Wellsville Utah, Travel to the feel of small town USA

Nestled at the base of the Wellsville Mountain, a topographic curiosity because of its narrow base and unusual height, lies Wellsville - Cache County's oldest permanent settlement. It occupies the southwest corner of Cache Valley. On 15 September 1856, the families of Peter, John, and William H. Maughan, Zial Riggs, and Francis W. Gunnell, and two single men, George W. Bryan and O.D. Thompson, entered Cache Valley. There were twenty-five in the group, the oldest being forty-five and the youngest six weeks. They drove to a stream where they made their encampment; they called their settlement Maughan's Fort. Wagon boxes were taken off, and the women prepared homes in them. The men explored the valley and began to cut and stack the meadow hay for their livestock.13 November 1859 they changed the town's name from Maughan's Fort to Wellsville in honor of Daniel H. Wells, second counselor to President Brigham Young. Wellsville was surveyed in 1863 by James H. Martineau, who put into effect what was a Mormon community concept: four-square orientation with the points of the compass with the streets meeting at right angles. The land was divided into ten-acre blocks, each divided into eight lots of 1.25 acres.

Fort Buenaventura, located in west Ogden, Utah, United States, was the first permanent Anglo settlement in the Great Basin. It was founded in 1846 just east of the Weber River, west of current downtown Ogden, Utah. The fort and the surrounding land were bought by the Mormon settlers in 1847 and renamed Brownsville. Fort Buenaventura was the first permanent settlement by people of European descent in the Great Basin. It was established by the trapper Miles Goodyear in 1846 about a mile west-southwest of the present-day Ogden municipal building. The fort was located east of the Weber River, at a bend in the river. The purpose of the fort was to serve as a trading post for trappers and travelers.

In November 1847, Fort Buenaventura and the surrounding land claim were purchased by the Mormon settlers for $1,950 (equivalent to about $53,507 in 2019). The settlement was then renamed Brownsville, but was later changed to Ogden after Peter Skene Ogden who trapped in the Weber Valley.

The site of the original Fort Buenaventura is a park occupying 84 acres (340,000 m2). When made a park, it was originally a Utah State Park, but is now a Weber County park. The fort has been reconstructed as accurately as possible using archaeological evidence and written accounts. The reconstruction was done using construction in use at the time of its original construction, mortise and tenon joints.

State Parks in Utah Overview

Produced and edited by Utah.com Visit 43 State Parks all over the beautiful state of Utah.

We Visited All 29 Counties in Utah!! Here’s what we loved about our Utah road trip!

We’re still stuck in Utah waiting for our double decker bus to be finished so we decided to visit all 29 counties in Utah and find out what each county has to offer. As it turns out, Utah is an amazing place to visit and live!

This took us about 3 weeks and we are still going out and exploring even more in Utah each week. One of the best things about visiting each county in Utah is that we went off the beaten path and didn’t just visit the Mighty 5 National Parks in Utah.

Our tour of Utah was a ton of fun, but we’re still getting used to the cameras and filming so please forgive us for the less than perfect video. We promise we’ll do better next time.

Here’s a quick look at every county in Utah we visited, in order, and what we loved about each of them: (keep in mind, we visited each county in Utah during the summer months, visiting Utah in the winter provides a totally different experience).

TUBING THE WEBER RIVER, UTAH: IN ONE MINUTE

SUBSCRIBE HERE:

Long time no see! :)

Well guys and gals, I've lived in Salt Lake City, Utah for one month and LOVE it.

This weekend, my friend and I joined a Meetup group at the Weber River about an hour northeast of town for an afternoon float.

The Weber River follows a mountain road and has a lot more rapids compared to a traditional lazy river. Be prepared to dodge some rocks and tree branches at certain points, but I promise it's a lot of fun. :)

Tube Rental Company:
Location: Weber, Utah
Cost: $25 for a two-hour float
What To Wear: Strap on sandals, hat, sunglasses, bathing suit, long sleeve to keep the sun off, sunblock, GoPro, a beverage or two
What Not To Bring: Anything you don't want to lose (phone, wallet, etc.).. leave those in the car
