Chitradurga, situated in the North West of Bengaluru, is a district in Karnataka that holds great historical significance. It is located approximately 200 kilometers away from Bengaluru. The district comprises several taluks including Chitradurga, Molkalmur, Holalkere, Hiriyuru, Challakere, and Hosadurga. Chitradurga stands out with its intriguing myths and ancient human settlements dating back to the Stone Age. It is enriched with numerous sites of ancient, historical, cultural, and religious importance, making it a place that has witnessed civilization for thousands of years. Chitradurga is a unique blend of antiquity and modernization.During the 2nd century AD, Chitradurga was under the rule of the Shathavahanas, with Buddhism being practiced at that time. It later came under the dominion of the Kadambas of Banavasi. Over the years, it was ruled by various dynasties and kings such as the Chalukyas, the Pallavas, the Rastrakutas, the Cholas, the rulers of Vijayanagara, the chieftains (Paleyagaras) of the Kamagethi family, Hider Ali, Tippu Sultan, and the Wodeyars of Mysuru.
The reign of the Paleyagaras holds great significance in the history of Chitradurga. During their rule, the forts were fortified, temples and monasteries were improved, and the political status of Chitradurga flourished. Chitradurga became the capital of the Paleyagaras, with Medakerinayaka being one of the prominent and powerful rulers. Onake Obavva, a brave woman who fought against Hider Ali, is revered in Chitradurga's history.
Chitradurga is also a hub of folk literature, encompassing songs, verses, and epics that reflect the traditions, rituals, and beliefs of the tribal culture. The narratives of Gadri Palanayaka, the epics of Eththappa and Junjappa, are widely known. Nadoja Siriyajji, Thopamma, Bhovi Jayyamma, and Danamma are treasures of folklore. The district is culturally rich, showcasing various performing arts such as Kolata, Bhajane, Sobane, Devarapada, and Suggipada. It also embraces other folk forms like Urume, Thamate, Kahale, Khas.
Chitradurga, a city known for its forts and rich history, has been a hub of research and literary activities. Renowned figures such as Maggaluru Channabasavanna, Bheemamachandrakavi, Mahadevakavi, R. Narasimhacharya, Mortimer Wheeler, Dr. H. M. Krishna, Hulluru Srinivas Jois, M. S. Puttannayya, Lalasingi Somanna, B. L. Rice, Pro. Sreeshaila Aradhya, Pro. Lakshmana Telagavi, and Dr. B. Rajashekarappa have made significant contributions in the field of research. Writers like Madhava, Rangakavi, and Babburu Ranga have also emerged from Chitradurga, adding to the rich Kannada literature.
In addition to literary achievements, Chitradurga has also made a mark in the cultural field through various theatre activities. Sanehalli Shivasanchara Kalathanda, Taralabalu Shakha mouth's wing, Jamura suththata of SJM, Kumareswara Nataka Sangha, Rangasourabha Kalasangha, and Natyaranjini nruthya kala kendra have all contributed to the city's cultural identity with their diverse performing arts.
The city is home to the TaRaSu Rangamandira, a theatre dedicated to performing arts. Inaugurated on 11-11-2006 by the former Chief Minister of Karnataka, Sri. H. D. Kumarswamy, the theater has recently undergone renovations. It now boasts high-tech sound and light systems, a spacious stage, a green room, and a seating capacity of 534.

The unknown and Amazing Sri Chaturbhuja Rama Temple Hosadurga on a hill is about 76km from Bengaluru, 12km from Kodi Halli village. One needs to trek all the way to the top through the stone steps. Sri Rama Temple is present at the top of the hill. The view from the top is Amazing. The place is guarded by Monkeys who can be seen wandering here and then. The road to this place is good. Very calm, peaceful and blessed place. Ideal for photography. One will enjoy trekking to the top, as the place is covered by trees on either side. The Unknown and Riders Heaven Sri Uttare Siddeshwara Swami Gudi is about 191km from Bengaluru, 204km from Mysuru, located in Haladyamenahalli village. What a place, what a ride. There is no proper road to the top, thus making the ride to the top hardcore and fun. There is stone muddy trail all the way to the top of the hill which can be accessed by a 4X4 car or a powerfull bhp bike only. One can use the same trail to trek till the top. The view gets better and better as higher heights are reached. Watching side view and riding is a treat to the eyes. Once reached at top, the view of water flowing from Vani Vilasa Sagara Dam is pure heavenly experience. Cant express, one needs to experience it. Sri Siddeshwara Swami Gudi is present at the top. Ideal place for hardcore riding and photography. The Unknown and Little Heaven Shri Karadi Ranganatha Swami Betta is about 190km from Bengaluru, 192km from Mysuru, located in Krishnapura Village. There is muddy trail that leads to the below of the hill. From below one needs to trek through the rocky hill to reach the top. Shri Karadi Ranganatha Swami temple is present at the top. A Bear guards the temple throughout the year. Hence the Bear is believed to be the God form of Shri Ranganatha. The udhbhava murthy idol existence inside the cave temple was guided by Sri Rajeshawari Amma through a Devotee. Thus the cave temple was discovered by local villagers. The Cave temple can be visited only on Saturday from 10am till 2pm. The view from above is eye soothing.
