Taraka Dam at HD Kote Tourism also known as Tharaka Dam at Heggadadevankote Tourism part of Karnataka Dam Taraka Dam, is built across River Taraka, Near City of Heggadadevankote (H D Kote), Mysore District. It's in the Basin of river Cauvery. Taraka Dam was Completed in the year 1984 and in october 2006 one of the three crest gates of the dam had collapsed. Taraka and Nugu are the two small rivers in Heggadadevana kote taluk that join the River Kapila also known as Kabani river.
Taraka dam is 58 kms from Mysore,215 kms from Bangalore, 87kms from Wayanad, and 127 kms from Ooty .

The recent increase in the rains in the catchment areas of Kodagu region, increased the water flow into Kabini Dam. Around 70000 cusecs of water was released, causing the submersion of the narrow bridge connecting nearby villages. The Dam authorities have opened the road above the dam to maintain connectivity for villagers. The Water gushing out of the Kabini is more reddish in colour and more faster is the flow. The effect of the increased release of water from Kabini can be seen at Ballurkatte and further at Chunchanakatte.
The Kabini Dam is situated between villages Bichanahalli and Bidarahalli or Beechanahally near Sargur town in Heggadadevana kote taluk(H D Kote), Mysore district, Karnataka. Kabini dam is built on the River Kabini . The dam is 696 meters in length and was built in 1974. The catchment area of the dam is 2,141.90 kms. It caters to the needs of around 22 villages and 14 hamlets and is also a prominent source of drinking water to Bengaluru. The dam is spread over an area of 55 hectares covering forests, rivers, lakes and valleys. Kabini reservoir is at the Kerala and Karnataka border. The backwaters of the Kabini reservoir are very rich in wildlife.
The Kabani, also called Kabini or Kapila, is one of the major tributaries of the river Cauvery in southern India. It originates in the Wayanad District of Kerala state by the confluence of the Panamaram River and the Mananthavady River. It flows eastward to join the Kaveri River at Tirumakudalu Narasipura in Karnataka.
Taraka and Nugu are the two small rivers in Heggadadevana kote taluk that join the Kapila (Kabani river). kabini dam also provides water to the combined system of Sagaredoddakere and Upper Nugu Dams. Located across River Nugu near Sambegowdanahalli.

Nugu Dam is located in Beerwal village in H. D. Kote taluk of Mysore district in Karnataka. The dam is constructed across the river Nugu. The reservoir was built to serve the purpose of irrigation and hydroelectricity generation. The reservoir has a length of 637.65 meters and a height of 43.58 meters above its deepest foundation. The total catchment area of the reservoir is 30.8 Th ha. The full reservoir level (FRL) of the structure stands at 753.4656 meters.

The Taraka reservoir was in the news in October 2006 as one of the crest gates of the reservoirs breached leading to a major flooding of the villages downstream. This resulted in a major loss of animal life, agricultural produce and property though no human lives were lost.
The Taraka Lift Irrigation Project was envisaged with a view to alleviating the miseries of the farmers of this taluk. The project entails pumping water 6 km from the Kabini reservoir into the Taraka reservoir; it was completed in 1983. Cauvery Neeravari Nigam Limited is in charge of this project and claims that 80% of the project is complete. The lift irrigation project was expected to be completed by January 2007.

Actually 2 small villages, Chamahalli and Vyasaraja Pura. We set down on these villages unannounced, and were made to feel very welcome. I think the villagers were intrigued with us foreign white people taking such an interest in them.

According to Census 2011 information the location code or village code of Chamahalli village is 618965. Chamahalli village is located in Heggadadevankote Tehsil of Mysore district in Karnataka, India. It is situated 30km away from sub-district headquarter Heggadadevankote and 30km away from district headquarter Mysore. As per 2009 stats, Kanchamalli is the gram panchayat of Chamahalli village.
The total geographical area of village is 542.38 hectares. Chamahalli has a total population of 598 peoples. There are about 135 houses in Chamahalli village. Hd Kote is nearest town to Chamahalli which is approximately 30km away.
