Kabupaten Buton adalah salah satu Daerah Tingkat II di provinsi Sulawesi Tenggara, Indonesia. Kabupaten Buton terletak di Pulau Buton yang merupakan pulau terbesar di luar pulau induk Kepulauan Sulawesi, yang menjadikannya pulau ke-130 terbesar di dunia. Ibu kota kabupaten ini terletak di Pasarwajo. Kabupaten ini memiliki luas wilayah 1.213,00 km² dan pada tahun 2020 berpenduduk sebanyak 119.185 jiwa.[1] Kabupaten Buton terkenal sebagai penghasil aspal terbesar di Indonesia.
Nama Buton berasal dari nama sejenis pohon, yaitu pohon butun (Barringtonia asiatica). Pohon butun tumbuh secara bebas di kawasan pelabuhan, pelayaran dan perdagangan yang berada di pesisir selatan Pulau Buton. Pohon butun banyak digunakan oleh masyarakat Buton pada tradisi membuat upacara yang dikenal sebagai kaepeta. Masyarakat setempat menggunakan daun pohon butun sebagai pengganti piring untuk makan dalam upacara tersebut. Daun pohon butun digunakan pula sebagai bahan dasar membuat ketupat yang seukuran buah butun oleh masyarakat setempat. Penamaan Buton merupakan penyerapan bahasa Melayu dari kosakata butun. Sumber-sumber historiografi lokal Buton mendukung asal-usul nama Buton dengan menyatakan bahwa Kerajaan Buton didirikan oleh empat orang imigran yang berasal dari kawasan Johor yang merupakan wilayah suku Melayu.
