Michelstadt had its first documentary mention in 741 from the Mayor of the Carloman Palace, Charlemagne’s uncle.
Michelstadt is one of the oldest settlements and its castle grew out of a Frankish baronial estate. As a royal estate, Prince Carloman donated the city in 741 to Saint Boniface’s pupil Burchard, the first Bishop of Würzburg.
In 815, Michelstadt was donated by Charlemagne’s son, Louis the Pious, to Einhard for recognition of his great merit as a confidant to Charlemagne.
In the 17th century, the first houses outside the town wall were built. In 1773, a new town gate was built, called the Neutor (“New Gate”). In the 19th century, the gate towers were all torn down one after the other.
In 1806, Michelstadt, along with the County of Erbach, passed to the Grand Duchy of Hesse.
Michelstadt's town hall was built in 1484 in the late Gothic style and later remodelled on the inside many times. The back (east) wall was originally part of the graveyard wall, upon which the ground floor's upper bressumer was laid.
The town church, completed in 1490, was built to replace a Carolingian stone church by Einhard. The nave's columns and the two aisles' walls were built in 1475. The quire dates from 1461; the antechoir's north wall is even older – Carolingian.
Until the 1970s, the church housed one of the most valuable libraries in Germany in its bell tower containing more than a thousand volumes belonging to Michelstadt-born Nicolaus Matz, who was priest in Speyer, and who bequeathed this collection to his hometown and its citizens in the late 14th century.
The former church on this spot was built over a brook that comes up here, called the Kiliansfloß, an early Celtic-Germanic worship site and later a Roman Mithraic worship site. The thus channelled Kiliansfloß fed not only the baptismal font, but also all the town's fountains. The Kiliansfloß, however, does not actually rise here, but rather far outside the town. It then disappears into the ground not far from the graveyard, springing up again in the middle of town.
Einhard's-Basilica is a Carolingian church built between 824 and 827 is one of the very few Carolingian buildings that has survived largely intact. The Basilica's crypt once housed Saints Peter and Marcellinus relics, which had been stolen from Rome on Einhard's instructions by his notary Ratleik. Ratleik’s nightmares and the remains' sweating blood, however, made Einhard rethink his decision. So, he transferred himself, his wife, the relics and his seat to Ober-Mulinheim which eventually became a pilgrimage site with a new, larger basilica.

Miltenberg is a town in Bavaria, Germany. It is the seat of the like-named district and has a population of over 9,000. The old town lies on the Main’s left bank on the left knee of the Mainviereck (Main Square) between the Spessart and Odenwald ranges. Since the Main riverbed in the Miltenberg area is relatively near the foot of the Odenwald, only a narrow strip of usable land is left, little over 150 meters in width,[2]:79 which in past centuries was time and again flooded by the Main. The historic centre, which stands on this land, often sustained considerable damage in these floods. Only in the 21st century efficient flood control measures, most of all a wall, have significantly reduced the adverse effects of these floods. Some interesting sights are: the historic town centre with the Schnatterloch, the historic market square which served as a location for some scenes of the film The Spessart Inn (1958). Nearby are the Hotel Zum Riesen (one of Germany’s oldest inns, if not the oldest) and the old town hall. Miltenberg still has a total of around 150 half-timbered houses. Today our walk is in the village Grasellenbach in Germany. We will have a look at the old village and at some Hotels there. Our walk is in May 2021. All hotels and restaurants are closed because of the lockdown. So you only can see a few persons in the village. Normally you find much more life here, because the people like to stay for holidays in Grasellenbach. It is a windy day and for this reason sometimes you can hear a little bit noise of the wind, but I hope you will enjoy the walk. Come with me walking there.

This is a in-depth look at Miltenberg, Germany which was the fifth stop on the Viking Grand European River Cruise from Amsterdam. It shows passage through one of the 34 locks on the Main river.
Unlike the Rhine, of which it is a tributary, the Main is not a superhighway in terms of river traffic. It veers off to the left or right, doubles back on itself and seems to be in no rush to get to its mouth at the German city of Mainz. One of the ancient names for the river is Moine, which is said to mean crooked snake —a very apt description indeed.
The 13th- to 14th-century Miltenberg Castle dominates the town and the beautiful Renaissance Zum Riesen inn, hosting travelers since 1411, stands out for its rich history. The town prospered when it gained escort rights along the Main River; two forts once guarded the river crossing here.The Franconian town of Miltenberg on the Main River is lively and romantic, nestled amid one of Germany's fine wine-producing regions. As you stroll along the cobblestone streets of this medieval town, among timber-framed houses and down crooked lanes, it is easy to feel as though you have stepped back in time.
