KALMAR SWEDEN SVENSKA 2022 4K TRIP FROM KOPINGSVIK TO KALMAR VIA BRIDGE
Trip to Kalmar from Köpingsvik on the island of Öland, Sweden. And back by bus. Recorded on April 24. at around 10 degrees Celsius with a very cold wind. Instead of the noise of the wind.
Kalmar (/ˈkælmɑːr/, US also /ˈkɑːlmɑːr/, Swedish: [ˈkǎlmar] is a city in the southeast of Sweden, situated by the Baltic Sea. It had 36,392 inhabitants in 2010 and is the seat of Kalmar Municipality. It is also the capital of Kalmar County, which comprises 12 municipalities with a total of 236,399 inhabitants (2015). Kalmar is the third largest urban area in the province and cultural region of Småland.
From the thirteenth to the seventeenth centuries, Kalmar was one of Sweden's most important cities. Between 1602 and 1913 it was the episcopal see of the Kalmar Diocese, with a bishop, and the Kalmar Cathedral from 1702 is an example of classicistic architecture. It became a fortified city, with the Kalmar Castle as the center. After the Treaty of Roskilde in 1658, Kalmar's importance diminished, until the industry sector was initiated in the 19th century. The city is home to parts of Linnaeus University.
The city plays host to the Live at Heart festival, one of Sweden’s largest musical showcase events.
Kalmar is adjacent to the main route to the island of Öland over the Öland Bridge.

10 Best Castles In Sweden To VisitHistorical Side Of Sweden
this video is about 10 famous castles of sweden you must visit when on tour of sweden
From a country that has so many legendary kings (I’m shouting out the mythical Beowulf here), there are not quite as many castles as you’d imagine. That being said, the best castles in Sweden are pretty epic, even if they’re not in a huge abundance like some other European countries.
Though let’s be honest, there are still hundreds to see across the country.
Now, I’ve got to be honest, when I first think of Sweden, I think of its pretty little towns, the most beautiful places, its amazing Ice Hotel and, of course, Stockholm. But, there is so much more to Sweden, too.
This is especially true when it comes to the best castles in Sweden that are dotted all across the country.
Depending on what area of Sweden you visit, you’ll likely find at least one castle in the local area. This makes it totally easy to pop into one whilst on a wider trip of the country, too.
1.) Lacko Castle
Perched on the island of Kållandsö, Lacko Castle is one of the best castles in Sweden to visit if you’re looking for a day trip from Gothenburg. As it’s around a 2-hour drive, Lacko Castle is pretty easy to visit if you’re already heading inland and a great pitstop as you head further east.
The castle itself is super old and pretty incredible to see. Plus, the gardens are something else, too.
2) Skokloster Castle
Arguably one of the most beautiful Baroque castles in all of Europe, Skokloster Castle is nestled on the banks of Mälaren’s shores and dates al the way back from the 17th century (which is still young in castle years).
3) Drottningholm Palace
Dating from the 17th century, Drottningholm Palace is one (yes, one!) of the official residences of the Swedish royal family and is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site that we totally loved visiting.
Heavily influenced by French architecture, it’s one place you can spot a little bit of France in a Nordic country. Don’t forget to keep your eyes peeled some quirky additions too like its Chinese Pavilion and the Baroque garden.
4) Gripsholm Castle
Nestled on the banks of Lake Mälaren, Gripsholm Castle is known for its sweeping garden that spans for days!
Oh, and don’t forget to keep a lookout for a deer (or 500) that roam this area. If you’re heading inside, expect lots of smug mug oil paintings adorning the walls.
5) The Royal Palace
Remember, I did say the Swedish royal family had more than one palace? 😉
As the name suggests, this is the official residence of the King of Sweden and is famous for having over 600 rooms. You can’t miss it!
This colossus palace is also home to five museums on site for us all to enjoy and full of antiques that date back many hundreds of years
6) Malmö Castle
In the south of Sweden, Malmö Castle was built in the 16th century and originally belonged to the Danish (shhh, don’t tell them, they’ll want it back).
Now part of Sweden, the castle was feared in days gone by as a place to imprison criminals, similar to the Tower of London in the UK or more recently Alcatraz in San Francisco.
7) Rosendal Palace
Another (yes, another) royal residence, Rosendal Palace sits on its own island of Djurgården and is known for its Swedish Empire style of design.
Inside the palace, you will find a pretty epic range of period pieces including furniture and plush textiles from all over the world.
8) Örebro Castle
Located on the Svartån River, the Örebro Castle was built to keep a watchful eye out for contraband (such as liquor and gold) and see if it was being passed along the river.
In recent times, they no longer watch out for the liquor and the castle has been opened to us all to enjoy its concerts that take place throughout the year.
9) Kalmar Castle
It is one of the lesser-known castles in Sweden but is well worth a visit if you want to get off the beaten track and see one of the area’s oldest historic buildings.
10.) Marsvinsholm Castle
A long time ago, Marsvinsholm Castle in Southern Sweden was part of (modern-day) Denmark and built for the Royal family (still surprised that Denmark hasn’t asked for it back yet).
The castle itself has been restored quite a few times and now stands proud for us all to enjoy and it’s easily one of the best castles in Sweden to explore.

This video will show you different places in Kalmar, so you might want to watch it till the end.
It starts with a little bit of the area close to the harbor. After that part we move on to the lovely park called City Park or Stadsparken in Swedish, that is next to Kalmar Castle, before we walk over to Kalmar Castle. From Kalmar Castle there is a little bit about the Old Town and finally from the oldest cemetery in Kalmar were both pirates and rich people are buried. All these places are within walking distance from each other.
The History of Kalmar Castle:
Around 1180 a defense tower was built on the site where Kalmar Castle now stands. The intention was to protect the area from attacks by pirates and other enemies. By the beginning of the 1200s, Kalmar was established as a city.
During the reign of King Magnus Barnlock, additional towers and a ring wall were built on the site. The Guard Tower to west contained the original main entrance. At the time the fortress was the most advanced of its kind in Sweden.
For a long period the castle was a powerful defensive compound, primarily through its strategically important location. The Swedish-Danish border was not far to the south. Scania, Blekinge and Halland were Danish territories until 1658.
The Kalmar Union:
Arguably, the most significant political event in Kalmar during the Middle Ages was the formation of the Kalmar Union in 1397 in which Sweden, Norway and Denmark were members. Queen Margareta was the mastermind behind the union which unified the countries, through a common monarch and common foreign policy. The union also worked as a counterweight to the German Hanseatic League. With the coronation of Gustav Vasa in Sweden in 1523, the union was formally dissolved.
The Vasa kings:
During the time of the Vasa kings Gustav I, Erik XIV and Johan III, the castle was redesigned into the building it is today. During the 16th century the medieval fortress was made into a Renaissance palace after European fashion. Both Erik XIV and Johan III hired artists and carpenters from Europe to modernize the castle architecture and decorations, according to the preferences of the day. In the King's Chamber one finds one of the oldest preserved pictures of the castle, in intarsia, placed on the door that leads to the privy and the secret passage through which one could escape to other sections of the castle. In the Golden Hall one finds an entirely unique gilded ceiling.
The Kalmar War:
During the Kalmar War, the governor Krister Some gave up the castle to the Danes on 3 August 1611. He was branded a traitor and according to tradition his face is the one engraved on the staircase before the eastern section of the castle. The Danes held the castle until 1613. After the Treaty of Roskilde in 1658, the castle was no longer needed to protect the old border and it lost its strategical location. Thus it was no longer needed for military defense. Royal visits became increasingly rare and the grand halls were used for other purposes. There were prison cells and even a distillery.
A vibrant castle:
Kalmar Castle is a symbol for Kalmar. The castle's history features international politics, court intrigues, fiery sieges and fierce battles. Today the castle is vibrant and lively place where many people visit.
In the City Park or Stadsparken in Swedish, one can also find Kalmar Art Gallery or Kalmar konstmuseum as it’s called in Swedish.

Kalmar Castle - Kalmar Slott - Kalmar Sweden
Kalmar Castle – Kalmar Slott _Kalmar Sweden.
Today we will visit the beautiful and fantastic Kalmar Castle (Swedish: Kalmar slot), in Kalmar, Kalmar län, Sweden. It was a beautiful spring day. I would like to point out that all drone footage was filmed according to the Swedish restricted airspace regulations and with the permission of the air traffic control at Kalmar Airport, since the whole area is a controlled and restricted airspace. Towards the end of the video, I have included some photos of what it looks like inside the castle.
-------------
Let’s talk a little bit about the history of Kalmar Castle.
Around 1180 a round defensive tower was built at Kalmarsund and a harbor constructed on the site where Kalmar Castle now stands. The tower’s purpose was to protect the area from attacks by pirates and other enemies. By the beginning of the 1200s, Kalmar was established as a city.
At the end of the thirteenth century King Magnus Ladulås had a new fortress built with a curtain wall, round corner towers and two square gatehouses surrounding the original tower. Located near the site of Kalmar's medieval harbor, it has played a crucial part in Swedish history since its initial construction as a fortified tower in the 12th century.
One of the most significant political events in Scandinavia took place at Kalmar Castle in 1397, when the Kalmar Union was formed - a union of Denmark, Norway and Sweden (including Finland), organized by Queen Margaret I of Denmark. The union also worked as a counterweight to the German Hanseatic League. With the coronation of Gustav Vasa in Sweden in 1523, the union was formally dissolved. During the Swedish rebellion against Denmark in 1520, the fortress was commanded by Anna Eriksdotter (Bielke), who at the death of her spouse, Johan Månsson (Natt och Dag), in the middle of the rebellion against Denmark in 1520, took control over his fiefs and defended Kalmar against Denmark.
In the 16th century Kalmar Castle was expanded and renovated under the direction of King Gustav I and in the hands of his sons King Erik XIV and King Johan III, monarchs of the House of Vasa, giving it a Renaissance feel fit for a king, the feel it still has today. Both Erik XIV and Johan III hired artists and carpenters from Europe to modernise the castle architecture and decorations.
During the Kalmar War 1611-1613, governor Krister Some gave up the castle to the Danes on 3 August 1611. He was branded a traitor and according to tradition, his face is the one engraved on the staircase before the eastern section of the castle. The Danes held the castle until 1613. After the Treaty of Roskilde in 1658, the castle was no longer needed to protect the old border and it lost its strategic location. It was therefore no longer needed for military defense. Royal visits became increasingly rare and the grand halls were used for other purposes. There were prison cells and even a distillery. During the Kalmar war the Kalmar Castle suffered heavy damage and was badly damaged by a fire in 1642.
Repairs had begun but from the end of the seventeenth century the castle was allowed to fall into disrepair.
