Homosassa Springs State Park Florida (Best Place to View Manatees) | RV Living
Homosassa Springs State Park in Florida, features wildlife viewing and a unique underwater structure. We didn't even know this place existed! This underwater observatory allows visitors to “walk underwater” beneath the spring and watch the various fish and manatees swim.⬇️⬇️ Click
When we did our kayak trip on the Weeki Wachee our guide told us about this little state park near the west coast.
The park also features a variety of captive animals such as alligators, black bears, red wolf, key deer, flamingoes, whooping cranes and the oldest hippopotamus in captivity.
The trails here are very accessible for anyone (including those with disabilities).
This is a must see so add it to you list of places to go see!

Ep. 84: Our exploration of the amazing state of Florida continues today with a stop at a state park - known for its incredible native wildlife and its famous resident, Lu the Hippo.
ELLIE SCHILLER HOMOSASSA SPRING WILDLIFE STATE PARK: Homosassa Springs has been a tourist attraction since the early 1900’s when people would arrive by train to the springs. Later, in the 1960s, animal exhibits were added. Several of the animals were film and television stars who resided at the springs when they weren’t performing.
The park is one of the best places in Florida to view manatees. An astounding number of fresh and saltwater fish, along with the manatees, congregate in the natural spring. There is also an underwater observatory, the Fish Bowl, which provides a unique view of manatees and fish beneath the surface of the water!
Homosassa is home to two manatees, Ariel and Betsy, that are unable to survive in the wild. Occasionally there are also other manatees that need temporary rehabilitation, who join the ladies in their protected paddock area. They are cared for and fed several varieties of lettuce by park rangers four times daily. This was a unique opportunity to see some of these amazing creatures really close up!
The park is also home to the hippopotamus Lu, famously known for his performances in many movies over the past 40 years. Lu is the only resident here that is a non-native. When the State took ownership of the land, locals petitioned for Lu to stay and the Governor declared him an honorary citizen. He is the oldest hippo in captivity!
All of the permanent native wildlife here at the park are here because they are unable to survive in the wild on their own. They serve as ambassadors so visitors can experience an up-close encounter and appreciation for conserving Florida’s amazing wildlife.

YULEE SUGAR MILL RUINS HISTORIC STATE PARK: This site was once part of a thriving 5,100-acre sugar, cotton, and citrus plantation with approximately one thousand enslaved African Americans. The ruins you see are what remain of a steam-driven mill that operated from 1851 to 1864 and served as a supplier of sugar products for Southern troops during the Civil War until it was largely destroyed. What remains is a reminder of our country’s complicated history with slavery and a country in turmoil during such a monumental war.

Manatees, Monkeys & Kayaks - Oh My! - Homosassa River
In this video we take a trip down the Homosassa River in our inflatable kayak. We launched from River Adventure into the Halls River and paddled our way down the Homosassa River towards Homosassa Springs. Much to our pleasure, a bunch of Manatees were hanging around the spring! Knowing that Citrus County is the only place in the United States where you are legally allowed to swim passively near the Manatees is permitted, Michael got in the water and swam above them. When we were finished in the area, we headed to a cool little hangout named Monkey Island! Here, a small island exists that contains a handful of monkeys that live there. To our surprise, we were informed the island will be undergoing renovations in early 2022 and the island will not be accessible until the end of 2022. We suggest you get out and see it before the renovations begin. We enjoyed watching the little fellows climb and romp around their land. It was truly a sight!
