A well-maintained and sparsely populated national park is found in the west at Bosque El Imposible. Additionally, there is Montecristo Cloud Forest, and a quaint fishing village with incredible local hospitality and remote coconut islands in La Isla de Méndez. Isla de Olomega in the department of San Miguel is an excellent eco-tourism destination, as are the beautiful Isla El Cajete in Sonsonate, Isla San Sebastian, Conchagua, Conchaguita, Isla Conejo, Isla Teopan, and Isla Meanguera.
One should also visit the colonial towns of Ataco, Apaneca, Juayua, Panchimalco, and Suchitoto as well as the Mayan sites of San Andrés, Joya de Cerén (The Pompeii of Central America and an UNESCO World Heritage Site), and Tazumal, whose main pyramid rises some 75 feet into the air. The on-site museum showcases artifacts from the Pipil culture (the builders of Tazumal), as well as paintings that illustrate life in pre-Hispanic El Salvador. Souvenir hunters will find some of the best artisans in San Juan el Espino and in La Palma (the artisan capital of El Salvador).
The capital, San Salvador, is a cosmopolitan city with good restaurants highlighting the country’s fresh seafood, as well as plenty of shopping, entertainment and nightlife.
San Miguel in the East offers tourists a more authentic way to see El Salvador by getting off the beaten track to see its countryside, coastline and lakes.
Surfing - El Salvador has a reputation for having some of the best surfing in the world. Tourists visiting other parts of Central America are increasingly drawn to the surfing meccas of La Libertad (near San Salvador), El Sunzal, El Zonte and El Cuco (near San Miguel ), transforming El Salvador into the fastest growing surf tourism hot-spot in Central America.

Our EPIC Road Trip through Eastern El Salvador
Join us as we embark on an epic road trip through the mesmerizing landscapes of eastern El Salvador. After leaving the capital city of San Salvador, our adventure begins at the picturesque Laguna El Jocotal, a serene lake in San Miguel surrounded by lush greenery. Next, we head to La Unión, where we make a quick stop at the beach Playa Las Tunas. Our journey then leads us to Espiritu de la Montaña, a campground nestled in the dormant volcano Volcán de Conchagua. Here we take in one of the most breathtaking sunrises I’ve ever witnessed. Our trip concludes with a boat tour in the Gulf of Fonseca, which is shared by El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua. While here, we stop at Isla Zacatillo, a secluded island paradise.

Similar to the actual capital, San Salvador, this city is decorated in Spanish architecture and set up in a Spanish style layout- with the city hall, cathedral and main buildings all clustered together in the center of town. Known also for its high temperatures, get ready for some serious heat if you're planning on spending some time here during your travels. For everything you need to know about visiting San Miguel and all other parts of the country, check out the DBH Guide: El Salvador, also available for your Kindle.

How to cross the El Salvador - Honduras Border
How dangerous is it to cross the border of El Salvador and Honduras by land, taking local buses. It is the only way to travel when you are on a budget and with both countries being labeled as the most dangerous countries in the world, I had to be careful on how to cross, especially as I had to information on which buses to take or which direction to go. I travelled from San Miguel in El Salvador and wanted to go to Tegucigalpa in Honduras. To follow the route that I took:
The day before, complete the forms you need for immigration at the Honduras border, the link for this is: I didn't print this off as I didn't have a printer, but the land border didn't ask for one. The border crossing that I followed was El Amatillo.
Start from the main bus terminal in San Miguel and ask for the bus that take you to/towards the border (La Frontier), buses go every 10/15 minutes. Cost US$ 2
When you arrive at the first stop in Santa Rosa, ask the bus driver as you get off for the bus to the border, he will point the way. For me, it was the bus in front. Cost US$ 1
Once at the border, just follow the road, stopping at the El Salvador Immigration then onward to the Honduras Immigration, where you will get a guard with your information on his computer screen from the form you have filled out.You will have to pay US$ 3 as a tourist tax.
Follow the road into Honduras, walk for about 5 minutes, there will be a petrol station on the left hand side of the road and the bus will be on the right hand ride of the road.
Once you get into Tegucigalpa, take a bus into the Centro and don't do what I did and take a local taxi as they will charge you 'tourist prices'.
I am an older backpacker travelling the world proving that backpacking is not just for the younger generation.
