used for drinking until 1912 when the Vinohrady Water Tower ceased pumping. It is, however, the source of drinking water in case of failures or repairs to the water supply from the Želivka and Kárané sources. The Podolí water processing plant is on standby for such issues with the long section of the river upstream of the Podolí plant under the stricter, second-degree pollution prevention regulations. The height difference from source to mouth is about 1,016 meters (3,333 ft), and the most significant stream at the source is named Černý Potok (Black Brook) or Teplá Vltava (Warm Vltava). The Vltava originates from a confluence of two streams, the Warm Vltava (Teplá Vltava), which is longer, and the Cold Vltava (Studená Vltava), sourced in Bavaria. The Vltava receives tributaries along its course, Otava and Berounka on the left and Lužnice and Sázava on the right side.
Charles Bridge (Karlův most) is a medieval stone arch bridge that crosses the Vltava River in Prague, Czech Republic. Its construction started in 1357 under the auspices of King Charles IV and finished in the early 15th century. The bridge replaced the old Judith Bridge built in 1158–1172, which a flood severely damaged in 1342. This new bridge was initially called Stone Bridge (Kamenný most) or Prague Bridge (Pražský most) but has been referred to as Charles Bridge since 1870. The bridge is 516 meters (1,693 ft) long and nearly 10 meters (33 ft) wide. Following the example of the Stone Bridge in Regensburg, it was built as a bow bridge with 16 arches shielded by ice guards. It is protected by three bridge towers, two on the Lesser Quarter side (including the Malá Strana Bridge Tower) and one on the Old Town side, the Old Town Bridge Tower. The bridge is decorated by a continuous alley of 30 statues and statuaries, mostly baroque-style, originally erected around 1700, but now all have been replaced by replicas. Charles Bridge has suffered several disasters and witnessed many historical events. Czech legend has it that construction began on Charles Bridge at 5:31 am on 9 July 1357, with the first stone being laid by Charles IV himself. This time was crucial to the Holy Roman Emperor because he firmly believed in numerology and felt that this specific time, which formed a palindrome (1357 9/7 5:31), was a numerical bridge and would imbue Charles Bridge with additional strength. The bridge was completed 45 years later, in 1402.

The Prague exploration continues, hitting the hot spots like Prague Castle at sunset and trying some traditional food. I decided to hit the town myself the next day and tasted some local street food, and dove deep into the Jewish Quarter and its multiple synagogues and jewish cemetery. It was a beautiful exploration although very heavy. The audio ticket offered me great insight into the history of the jewish community in Prague, highly recommend. We then met back up as a group and headed to the Royal Theatre for a performance of Beauty and the Beast that we had gotten for 7€ as a means to see the theatre on a budget, which was amazing, the theatre play was however confusing, in Czech and really scary, but such a good experience none the less. Our last day we spent on the slopes, I had organised a day trip all included to the snow so we could ski and so that Stuart could learn to ski. He did amazingly with us amateurs as his coaches, and we had an amazing day and evening playing in the snow. We then headed back in Britt's Fiat 500 all the way to the Netherlands, singing our hearts out to our favourite tunes along the way.
