Charleston has the darkest past, but its modern status as a vibrant cultural hub is more intriguing. This waterfront city has all kinds of entertainment from water activities to land surfing. This antebellum town's historic landmarks, museums, secret gardens, and overgrown alleyways surprise the visitors. Here the temperature is a bit higher, but charming and beautiful people, streets, buildings, and mysterious gardens will not make you feel tired. Charleston is full of exciting activities, but first, let's give you an overview of this historical tourist-attracting city.
In 1670, honoring King Charles II, a city named Charles Town was built, but later, it was named Charleston. Within ten years, this city became the fifth most populated city in North America, having a population of 150,000. It is located in the middle of South Carolina's coasts where the Ashley River and the Cooper River meet to form the Atlantic Ocean. Travel and Leisure magazine has named this city the top-ranked US city in travel. You can visit it from March to May or September to November as the temperature remains mild in these months.
Charleston isn't famous just for its historic sites; the people of this city are more welcoming, kind-hearted, and most importantly, have a low crime rate.
So, let's take you to some of the best recreational points in Charleston.
First comes The Battery, a must-visit point, starting from Charleston Harbor and running along Charleston Peninsula. It is famous for southern-style mansions, historic antebellum homes, White Point Garden, and other historic points. From here, you'll get a spectacular view of Sullivan's Island, Historic Fort Sumpter, and Castle Pinckney. Be sure to visit White Point Garden, tucked away under grand oak trees offering an amazing ocean view.
Then comes Isle of Palms County Park, located just 16 miles east of the city. It's a 7 miles long shoreline that is a haven for water enthusiasts. It's famous for water sports, boating, kayaking, a golf course, and restaurants. Here, kids can do tubing while adults can go fishing, swimming, and sailing.
If you don't like the city's hustle and bustle, let's take you to Folly Beach, which is located 12 miles south of downtown Charleston. You can enjoy the charming Southern sunset, surf, or head to the pier to sit and fish. Its sand is pretty clean and safe for your kids.
To learn about the city's maritime history and get a better view of Charleston Harbor, consider going for a boat tour. You can rent a speedboat, kayaks, paddleboats, and cruise here. On a kayak tour, you can spot dolphins, feel the thrill of speed boat adventure, and board a sightseeing cruise to get a spectacular view of all the sights. And if you are with family, you can consider a luxurious dinner cruise to enjoy the best of this place.
If you want to know about this city more deeply, take a walking tour across this living museum. There are centuries-old mansions, cobblestone streets, and many other unique streets. On the walking tour, you must explore King Street for shopping opportunities. Also, be sure to visit Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon, Old Slave Mart Museum, Pink House, French Huguenot Church, and other antique buildings.
Also, be sure to visit America's oldest public garden, Magnolia Plantation and Garden which has been open for visitors for the last 150 years. This 400-year-old plantation sprawling over 464 acres includes a zoo and maze for kids, a café, and a theater where you can watch the interesting history of this garden.

Jacksonville's Best Beach is Huguenot Park
We took a video on the big rock pile so you can see the wide beach area. A totally prime time beach zone that has everything you could possibly want for watersports, body boarding, and is just perfect for fat tire beach bikes! It is very scenic and has surfing, restrooms, camping, and a boat ramp. Worth the drive out, which is pretty too.

Delaware: Wilmington and the Riverwalk
Wilmington is the largest and most populous city in the U.S. state of Delaware. The city was built on the site of Fort Christina, the first Swedish settlement in North America. It is at the confluence of the Christina River and Brandywine River, near where the Christina flows into the Delaware River. It is the county seat of New Castle County and one of the major cities in the Delaware Valley metropolitan area. Wilmington was named by Proprietor Thomas Penn after his friend Spencer Compton, Earl of Wilmington, who was prime minister in the reign of George II of Great Britain.
As of the 2017 United States Census estimate, the city's population is 72,846. It is the fifth least populous city in the U.S. to be the most populous in its state.
The area now known as Wilmington was settled by the Lenape (or Delaware Indian) band led by Sachem (Chief) Mattahorn just before Henry Hudson sailed up the Len-api Hanna,
The Dutch heard and spelled the river and the place as Minguannan. When settlers and traders from the Swedish South Company under Peter Minuit arrived in March 1638 on the Fogel Grip and Kalmar Nyckel, they purchased Maax-waas Unk from Chief Mattahorn and built Fort Christina at the mouth of the Maax-waas Hanna (which the Swedes renamed the Christina River after Queen Christina of Sweden). The area was also known as The Rocks, and is located near the foot of present-day Seventh Street. Fort Christina served as the headquarters for the colony of New Sweden which consisted of, for the most part, the lower Delaware River region (parts of present-day Delaware, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey), but few colonists settled there. Dr. Timothy Stidham was a prominent citizen and doctor in Wilmington. He was born in 1610, probably in Hammel, Denmark and raised in Gothenburg, Sweden. He arrived in New Sweden in 1654 and is recorded as the first physician in Delaware.
Beginning in 1664 British colonization began; after a series of wars between the Dutch and English, the area stabilized under British rule, with strong influences from the Quaker communities under the auspices of Proprietor William Penn.
Although during the American Revolutionary War only one small battle was fought in Delaware, British troops occupied Wilmington shortly after the nearby Battle of Brandywine on September 11, 1777. The British remained in the town until they vacated Philadelphia in 1778.
In 1800, Eleuthère Irénée du Pont, a French Huguenot, emigrated to the United States. Knowledgeable in the manufacture of gunpowder, by 1802 DuPont had begun making the explosive in a mill on the Brandywine River north of Brandywine Village and just outside the town of Wilmington. The DuPont company became a major supplier to the U.S. military. Located on the banks of the Brandywine River, the village was eventually annexed by Wilmington city.
The greatest growth in the city occurred during the Civil War. Delaware, though officially remaining a member of the Union, was a border state and divided in its support of both the Confederate and the Union causes. The war created enormous demand for goods and materials supplied by Wilmington including ships, railroad cars, gunpowder, shoes, and other war-related goods.
In the 1980s, job growth and office construction were spurred by the arrival of national banks and financial institutions in the wake of the 1981 Financial Center Development Act, which liberalized the laws governing banks operating within the state, and similar laws in 1986. Today, many national and international banks, including Bank of America, Capital One, Chase, and Barclays, have operations in the city, typically credit card operations.
