बस्ती एक उत्तर प्रदेश का जिला है। यह जिला कुल 5 जिलों से घिरा हुआ है. बस्ती शहर समुद्र तल से लगभग 90-124 मीटर की औसत ऊंचाई पर स्थित है. इस जिले का भौगोलिक क्षेत्रफल 2688 वर्ग किलोमीटर है. बस्ती शहर घाघरा और आमी नदी के मध्य में स्थित है. प्राचीन काल में बस्ती मूलतः 'वैशिश्ठी' के नाम से जाना जाता था। वैशिश्ठी नाम वसिष्ठ ऋषि के नाम से बना हैं, जिनका ऋषि आश्रम यहां पर था। वर्तमान जिला बहुत पहले निर्जन और वन से ढका था लेकिन धीरे-धीरे क्षेत्र बसने योग्य बन गया था। वर्तमान नाम बस्ती राजा कल्हण द्वारा चयनित किया गया था, यह घटना जो शायद 16वीं सदी में हुई थी।
