On that last day, we drove by numerous Afghan villages along the Panj river, stopped by the Garam Chashma Hot Springs, and finally reached Khorog, the end of our Pamir trip. Ten days on the road passing by stunning landscape, meeting friendly Tajik people, and simply one of our most memorable experiences!

Wakhan Festival Explorer

Visit: for fantastic trips to amazing places.
Wakhan Explorer
July - August, 2011

We begin in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, from where we weave our way down the fabled Pamir Highway before crossing the border directly into the Wahkhan Corridor at Ishkashim. We then slowly work our way up the Wakhan Corridor, staying in homestays and meeting the local people along the way, before ultimately making it to Sarhad e Broghil - quite literally the end of the road. It is here that we will hope to be able to experience the Wakhan Festival.

After our hike to the Engles Peak Meadows (Day 8), we left Langar to drive to Ishkashim. We stopped on the way at the Vrang Stupa, Yamg Wakhani Museum, Yamchun Fortress, Bibi Fatima Hot Springs, and Khakha Fortress. The #Yamchun Fortress was by far the most impressive ruins, but all the other stops were incredible moments, perfect to better understand the life along the Wakhan Corridor.

Ishkashim Badakhshan 🇦🇫

From Khorog to Eshkashem (Wakhan Valley) - Tajikistan 4K Travel Channel

After a day's break in Khorog, we set off again. It goes on to the south. Our daily destination is Yamg in the Wakhan Valley. But first we drive from Khorog to Ishkashim. The valley of the Panj river is still very narrow and the water has a high flow velocity. About 30 km south of Khorog, the valley narrows and the foaming water roars through the bottleneck. Some huge boulders stand their ground in the middle of the spray. We let the spectacle affect us for a while before we drive on.
On our request, we go to the hot sources in a small valley. The water gushes out of the rock and has formed lovely deposits. We want to film the water basins, but it came to nothing. One has built a modern clinic for skin diseases next-door. A modern hotel construction is available for overnight stays. We also may go to the water basins - men and women separated. But everyone is naked here so that filming forbids himself. Somewhat disappointed, we continue our way.
After another 30 minutes, about halfway to Ishkashim, we reach a mountain called Ruby Mountain. Already Marco Polo described this mountain. In the 1950s, the Soviets once again attempted to mine rubies here, but it might not have been economic and mining came to an end.
We drive on for about an hour until the valley opens. The Panj river flows quietly to the valley. Small islands in the river form marvelous biotopes. As the valley finally opens the view on the first snow-covered peaks of the Hindu Kush, we make a short photo and film stop.
Electricity pylons usually run next to the road, but often the wires only hang down. We learn that most of these are telephone lines, but now everyone has a smartphone, so the fixed lines became obsolete. But nobody removes the scrap metal and the masts.
Shortly before Ishkashim, we get a lunch at a hotel. A goat, who seems to feel very comfortable in human company, entertains the guests and the children. The food tastes very good, but the sanitary facilities are not recommended.
A short time later we reach Ischkaschim, the door to the Wakhan Valley.

Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region, which is holding the pamir plateau. When you move here, you can see Afghanistan facing the very side along the river. Afghanistan across the river feels like a traveling companion. Afghanistan is really close, but only 5 minutes to cross the bridge. Afghanistan is a dangerous country in Korea, but unlike what we know, Afghanistan looks very peaceful here. I stopped by because there was a market on the border here. But there is a market that should be crowded for some reason. I do not think it's early because of the deadline. Are you still preparing to open? What are you doing? I do not have a market today and I want to go back home. This is a market that has been friendship with Afghan people every Saturday since 2004. Today, He said he did not come. I had to open the market today, which is Saturday every week, but I could not open it because people did not come from Afghanistan. Tajikistan and Afghanistan have the same language and religion, so after the opening of this market there has been a lot of exchanges and friendship. I do not know why, I do not know why, I just want nothing less and I have to wait another week. It is a heart.
