Počet obyvatel ve městě se pohybuje kolem 50 tisíc a rozloha činí 59,10 km². Je významným lázeňským střediskem se známým sklářským a potravinářským průmyslem. Je to nejnavštěvovanější lázeňské město v Česku. Přibližně kolem roku 1350 uspořádal císař Karel IV. při svém pobytu v Lokti výpravu do loketských lesů, kde nechal na místě údajného pramene založit lázně nazvané Horké Lázně u Lokte, které byly později přejmenované na Karlovy Vary. Následně dne 14. srpna 1370 Karel IV. udělil lázním městská práva stejná jako v Lokti. V roce 1522 vychází první odborná kniha o Karlových Varech a jejich léčebných vlastnostech od lékaře Václava Payera, jež je vydána v Lipsku. O 60 let později zasahuje město velká povodeň a v roce 1604 pak katastrofální požár, která zcela poničí město (podobná událost se přihodí i roku 1759). 1775 Johann Georg Pupp položil základ rozvoji hotelu Grandhotel Pupp. Filmed Sep 2009

Kadan city, Czech republic Kadaň (German: Kaaden), is a city in the Ústí nad Labem Region of the Czech Republic. The city lies on the banks of the river Ohře. Exploring the coal region in the west of the Czech Republic
There is a number of massive open-pit brown coal mines in the western part of the Czech Republic. In this video, I drive to a town called Kadaň, from which I take a bicycle ride around a massive quarry Nástup-Tušimice and take a close look at the coal-fired power station at Prunéřov. The pit is so huge that many towns have been wiped out to make way for coal mining. Today, most of the area is being recultivated. The forests are being planted, and a large area is being used for cornfields.
