East Croatia is easily forgotten by many, including tourists and locals. Join us on this trip where we explored the cities of Slavonia. We found many interesting places, such as Croatian Sahara, and magnificent cathedrals. The preserved fortress ruins in different cities brings us back in history. Going up the Vukovar Water Tower taught us a valuable lesson in Croatia's fight for independence and yet enjoy a marvellous view at the same time.
Other than the sights, we share our accommodation and some restaurants where we enjoyed the food.

U središnjem i najljepšem predjelu Slavonije, na 111 metara nadmorske visine, na đakovačkoj zaravni smješteno je Đakovo. Đakovo je najbolje obići pješice, a ponos grada vidljivi su tornjevi velebne katedrale koja zaštitnički natkriljuje grad. Gotovo da i nema putnika namjernika koji ne zna za katedralu sv.Petra i đakovačke lipicance, zaštitne znakove Đakova, prepoznatljivosti sačuvane pokoljenjima. Đakovo turistima nudi obilje povijesnih, kulturnih i prirodnih vrijednosti, u tolikoj mjeri da ih u jednom danu mogu samo razgledati, a ako ih žele bolje upoznati, moraju u gradu ostati duže. Unutar stare jezgre grada nalaze se brojni sakralni objekti koji se stapaju u prostor i čine sa brojnim drugim kulturno povijesnim spomenicima ovaj grad prepoznatljivim i jedinstvenim. Središnja gradska ulica Ivana Pavla II ili popularni Korzo proteže se od katedrale sv.Petra do crkve Svih Svetih. Uža gradska jezgra Đakova je i danas sačuvala svoje obrise koji su oblikovani u 18.i 19. stoljeću, u secesijskom stilu. Ta činjenica Đakovu daje poseban šarm i ostavlja pozitivan utisak na svakoga tko navrati u grad, posebice za lijepoga vremena kada glavna gradska ulica postane šetalište i mjesto druženja, gdje brojni kafići i slastičarne sa svojim terasama pozivaju na svakodnevni kraći ili duži predah uz kavu ili neko piće.
Đakovo is located in the central and most beautiful part of Slavonia, at 111 metres above sea level. The best way to go sightseeing and experience Đakovo is on foot. The town’s pride, the Cathedral’s towers which rise above the town like its guardians, are visible from far away. Almost all of the Town’s visitors know of the St. Peter’s Cathedral and the Lipizzan horses, the trademarks of Đakovo, which have been preserved for generations. Đakovo offers an abundance of historical, cultural and natural sites, which can be seen in a day, but to really experience them, one needs to stay longer. Numerous religious buildings and cultural-historic monuments are located in the historical centre of Đakovo, which make the town recognizable and unique. The main street, Ulica pape Ivana Pavla II (Pope John Paul II Street), commonly known as Korzo, stretches from the St. Peter’s Cathedral to the Church of All Saints. The town’s core has kept its Art Noveau features which developed in the 18th and 19th century. This gives Đakovo its allure and shapes the visitors’ experience, especially during nice weather when the main street becomes a promenade and a place for socializing, and the numerous cafes and patisseries located there invite to a break.

In einem Tag kann man die Stadt kaum besichtigen, geschweige denn kennenlernen. Im alten Stadtkern befinden sich viele sakrale Objekte und historische und kulturelle Denkmäler, die unsere Stadt so einzigartig und besonders machen. Die zentrale Straße ist die Johaness-Paul-II.-Straße oder auch „Korzo“ genannt. Sie erstreckt sich von der Kathedrale des Heiligen Petrus bis zur Allerheiligenkirche. Im inneren Stadtkern sind die Einflüsse des 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts größenteils erhalten geblieben. Der Sezessionsstil dominiert. Deswegen hat Đakovo einen besonderen Charme und zieht jeden in seinen Bann. Besonders schön ist die Stadt bei gutem Wetter, wenn die Hauptstraße zum spazieren einlädt. Die vielen Cafés und Konditoreien locken Gäste auf eine kleine Pause ein.

The City of Vinkovci is located in the furthermost northeast of Croatia, between rivers Danube and Sava, situated along the river Bosut. The City and its environs are positioned at 78-125 metres above sea-level, covering the area of 102,805 hectares, of which 60,623 are arable lands, and 29,149 hectares are predominantly oak and ash forests, with mild continental climate.
It extends along the Bosut valley, the highway and the railway, which connect the Western Europe with the Far East, and the Middle Europe with the exit to the Adriatic sea. The City has significant and high-quality natural resources as well as developed infrastructure, and it is through this that one may notice that it is an economically and strategically important part of Croatia. All of this resulted in the traditional agricultural/cattle-raising production and developed forestry, the development of industry and trade, and lastly, a very rich traditional culture. The City of Vinkovci boasts much and diverse international cooperation. The beginning of the international cooperation dates from the period of the former Municipality of Vinkovci, before the War of Independence, when the relations with the Ohrid Municipality were established and maintained. The period of a more intensive development of international cooperation began during the War of Independence, when the City of Vinkovci was aided by many friends from abroad, through various humanitarian actions.
Following the end of the destructions of war and the War of Independence itself, the cooperation between the City of Vinkovci and the cities Camponogara in Italy and Kenzingen in Germany was formalized through the signing of a cooperation treaty. A very intensive and excellent cooperation with the City of Široki Brijeg in Bosnia and Herzegovina is maintained. Additionally, in recent years the international cooperation has been established with neighbours from Hungary, the Budapest district - Kobanaya.
Vinkovci is the oldest town in Europe, with the proof of it stored in the Vinkovci City Museum. The Sopot houses are a tourist attraction which you should definitely not miss.

The municipality of Nijemci with its eight villages, Lipovac, Apševci, Podgrađe, Nijemci, Đeletovci, Banovci, Vinkovački Banovci and Donje Novo Selo is located in the so-called the Syrmian triangle that intersects the rich forests and rivers Bosut and Spačva along and across.
The post-war years also had consequences for the number of inhabitants in the municipality. Thus, according to the last census, in 2011 there were a total of 4,705 inhabitants in the municipality of Nijemci. There are primary schools from 1st to 8th grade in the settlements of Nijemci and Lipovac. Banovci, Đeletovci, Donje Novo Selo, Podgrađe and Apševci have regional schools.
In the area of the Municipality, work is being done on the construction and renovation of infrastructure.
In recent years, the municipality of Nijemci has turned to continental tourism, expanding and enriching its tourist offer through various projects. The biological diversity of Vukovar-Srijem County and the continental part of Croatia has a lot to offer to its visitors. In addition to river tourism, the area of the municipality is turning to equestrian tourism, which plans to diversify its offer. The process of turning tourism into the main economic branch of the Municipality of Nijemci is a long and long way, but they are quietly building their new future and developing step by step.
The area of the Municipality is characterized by the largest part of agricultural and forest area, and the largest part of the population is engaged in agricultural activities.
The Birdwatching Center Nijemci is located in several locations that you must visit in Nijemci even if you are not a fan of this hobby.
Experienced bird watchers say that more species of birds can be seen in one hour in Nijemci than in other places in a few days. GAK, yellow, gray and white heron, black and white stork, bald eagle, spoonbill, black hawk, waterfowl, bream…, are just some of the birds in the Syrmian plain.
If you love nature, visit the Arboretum on the Bosut coast in the center of Nijemci and discover what a traditional Syrmian garden looks like. Gazebos, benches, a well, pergolas – the right place to relax, enjoy, socialize and watch birds, but also a good start to your tourist route in Nijemci. You can reach the Sopotac excursion site, the second point of the Birdwatching Center Nijemci, by land and water. If you are an active type, you will enjoy a walk or a bike ride, and if you want to sail a peaceful Bosut, the choice will fall on a boat or a boat St. Catherine.

Nijemci, Hrvatska | Biciklizam i Plovidba Kajacima
Općina i istoimeno selo Nijemci smješteni su na jugoistoku Vukovarsko-srijemske županije, koji se tradicionalno naziva Srijem. Općina se nalazi u povijesnim regijama Sarmije. Naselja u općini su: Apševci, Banovci, Donje Novo Selo, Đeletovci, Lipovac, Nijemci Podgrađe, i Vinkovački Banovci. Ukupna površina općine iznosi 224,68 km2. Kroz općinu protiču rijeke Spačva i Bosut. Selo Nijemci povezano je s ostatkom zemlje cestom D57, dok su drugi važni tranzitni pravci u općini autocesta A3, željeznica M104 i državna cesta D46. Područje općine je potpuno ravno, vrlo plodno crno tlo. U Nijemcima je kao središtu satnije 1766. osnovana osnovna škola. Crkva Svete Katarine, obnovljena i barokizirana tijekom prve polovice 18. stoljeća, stalno je služila kao njemačka župna crkva.
Bogatstvo rijeka, šuma i polja u općini Nijemci stvara velike mogućnosti za razvoj ruralnog turizma, lovnog i ribolovnog, kao i avanturističkog turizma. Brod Sveta Katarina na rijeci Bosutu i Spačvi stvara mogućnosti riječnog avanturizma, promatranja ptica i životinja kao i biljnih vrsta, a ujedno se može kombinirati sa konjičkim stazama i šetnicama sa osmatračnicom koje se nalaze u Spačvanskom bazenu. Značajnije manifestacije su: Iločka berba grožđa, Divan je kićeni Srijem, koji okuplja Hrvate s jedne i druge strane Srijema, pa i šire, Festival voćnih rakija i likera, Miholjski dani i Srijemsko kolo. Manifestacije se održavaju od proljeća do jeseni.

U središnjem i najljepšem predjelu Slavonije, na 111 metara nadmorske visine, na đakovačkoj zaravni smješteno je Đakovo. Đakovo je najbolje obići pješice, a ponos grada vidljivi su tornjevi velebne katedrale koja zaštitnički natkriljuje grad. Gotovo da i nema putnika namjernika koji ne zna za katedralu sv.Petra i đakovačke lipicance, zaštitne znakove Đakova, prepoznatljivosti sačuvane pokoljenjima. Đakovo turistima nudi obilje povijesnih, kulturnih i prirodnih vrijednosti, u tolikoj mjeri da ih u jednom danu mogu samo razgledati, a ako ih žele bolje upoznati, moraju u gradu ostati duže. Unutar stare jezgre grada nalaze se brojni sakralni objekti koji se stapaju u prostor i čine sa brojnim drugim kulturno povijesnim spomenicima ovaj grad prepoznatljivim i jedinstvenim. Središnja gradska ulica Ivana Pavla II ili popularni Korzo proteže se od katedrale sv.Petra do crkve Svih Svetih. Uža gradska jezgra Đakova je i danas sačuvala svoje obrise koji su oblikovani u 18.i 19. stoljeću, u secesijskom stilu. Ta činjenica Đakovu daje poseban šarm i ostavlja pozitivan utisak na svakoga tko navrati u grad, posebice za lijepoga vremena kada glavna gradska ulica postane šetalište i mjesto druženja, gdje brojni kafići i slastičarne sa svojim terasama pozivaju na svakodnevni kraći ili duži predah uz kavu ili neko piće.
